code of conduct and behavior for trips/shabbatonim

CODE OF CONDUCT AND BEHAVIOR FOR TRIPS AND SHABBATONIM
The key element of conduct for any school trip/Shabbaton is ‫( דרך ארץ‬courtesy). It is important to understand that students’
behavior reflects not only upon themselves, but upon our families, teachers, Schechter Westchester, and the greater Jewish
community.
While all elements of “appropriate behavior” cannot be precisely defined, students must strictly observe the rules below. The
failure to observe these rules will result in disciplinary action. Should severe infractions occur, a student may be dismissed
from the trip or Shabbaton and transferred home at the student’s family’s expense, with no refund of any payments.
1. School rules apply to all school-sponsored trips.
2. The use or possession of tobacco, alcohol, and illegal drugs violates Jewish values, school rules, and the law, and is strictly
prohibited.
3. Males and females are not permitted in each other’s sleeping quarters, and should respect the needs of their roommates
(noise level, lights, music, property, etc.)
4. Students may not leave their sleeping quarters after curfew.
5. Students must treat all facilities (hotel/camp/synagogue property and equipment) with the utmost care and respect.
6. Kashrut standards must be observed at all times. This includes not only the food you eat but the waiting time between
meat and dairy foods.
7. Students are urged not to bring DVD players, game systems, laptops, or other similar devices. Schechter Westchester is
not responsible for theft, loss, or damage to students’ personal property.
8. On Shabbtonim: Students are expected to act in accordance with the Schechter Westchester community’s standards for
Shabbat observance, including no music, handling of money, or use of television or phones. Students are also
prohibited from using electricity in public spaces or in private spaces without the express permission of all roommates.
9. Students are asked to bring cell phones on trips but may not use them or have them in their possession on Shabbat.
During non-Shabbat time, they may only use them during free time, in cases of emergency, or with the express
permission of program staff. Any abuse of this privilege will result in the phone being confiscated for the duration of
the trip. Parents should direct any calls to program staff, and not directly to their child.
10. Students are expected to participate fully in all activities. Any unauthorized absence from programming is considered a
major infraction of the school’s expectations and will result in disciplinary action.
Student: I have read and understand the above code of conduct and accept responsibility for my actions.
