Sports Shorts 2017 Round 6, Crystal Brook at Wilmington Last Wilmington Game this week, and unfortunately another injury.... I am sure that all BMW members and families are with me when I say I hope that Tess makes a speedy recovery. I am also sure that both Megs and Tess have a lot of support around them, but no doubt the BMW family will be there to help out if it is ever needed. We are on the road again this weekend, I hope that everyone has pulled out their winter woollies because Winter is certainly upon us and I am sure that it will be a frosty morning in Broughton this weekend. Please be aware that Training nights are changing, if parents aren’t sure what is going on, please contact your coaches or watch our facebook page. A GRADE BMW 34 LOST CB 39 BEST: CHLOE CLARKE & LILY DURNFORD COACH’S REPORT: A few personal changes this week due to Ella's injury and Grace playing B grade so she could get to Adelaide, Big thanks Grace due to numbers this week in the senior grades this certainly helped. Lily did very well shooting accurately after the first quarter. The team took awhile to settle into the game which is something we need to work on given this is the third week in a row this has been a factor. Brydie and Chloe rebounded well however our poor use of the ball and decision making met we were unable to capitalize on the opportunities that presented. At half time we were 19-13 down. The third quarter sore some positional changes and a much more committed team effort with Lily the only player remaining in the same position, nice to know our team has lots of flexibility. Brydie positioned well after a switch to goals and Helene contested well in defence. We got within 1 goal in the third quarter. A disappointing result after having a convincing win last time however this just shows that no team in the A grade will be easy beats this season. If we want to take the next step in finals we need to eliminate the passing errors and play our game. Looking forward to a four quarter team game this week against Broughton. B Grade BMW 55 def CB 46 Best: Grace Hollitt & Emma Spaeth Coach’s Report: This week was another very physical game, but the girls put in the effort and came out on top. The start of the game was tight with Crystal Brook’s goalies shooting very accurately. Good pressure was applied the whole way down the court with the defence end then managing to get some turnovers and open the lead up. Tess had a nasty fall and has broken a bone in her ankle. We wish her a speedy recovery and we are going to miss her on the court! With Tess going off we had to make some changes, Emma changed ends to defence and lily came into goals and got off to a firing start. The physical competition started to wear us out in the last quarter causing some unforced errors and missed opportunities to capitalise on our turnovers; however we still came away with a good win. Big thanks to Grace who played for us this week and put in a great effort the whole game, and Brydie for chucking on her uniform as a bench back up after Tess’s injury. Another good effort by all the B grade girls. C Grade BMW 47 def CB 32 Best: Toni McCallum & Kate Trentelman Coach’s Report: No Report at time of release D Grade BMW 46 lost CB 48 Best: Emily Woolford & Kate George Coach’s Report: The D grade was short this week with three of our regulars out and enlisted the help of several players to make a team. We drew with Crystal Brook last time we met, so this game was definitely going to be a test. It was very pleasing to see the girls look more settled this week with less passing errors as well as better space and court balance. With three goalers out, Kate Taylor and Ash McCallum combined well in goals until the last quarter when Tammy Bastian graced the court again and showed us how it's done. Tamara and Kate controlled our mid court well this week and our defenders worked hard to control two experienced Crystal Brook goalies.Unfortunately, it was just one of those days where the ball didn't drop our way on a few occasions and the Brookies won by two. A great effort, considering our change of team yet again. Special thanks to Sophie Clarke who stepped up in defence with Emily and Minnie this week and did an awesome job playing out a second game. Massive thanks to Megs and the E grade for letting us borrow their players and to Bernadette for Primary caring Well done. E grade BMW 26 lost CB 38 Best: Tara Kumnick & Sophie Clarke Coach’s Report: After going down by 2 the first time we met this season, the girls were nervous but eager to give it another crack. With a short line up in D Grade, we lost one of our main Goalers Kate, but I was pleased to see a good combination with Yasmin and Courtney shaping up considering we hadn't had a chance to train in this combination. First quarter was tightly contested with us only down by 1 goal. We have a few unforced errors in the Second and Third Quarters which opened the gap to being down by ten. It was great to see the girls still fighting hard to not lose momentum with this tough team and I don't think the 12 goal loss is a real indication of what quality netball was being played. Well done to Liz and Sophie for their excellent work in defence, and to Tara who continues to play quality