Spikezone Mini Volleyball Rules
Spikezone is a modified version of Volleyball designed especially for primary school students
aged between 8 and 13 years.
The modifications include:
A smaller sized court (badminton size court 13 m by 6.5 m)
A lower net height (2 m)
A softer and lighter ball
Four players on the court
Slight changes to the rules
Like Volleyball, Spikezone is about getting the ball over the net in three hits or less and winning
the rally because the ball hits the ground in the opposition's court, the opposition fails to
return the ball over the net in three hits or the opposition hits the ball out of court.
Teams (mixed gender) will be playing in Year 4/5 division and Year 6/7 division.
A team normally consists of four players but teams may play with three. If there are more
than 4 players, then a player is substituted at each rotation.
Coaches may instruct their players during the game and may call a 30 second time out during
each half.
Service must be underarm in Years 4/5 and players are allowed to move in front of the
baseline to serve if they are not strong enough to get the ball over the net from the end of
the court. The ball may be hit off the hand (no toss) for the service in this division.
Service in Years 6/7 may be overarm or underarm but must be served from behind the
baseline and cannot be served underarm by hitting the ball off the hand (must toss and hit).
After 3 successful serves by a single player, there is a forced rotation and therefore a new
server (this prevents a single player dominating a game on a serve).
On service, the ball may not touch the net and it is considered a fault regardless of whether
it goes over the net (this encourages players to serve the ball so it passes well above the top
of the net and improves the chance of the ball staying in play). However, the ball may touch
the net on other occasions.
Players may not touch the net.
Ball may legally be contacted by any body parts above the waist – kicking the ball is illegal
(for safety reasons).
The ball must be hit cleanly and may not be thrown, caught or scooped.
Players may not make two consecutive hits of the ball
Teams have three contacts to get the ball over the net. A block does not count as a contact.
No attacking shots above the height of the net are to be played on the return serve.
Games are 30 minutes in length with 15 minute halves.
The winning team will be determined by number of points won. There has to be at least a 2
point spread (i.e. 37-35)
At all times players are expected to be 'good sports' and 'play fair'. At the end of a game all
players should thank the opposition, the referee and their coach.
Each team must have adult supervision whilst on court and off court.
