How can analyzing a piece of literature allow me to understand the world in which I live?
As of today, you are the assistant producer of the well-known record label: Capitol records. Your boss
has asked your team to put together a compilation album on the following topics: Love, Protest or Life.
He has chosen a list of songs and is asking each member to closely analyze each song in order to make
sure that the song portrays an appropriate theme and that it should really be on the chosen album.
In order to complete this task, you will need to:
 Choose a song from the list, you will each have a song from either Love, Protest or Life
o Only one student per song, we will pick names : first name gets first choice and so on
o You can submit a song of your choice to your teacher for approval
 Analyze the song using the TP-CASTT method studied in class:
o
o
Take notes using the strategies studied in class (annotate, post-its)
Organize your ideas using an organizational structure (4 squares)
 Find and explain the theme, which is the message transmitted throughout the song
 Find a minimum of two literary devices (personification, foreshadowing, flashback, metaphor,
simile, dialogue, suspense or stereotypes) and explain how and why they are used in the song
 Write a one paragraph response to literature explaining why the song should be included in the
compilation album. Make sure to include :
o an opening sentence
o a development (ideas, arguments and support)
 you will explain the theme and the literary devices used by the songwriter
 literary device #1
 literary device #2
 theme
 Do not forget to include song quotes to support your examples and to
justify them
o your support will be in the form of in-text citations (MLA format)
o a closing sentence
 why should this song be included in the album

Music is your best friend. It will never judge you. It will never leave you. It will
always be there for you. Music always helps, no matter what you’re going
through. So, if you flunk a big test, or you had a really bad breakup, or you just
miss someone so bad, it hurts, then listen to my playlist. A hundred songs to save
your life. And it should help.

Music can change the world because it can change people.
