Sports Shorts 2017
Round 2, Broughton Mundoora at Wilmingon
How exciting to be playing on the new courts at Wilmington. Well done to all involved in getting the
courts ready for our first home game.
With 6 wins and 3 losses we are on track for a great season.
A Grade BMW 45 def BM 44
Best: Brydie Sims (ANZAC Medal)
Coach’s Report: Ange
What a great effort by all 7 girls on the court. We jumped them in the first few minutes to lead by a
few goals early; Broughton Mundoora settled and used their agility down court to turn some balls to
lead by 1 at quarter time. Brydie and Caitlyn combined extremely well given they hadn't
played/trained together. They rebounded well on the few shorts Broughton missed after half time.
Phoebe at WD put pressure on down court her deflections contribution to turnovers. Caitlyn and
Phoebe backed up well and assisted in keeping possession in the transition down court. Grace and
Sophie worked together to drive forward ensuring balls were delivered to goalies from the ring. Ella
and Helane worked hard against a tough and tall defence showing patience and team work with the
girls on the circle as well as good vision between each other to work ball within shooting range. All
goalies on court shot accurately under great pressure from both teams defence. At the final break
we were 2 goals down but not out of it, a couple errors part way through allowed BM to lead by 4
however we persisted with great team defence and value the ball to gain the lead. The game went
goal for goal with us gaining the lead by 2 with couple minutes to go. An exciting game for the girls
and the spectators. Congratulations to Brydie Sims on taking out the Ruth Kitto Anzac Medal for
best on court. Thanks to Tess Mc and others on face book for keeping an anxious Chloe in
Melbourne up to date with the scores.
B Grade BMW 57 def BM 47
Coach’s Report: Emma & Katelan Spaeth
Fantastic effort put in by all girls on the court, getting off to a slow start but where quick to settle to
be in the lead at the end of the first quarter, continuing to build on that lead throughout to win by
10. The pressure all over the court forced errors which our goals managed to covert shooting well.
The mid court provided lots of drive and fed well to the goalies. Our defence where on their toes at
all times with great communication, picking off a few and rebounding well. Overall fantastic team
effort.
C Grade BMW 58 def BM 38
Best: Toni McCallum and Monique Carcuro
Coach’s Report: Toni
We welcomed Dora Blieschke for her first game back, and as a senior for BMW. This week’s score
was not a true indication of how close it felt. We had two 'power quarters'; 1st Q when we went up
by 8 goals and the 3rd Q when we went up by 7, and this really cemented our win. Dora, Phoebe,
Nic and Mon well done for keeping BM scores to 10, 11, 8 and 9 in respective quarters. And with a
focus on developing on court communication and working together in the circle we will only
continue to improve. I now look forward to seeing how we go against SF this weekend who are
without a 'B' grade so are sure to be strong; and seeing that they played us in the GF last year it will
be a fantastic game.
D Grade BMW 70 def BM 21
Best: Georgina Foreman and Ashlea McCallum
Coach’s Report: Nic
The D grade played against a much younger Broughton-Mundoora side this week. With 4 of our
current 10 player list out for the game, we had a bit of a mix-match team take the court. It was
lovely to take the court for a quarter with the girls I'll be coaching this year and a huge thanks again
to the wonderful girls who stepped up to play, Minnesota, Tara and Kate Taylor. Our defensive effort
was fabulous this week with many intercepts, tips, loose ball gets and rebounds. To keep a team to
22 goals is quite a feat in itself! The Broughton defense was no match to our attack this week with
good drives down the court and solid feeds to our goalies. Ash made a guest appearance in GA this
week with Georgina in GS and both complimented each other beautifully. Well done girls an amazing
70-21 win!
E grade BMW 52 def BM 21
Coach’s Report: Katrina for Meridee
The E grade girls put on an awesome game of netball to win by 31 goals. Our defensive end was
incredibly strong, their rebounds and intercepts a key ingredient of the win. Leading improved after
the first quarter and by the end of the game, transition from defense to attack was seamless. A great
game to watch and picking best players for this team would have been a tough job for the umpires.
Well done E graders!!!
F Grade BMW 30 lost BM 33
Coach’s Report: Katrina
The F grade had a much improved game from last week. Winning 3 quarters, but unfortunately a bad
2nd quarter had us 3 goals down at full time. Our passing was much better, from the previous week.
Thanks to Tess and Ashleigh who helped us get a team on the court!!
G Grade - Bye
H Grade BMW 25 def BM 4
Coach’s Report: Tamara
Our H grade girls worked extremely well as a team and were able to keep BM to only four goals for
the whole game. With lots of defensive pressure the ball came down the court often and we were
able to use these turnovers and score quickly. Thanks to Eliza Watkinson for being our third goalie
while we did rotations, a fantastic effort. Thanks also to Margo Sismey for being Primary Carer. The
incentive this week went to Lucy Giles for her effort in the goal ring, missing only two goals for the
entire game.
I Grade BMW 1 lost BM 36
Coach’s Report: Grace
I Grade was faced with another tall team this week against BM. The team are getting along well and
are trying really hard. This week they improved their ability to come forward to the ball. Their
defensive efforts, tips, chasing loose balls and intercepts are their strengths. We just need to work
on our attacking skills down the court when we get turnovers. It was a hard fought game, the girls
lost 1-36. The incentive this week went to Tayla Sismey for her defensive efforts!
J Grade BMW 2 lost BM 27
Best: Lacey Cains & Carly Prosser
Coach’s Report: Brooke for Donna
Another tough game again this week. It took the girls 3 quarters get into the groove and to score
their first goal. The girls are improving with each game, especially in their defense. It’s hard when
Broughton’s “C” player is twice the height as Carly. By the 2nd quarter they could get it down to the
goal ring but the ball wouldn’t go in. The girls decided at half time that all they wanted was a goal, so
by the end of the game they managed to score 2 goals. Thanks to Karen for being Primary Carer.
Thanks to Donna for allowing me to coach these lovely girls while away on holidays. Good luck to all
the J grade girls and looking forward to seeing their improvement through the season.
Minis - Nikki
We had a great game on Saturday, the girls worked really well together considering it was our first
game with nearly all our team this season. Despite the scoreless game the girls were awesome.
Jasmine Foulis was terrific in the stoppages at GD, you could not hold her down she was on fire.
Shayla Arthur was instrumental in C & made the position her own. Special welcome to Natasha
Blaschek with her first game at GS, I don't think it will take long for Tash to pick up the game as she
looked very comfortable on the court. We thank Ava Lee who was on our bench & ended up having
time on court time when Amy came off for a short time with an injury. I was most impressed with
Amy Searle as I gave her a few tips at 1/2 time at WD & she really dug in & followed instructions
really well. I was really proud of these girls & their beautiful manner, gorgeous smiles & you could
see the fun in their eyes. Thank you to Louise Searle for primary carer & Amber Lee for stepping in &
timing.