netball through the mid court, and really working on sending pick-offs back into court with some of them paying off for a score. We have a multitude of combinations available to us so I feel confident our best is yet to come. F Grade BMW 18 lost CB 35 Best: Margo Sismey & Louise Kohler Coach’s Report: We lost to Crystal Brook by the same margin as when we met them, 6 weeks ago. But they were a different side and had a couple of players from E grade fill in. A tough first half with excellent defence by Crystal Brook; and with Christy injured we had to make quite a few changes. This resulted in an even second half. We missed our mid courters Eileen and Janine, but had some fabulous helpers from the G Grade. Thanks to Tess for her run in the mid court during the first half and thanks to Jana for all the rebounds in the second half. A special mention to Samara who organised with her Boss to have a couple of hours off to come and play. We love her dedication to the team and club. Looking forward to meeting Broughton this week and see if we can turn around our narrow loss to them last time!! G Grade BMW 16 lost CB 33 Best: Isabella Arthur & Ashleigh McCallum Coach’s Report: No report at time of release H Grade BMW 19 lost CB 24 Best: Britt Thomas & Eliza Watkinson Coach’s Report: A tough battle in the H grade this week, height was certainly not on our side with the CB girls towering over us. That didn’t stop Britt Thomas who started us off well with an intercept from the CB centre pass. We fought closely with CB in the first quarter going down by 1. In the second and third quarter we had moments of competitiveness however CB went into the final quarter up 13-21. The girls set a challenge to keep CB to under 5 goals for the quarter and that they did (scoring only 3). We won the final quarter by 2 goals, with some excellent passages of play that even stumped the towering CB girls. With the first round complete the H grade are now sitting third on the ladder with 3 wins and 3 loses. A fantastic effort from the girls so far, I am looking forward to seeing their growth as a playing team. Incentive this week went to Eliza Watkinson, thanks also to the entertaining Margo Sismey for being primary carer. Tamara I Grade BMW 4 lost CB 29 Best: Livinia Lines & Kayla Linke Coach’s Report: In blustery conditions and with a few illnesses amongst the girls the game started off a bit unsettled. The girls moved well on the court and were able to score two goals in the first quarter. They tried hard the whole game and coped well with position changes. Thanks to Carly and Pippa for filling in for us, they both held their positions well! Incentive this week went to Sophie Orrock for stepping into GA and giving it her all. Grace J Grade BMW 9 lost CB 15 Best: Pippa Roberts & Carly Prosser Coach’s Report: I was pleased to see an improvement on meeting our first round opponents on Sat. The first time we met Crystal Brook it was 3/19 this time 9/15 . The girls played some lovely passages of play and are improving all the time. Our goal shooting from Pippa and Eliza is becoming more accurate each week with some dedicated practicing at home during the weeks. Our defence right down the court was impressive, with the girls finding their players and putting themselves in front position as soon as Crystal brook had possession of the ball. Our timing of leads is also improving; we certainly have some speedy players! Things to work on at training defensively are blocking leads coming into the ring and getting into position under the ring ready for rebounds. Things to work on in attacking are leading into space, timing of leads and fine tuning of passes. Well done girls! Minis Our mini's played like super stars this week. It's so pleasing to see the improvement of the girls as last time we played Crystal Brook & we had a few newbies & wow how much they have improved. The girls were looking for space & looking further down the court, so the flow down the court was great to see. Despite only us only getting 2 goals our defence was extremely strong, in fact we keep Crystal Brook to only scoring 2 goals in the last quarter. I was very proud of all the girls on Saturday- well done & keep up the great work. Incentive award this week was to Bella Hall in GD for her continuous effort of many rebounds & stoppages. Thank you also to the Wilmington Primary school for the delicious goodies & gifts on Saturday. Sub Minis The players in Sub Minis continue to improve each week and it's really rewarding to see such improvements in not only skills but in confidence and understanding of how the game works. Everyone is starting to work harder to chase a ball, shadow their players and working hard on staying in allocated positions by trying to not go offside. The girls found Crystal Brook challenging but have certainly improved since last time they played them. The team were excited to see Jemma finally joining the team on the court this week! Awards went to Olivia Roocke for her excellent effort in chasing her player and working hard at reading the ball in defence and to Jemma Groves for her first game who took lots of intercepts in the last Quarter in GK! Pippa Roberts warming up for J Grade J Grade warming up on a very blustery day.
