Information for Parents and Carers
Year 3
Autumn 2015
Our theme this term Stone Age to Iron Age
We hope that you will find the following information useful in supporting your child in his or her work at the school and at
home. With this information to hand you will be able to talk to your child more about what they are doing at school and ask
them questions about the topics you know they will be looking at. This information includes only the main themes, ideas and
topics which the children will experience.
Planning is based on the requirements of the National Curriculum, the local agreed syllabus for religious education and
specific non-statutory curriculum guidance.
English and Literacy
This term the children will be writing information, narrative and instruction text linked to the topic theme Stone
Age.
Throughout the term, the children will continue to participate in a weekly ‘Big Writing’ session, providing them
with the opportunity to improve their writing skills over a range of genres. Lessons will also continue to include
opportunities for drama and a variety of speaking and listening activities.
Guided Reading will be organised within each class.
Spellings will be tested every Friday and new ones sent out. Reading books will also continue to be sent home
every week. It is important that children read regularly at home (at least 15 minutes on a daily basis) and
update their reading record accordingly (date and pages read). Reading records will be checked every week
along with homework books.
Mathematics and Numeracy
The children will continue to develop their mathematical skills throughout the term, working at a level which is
appropriately challenging for their ability. In the Autumn term your children will learn to use Mental addition
and subtraction; Problem solving, reasoning and algebra; Number and place value; Mental multiplication and
division; Problem solving, Reasoning and algebra: Measurement; Geometry: properties of shapes; Mental
multiplication and division; Fractions, ratio and proportion.
Your child will have received their KIRFs (Key Instant Recall Facts) for this half term. It is important thy practise
these regularly at home for a weekly test on Friday morning. It is important that your child keeps their times
table skills sharp.
Science
The first science topic for this term is the Rocks and soils. The will be learning about the different rock
properties and identifying the differences between them. They will be how the different rock are created I
relation to the Earth. How erosion happens and what are the consequences of this happening are. The will also
investigate how soil is formed.
Information and Communication Technology
Our IPads will be used to research information for our topic. The children will also learn to use word and
PowerPoint to communicate ideas effectively. The children will be introduced to a program called scratch.
Religious Education
This term the RE Theme is Remembering this will provide an opportunity to explore remembrance in the
context of some major faith festivals; include Remembrance Day and festivals of remembrance. This includes an
understanding of harvest. It will also give the children an opportunity to understand the moral issues that relate
to themselves.
MFL
This term in French we will be covering Greetings and French culture, classroom instructions, animals and
Numbers and plurals
History
The children will study the history through the Topic Stone Age to Iron Age. Using timelines to understand how
long ago these events happened. This included learning about hunters and gatherers and how Stonehenge
came about.
Geography
This term, the children though the topic will have the opportunity to develop their geographical knowledge
through the topic they will learn about places such as Skara Brae where this is in the UK .They will also be
looking at the Lascaux Caves in France and locating them on a map.
Art and Design
This term, children will be able to identify some of the famous caves around the world that show cave art and
the types of images that were commonly seen. They will understand how they were made and the colours that
were used. Children will use a variety of techniques to recreate cave paintings and be able to discuss reflect and
evaluate their own work.
Design and Technology
Through the topic and MFL children will be designing and making Stone Age hand puppets. Designing jewellery
and making them through the use of clay.
Music
Within their music lessons children will be listening and appraising different styles of music and songs. They will
learn new musical terminology. We will be learning about pulse/rhythm and pitch. Also we will be looking at
musical notation and how we can compose a piece of music.
Physical Education
This term the children will be learning to develop practical skills in order to participate, compete and lead a
healthy lifestyle through our weekly dance sessions. The children will create longer sequences to perform for
an audience. They learn a wider range of actions and explore more difficult ways to perform.
In gymnastics as a whole, children use skills and abilities individually, in combination and in sequence, with the
aim of showing as much control and precision as possible.
