Deliblato sands is one of the last and the largest oasis of
sands, steppes, forests and wetland vegetation of the
Pannonian Plain, one of the greatest centres of biodiversity
in Europe and the region of extraordinary, universal value
for nature protection and for science.
By the Decree Law of the Government of the Republic of
Serbia, Deliblato sands has been designated as a Special
Nature Reserve in 2002.
International status: IBA (1989), International Commission
for the Protection of the Danube River (2004), IPA (2005),
Labudovo okno – Ramsar site (2006).

Overall objective of the SNR “Deliblato sands” in NATREG project
Within the NATREG project integrated management plan for nature
reserve “Deliblato sands” will be prepared, as an example of good
practice and learning experience.
SNR “Deliblato sands” is a vast space shared by many stakeholders not
used to participatory planning methods. Therefore, it is expect that many
efforts and means will have to be engaged to elaborate a useful and
applicable integrated management plan.
Specific objectives of the SNR “Deliblato sands” in NATREG project
• Start intensive communication and cooperation between responsible
institutions;
• Agreement about common management principles and measures;
• Start to involve local communities and local inhabitants into the
management process;
• Promotion SNR “Deliblato sands”;
• Present good practices of cooperation and participation to the relevant
authorities and invite them to participate;
• Developing ideas for further investments projects for the protected area;
• Contribution to the mitigation of negative demographic trend.
Main NATREG actions and envisaged results
• Strengthening of cooperation, transfer knowledge and experience
between relevant institutions and authorities;
• Creation of conditions for promotional and educational activities related to
nature conservation and protected area;
• Awareness raising on importance of natural resources and biodiversity
with possibility of sustainable use;
• Encouraging of stakeholder involvement;
• Capacity building (material and human) related to nature conservation
and tourism on local level;
• Revitalization and rehabilitation of specific areas (grasslands, forests,
sand areas…).
