What is a
Progression
Scheme?
• Two prominent models:
Credit accumulation
Progression
• Threshold level of attainment at one
level before progressing to the next
(higher) level
• Prevents backlog of outstanding
assessment and modules
• Improves tracking of student
performance
• Facilitates further automation of on-line
systems
What is a
Progression
Scheme?
• No impact on academic standards
required to pass a module and,
therefore, a course
• No impact on the regulations
governing maximum volume of
failure (ie: discontinuation)
• Tier 2 Process: Awards Board and
Faculty Student Review
Subcommittees
• Retrieval Packages for students
who cannot proceed
Comparison with
other HEIs
• Survey of HEIs: 20 responded
• 19 of the 20 have a Progression
Scheme including:
Derby
Durham
Glamorgan
Hertfordshire
Kingston
Leeds Trinity
Liverpool Hope
Open University

• 17 of the 19 use a 90 credit or higher
threshold for full-time progression
To Whom Does
Progression Apply
and When?

commenced their course in, or after,
September 2012

The Rules

5 with and level 3 modules
outstanding and; (ii) level 6 with

The Process
• SITS recommends a Progression
Decision
• Displayed on Student Review /
Awards Board academic profile
report
• Student Review function required to
confirm decisions or amend where
appropriate
• Student Review required to take
action for a REVIEW decision
• Cases where SITS is unable to make a
recommendation will be flagged by a
REVIEW decision
The Process
• Spreadsheets for completion by
Student Review function
• Awards Board to receive lists of
students under each category (with
profiles included for Confer Intended
Award, Cannot Proceed and
Discontinued decisions)
• For discontinued students, SITS
provisionally highlights students
eligible for entry to a Framework Award
The Retrieval
Package
• A Retrieval Package is agreed for
all students who receive a Cannot
Proceed decision
• Retrieval Package agrees
schedule for completing
outstanding (re)assessment,
retake/replacement modules
• Students remain registered for the
same course for the duration of
the Retrieval Package
The Retrieval
Package
• Some full-time students may need
to study for ‘reduced hours’
• In some cases, intermission for a
semester/trimester may be
necessary
• International student visas and UK
student funding arrangements allow
a maximum of one year for
retrieving failed modules
