YES: GUPTA, LOKHANDWALLA, MITCHELL, NONGA, SAHOTA, SHERMAN, SMYTHE, TORRES, WATSON, WONDERS, XIONG. NO: THOMAS. An ASUCD Senate Resolution to affirm our solidarity with the Asian Pacific Islander communities at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) & the University of Southern California (USC) after the recent sexist incidents. WHEREAS, On February 5, 2014, UCLA & USC Asian American Studies Departments received letters containing racial slurs and racial epithets targeting students of color on campus; and, WHEREAS, In 2011, Alexandra Wallace’s viral video, “Asians in the Library,” illustrated the toxicity present at the UCLA campus; and, WHEREAS, the vandalization of the Asian Women R Bulletin continues to illustrate the hostile campus climate at UCLA; and, WHEREAS, On September 17, 2013, the Daily Californian released an issue with an offensive advertisement targeting the Asian community in its opinion section; and, WHEREAS, The ASUCD Senate passes SR#3 (Truong), which recognized Caroline Kieu-Linh Valverde, professor of Asian American Studies, had been unjustly denied tenure at UC Davis; and, WHEREAS, these incidents create an unsafe university that reinforces systemic racism and microaggressions toward Asian Pacific Islander students and other underrepresented communities; and, WHEREAS, the Asian Pacific Coalition at UCLA requested support from UC Davis’ Asian Pacific Senate Resolution #15 Page 2 Islander student organizations; and, WHEREAS, the Asian Pacific Coalition at UCLA has released a statement responding not only to the incident that occurred on February 5, 2014, but also to the multiple acts of racial prejudice and discrimination targeting the Asian Pacific Islander communities on the UCLA campus. THEREFORE LET IT BE RESOLVED THAT the Associated Students, University of California, Davis (ASUCD) is in solidarity with the Asian Pacific Islander community at UCLA, USC, and all college campuses to promote a safe learning environment; and, THEREFORE LET IT BE FURTHER RESOLVED THAT THE ASUCD supports the photo campaign launched by the Asian Pacific American Student Development (APASD) Office and the Asian Pacific Coalition at UCLA; and, THEREFORE LET IT BE FURTHER RESOLVED THAT THE ASUCD assigns representatives to work with concerned community members in their efforts to raise awareness of this issue and call for administrative accountability; and, THEREFORE LET IT BE FURTHER RESOLVED THAT THE ASUCD formally endorses the statement released by the Asian Pacific Coalition and directs it to the attention of the UC President Janet Napolitano; and, THEREFORE LET IT BE FURTHER RESOLVED THAT THE ASUCD encourages Chancellor Katehi to urge UCLA Chancellor Gene Block and UC President Janet Napolitano to respond to the incidents; and, THEREFORE LET IT BE FINALLY RESOLVED THAT copies of this resolution shall be sent to UC President Janet Napolitano; UC Davis Chancellor Linda P.B. Katehi; UCLA Chancellor Gene Block; UC Board of Regents; The Sacramento Bee; and The California Aggie; Office of the External Vice President UCSA; Office of the External Vice President ASUCI; Office of the External Vice President USAC (ASUCLA); Office of the External Vice President ASUCM; Office of the External Vice President ASUCR; Office of the External Vice President ASUCSB; Office of the External Vice President ASUCSD; Chair SUA (UC Santa Cruz); and Office of the External Vice President UCDGAS..
