Spring break l 40 hours l Red Card
Obtain training for national certification to fight wildland fires (a good summer job).
Learn to do prescribed burns for habitat and conservation management.
After successfully completing a week of classroom and hands-on training at the Illinois Fire Service Institute’s Champaign campus, you will meet the National Wildfire Coordination Group (NWCG) requirements to be certified/qualified as a basic wildland firefighter. What is a “Red Card”? It is a credential
issued by a home or hiring agency which has been recognized as part of a national qualification
system that is used by all federal and many state and private wildland fire organizations. All firefighters
assigned to a fire being managed by a federal jurisdiction must meet the Red Card qualifications.
