Why do so many students with mental health difficulties refuse to declare their mental health status when applying to university? Why do some of them not seek help from college support services or do so only when they feel desperate? Why do so many students with mental health problems bear their difficulties in silence? STUDENT PSYCHOLOGICAL SERVICES With the UCL Student Psychological Services Team, Dr Julian Lousada and Dr Peter Raven In addressing these questions we have taken into consideration the following points that students with mental health issues have repeatedly expressed to us over the years. Chair of the British Psychoanalytic Council. Recent publication, “Borderline Welfare: Feeling and the Fear of Feeling in Contemporary Welfare", Karnak 2005. Originally a social worker with a particular interest in group relations and organisational dynamics. Dr David Sturgeon Currently one of two psychiatrists at UCL’s Student Psychological Services. Previously he was Head of Psychiatric Liaison Services at University College Hospital; Lead Consultant Psychiatrist in South Camden; Visiting Psychiatrist at the Caversham Group Practice. Prior to this, an Academic Psychia- trist at University College Hospital Medical School, worked with the MRC Social Psychiatry Unit into lowering Expressed Emotion in families where one member had Schizophrenia. Dr Peter Raven Faculty Tutor (Medical Sciences), responsible for Year 4- Year 6 of UCL Medical School and for Medical Student Support and Fitness to Practise. Previously Clinical Lecturer in Affective Disorders, Institute of Psychiatry and Senior Lecturer at Royal Free Medical School. As a Clinical Academic, works as a Consultant Psychiatrist with a special interest in mood disorders and as a GMC Associate supervising doctors with mental health problems. Research interest in Student Support.
