Sport. The Role of Sport in our Life. Level – A2 Pre –Intermediate Oksana Faryna teacher-methodologist a teacher of English English specialized secondary school №3 Sokal, Lviv Region Objectives: to promote discussion on the given topic/situation; to develop pupils’ communicative skills using active vocabulary on the topic; to develop pupils’ skills in pair work and role play; to improve writing skills; to develop pupils’ logical thinking, creative abilities, imagination. Equipment: In Touch 2 SB; handouts with a poem for pupils; handouts with activities to practice writing skills. The procedure I. Warm up. 1.Reading a poem. T: I’d like to start a lesson from reading a poem. ( Teacher reads the poem, pupils listen) 2.Answer the questions. -What is the poem about? -What sports are mentioned in the poem? -Why do children play sport every day? T: Let’s make a conclusion. The poem is about sports and why the children do such sport activities. So, this will be the subject of today’s lesson. In other words, the subject of the lesson is: Sport and its role in our life. II.The Main Part. T: Do you agree that sport plays a great role in our life? Why is it important? To answer this question, we are going to do the following activity.(T. explains) 1.Give a character sketch of sport. Write a word combination ( phrase), which characterizes sport and then answer the question why it’s important. ( Pupils come to the board and write the necessary phrases.) Sample sketch: keeps us fit makes us healthy keeps us slim Sport gives energy gives pleasure is interesting to watch 2. Answer the questions. a) Where can people play sport? b) How often is it useful to play sport? c) If people are good at sport, where they can show their skills? d) Are sport competitions organized in all countries of the world? e) Are sport competitions organized in Ukraine? f)What competitions are held every 4 years? g) Where did the last Olympic Games take place? h) What’s your favourite kind of sport? Why? i) Do people in Sokal have opportunities to play sport? Provide some examples. 3. Pair work. T: I haven’t asked you about your PT lessons. Now we’ll have a chance to speak about them. So, we start pair work. P1 thinks that PT lessons are very interesting in our school. P2 thinks that the lessons are boring. 4. Press Conference. T: Are there any good sportsmen in your class (school)? Would you like to meet famous Ukrainian sportsmen? Today you have such an opportunity. The thing is, I have invited some well known sportsmen to our school. I think you’ll be lucky to ask them questions about their sport career and achievements. Let me introduce you our guests ………………. 5. Writing. 5.1.
