Spring Hill Lions Club has implemented the following guidelines to deal with
extreme heat at all youth ball games and practices. It is designed to provide
participants with a standard for safe play in situations of extreme heat.
The two values that SHLC will take into account when modifying or canceling
games/practices are air temperature and relative humidity. The combination
of these two elements reflects the heat index. We will rely on the heat index
reading that is updated hourly by the National Weather Service.
SHLC has defined five heat index zones. These zones are based on
recommended guidelines published by the American College of Sports
Medicine (ACSM) for participation in sports activities during periods of
extreme heat. Because the heat index does not take into account wind and
direct sunlight, two degrees will be added to the stated heat index on sunny
and still days. Likewise, two degrees will be subtracted on cloudy and windy
days.
WHITE ZONE heat index of 65-80 degrees. In this range, the participant is in
very little danger from heat and no special measures will be taken.
YELLOW ZONE heat index of 81-98 degrees. In this range, coaches will be
encouraged to take extra steps to protect their players by making sure they
keep them hydrated and by encouraging players to drink water frequently.
ORANGE ZONE heat index of 99-105 degrees. In this range, SHLC will
implement the following at games: all measures taken in the Yellow Zone;
water coolers will be available at each field complex for
players/parents/fans; catchers will be allowed to catch only two innings in
succession. If it is a practice day, coaches are instructed to keep players well
hydrated and to take frequent breaks.
RED ZONE heat index ranging of 106 to 115 degrees. In this range, the SHLC
will implement the following for games: cancellations. Cancellations are at
the Recreation Supervisor’s discretion as well.

Inclement Weather Policy
All individuals participating in or observing an outdoor youth ball event are
responsible for their own safety and should monitor threatening weather
conditions. Before each practice, warm-up time, or game, the home plate
umpire is appoint as the designated “weather watcher.” The individual will
make the call to stop play, remove individuals from the field, and announce a
warning to the spectators.
When the weather becomes dangerous, the designated weather watcher will
announce that players and spectators, should seek appropriate shelter. A
fully enclosed vehicle with the windows rolled up tends to be safer than being
outside so long as contact with metal surfaces inside and outside the vehicle
is avoided.
All individuals should have the right to leave an athletic site or activity,
without fear of repercussion or penalty, in order to seek a safer structure or
location if they feel they are in danger from impending lighting activity.
Safety is the number one consideration, the activity can be made up later.
If activity has been suspended due to lightning, the designated weather
watcher should wait up to 30 minutes after the last lightning flash or sound
of thunder prior to resuming activity. Each time additional lightning is
observed or thunder is heard, a 30-minute waiting period could be reset.
Play should not be resumed even after the 30 minute waiting period if any
signs of thunderstorm activity remain in the area or if the weather forecast
indicates the threat is not over.
NO LIGHTNING SAFETY GUIDELINES CAN GUARANTEE ABSOLUTE SAFETY. IT
IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF EVERY PERSON TO BE AWARE OF WEATHER
CONDITIONS AND TAKE APPROPRIATE ACTION TO BE SAFE. USE COMMON
SENSE AND GOOD JUDGEMENT. PLAN AHEAD AND MAKE SAFETY YOUR
NUMBER ONE PRIORITY.
