Faculty of Social Sciences Department of Management Bar-Ilan University Leveraging In-Cycle Demand Information to Maximize Profit in a Single-Period Framework Research Colloquium Dina Smirnov, Ph.D. candidate, Technion December 2, 2014 Advisor: Prof. Yale T. Herer (Part of this work is joint with Prof. Retsef Levi (MIT) and Dr. Assaf Avrahami (Technion)) ABSTRACT 14:00-15:00 Two changes have affected supply chains in recent years. The first is the growing use of single-period inventory models, which is due to the increase in product variety along with shrinkage of product lifecycles. Current demand profiles often include short-term highly uncertain demand for fad Conference Room products or for a particular model, making single-period inventory models Building 605 advancements in more relevant than ever. The second change is the recent Information Technology, such as EDIBar-Ilan systems University and RFID tags, which provide decision makers in the supply chain with extensive, accurate, and often realtime, data. In particular, for single-period systems it has become possible to review the stock level more frequently than once in the sales period, and to utilize the in-cycle demand information, thus enabling a faster and more & Ph.D students exact reaction to demand Faculty, fluctuations, essentially creating multiple subperiods. In this talk we will be focusing on two types on single-period systems with an additional review. The first is a single-location system with an additional replenishment. The second is a one-warehouse two-retailer Dr. Tal Avinadav system with a two-phase delayed distribution. We find the optimal inventory and timing decisions [email protected] an analytical approach and an exact and tractable solution algorithm. Our model is applicable to a wide range of businesses such as bakeries, retail of seasonal products, perishable or technology-related goods, and the print industry. In addition to the theoretical model, we conducted a pilot field study based on real sales data obtained from a large magazine distributor, and implemented our proposed model. BIOGR APHY Dina Smirnov received her B.Sc. in Industrial Engineering and Management from Tel Aviv University, and her M.Sc. in Industrial Engineering cum laude in a joint B.Sc.-M.Sc. program from the same university. She is currently a Ph.D. candidate in Industrial Engineering at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology. Her research interests include supply chain management, production planning and control, risk pooling and multi-phase distributions. She is a recipient of a Best Paper Award (2nd place) from the Industrial Engineering and Management Conference Student Paper Competition, an award for outstanding achievements from Tel Aviv University and three awards for excellence in teaching assistance from the Technion.
