Spring Newsletter 2017 - Lincoln County Schools

East Lincoln
Middle School:
At ELMS, our football
team is part of an East
Lincoln football family.
East Lincoln High School:
ELMS football prepares
players for East Lincoln
High School. Our
coaches meet regularly
with the high school
coaches. We use
similar drills and plays. Also, we prepare our
players to succeed in high school in ways other
than football. We teach teamwork, leadership,
responsibility, and discipline. Our players know
the importance of academics and athletics.

East Lincoln Optimist:
ELMS offers a unique opportunity to our players
designed to improve football skills through
experience. We do this by participating in the
Optimist program. Our younger ELMS players
compete on Saturdays in the Optimist league.
This gives these players more games to develop
their fundamentals. It is also a lot of fun! There
are no costs or extra days of practice during the
middle school season. We encourage 5th and 6th
graders to participate on our optimist team, too!
Their practice time is in the evenings after the
middle school players have left for the day.
Register at EL Optimist online:
www.eastlincolnoptimist.org. (Opens 4-15)

5 Reasons to Play ELMS Football
Creating a Safer Game
1. Safety is our priority: We teach
fundamental football skills designed to make
football a safer sport.
Our philosophy is that the benefits of youth
football far outweigh the risks.
2. Developing Relationships: Our football
community promotes the building of healthy
relationships.
3. Individual Development: Our goal is that
every player leaves our program a better
person than the day they arrived.
4. Character Building: There are daily
discussions or activities designed to improve
character.
5. It is Fun: Football should be fun and we try
to have as much fun as possible while
working hard to achieve our goals.
“There is no better classroom than the football
field.” – Allan Trimble

Our team is focused on preventing injuries from
happening. Although regulations state that
helmets must be certified and reconditioned every
two years, we do it every year at ELMS.
We practice keeping our heads out of the play.
This is accomplished through a technique, hawk
tackling, developed by Pete Carroll of the Seattle
Seahawks. Since adopting this technique, our
tackling improved and head injuries have been
minimal. (For more information, watch the
“Seahawks Tackling Teach Tape” video on
YouTube.)
Lastly, we use a return-to-play protocol to ensure
injured players only return to playing football
when their doctor, parents, and coaches are
satisfied.
