About the referencing/citing styles
1. QUT cite|write presents the 4 main styles used at QUT. It is not intended to be used as a
definitive guide but rather to provide an easy introduction to students in the basic principles
and practices of academic referencing and writing.
2. Each style represented in QUT cite|write precisely conforms to the authoritative standard
published by each governing group or organisation without variation, modification or
interpretation.
3. Thus, QUT cite|write provides students and staff with normative and authoritative rules to
apply. Any anomalistic course/unit requirements need clear and consistent communication to
those students concerned.
4. The use of "QUT" before each style name in the QUT cite|write resources is applied to make
an association to the University's expectations of the use of each of the styles as standard
and is not an indicator of a QUT "version" or variation of the original and standard style.
QUT APA. The style guide and examples are based on the standards developed and maintained by
the American Psychological Association (APA), and published in their Publication Manual of the
American Psychological Association 6th ed (2009).
QUT Harvard. The style guide and examples are based on the Chicago Manual of Style (CMoS),
16th Edition.
QUT Numbered (Vancouver). The style guide and examples are based on the numbered style
prescribed by the National Library of Medicine/NLM (as of 2011).
QUT Legal. The style guide and examples are based on the QUT's Written Assessment in the Law
School (WALS) which is the style to be used by all undergraduate students for all formal legal writing
in the School of Law. QUT Harvard is the standard style for all School of Justice students.
