Looking Ahead to 2014 & 2015 ‐ New EIASM Initiatives The EIASM EDEN Programme 25th Anniversary Symposium We are pleased to confirm that on Monday, 29 September 2014, we will celebrate the 25th Anniversary of EIASM's European Doctoral Education Network (EDEN) and its successful seminar programme. This event will be held jointly with the 2nd EIASM Forum on Research Quality, to which all EIASM Academic Council (AC) Members are kindly invited. The combined event will fruitfully bring together EDEN alumni and professors, as well as AC school representatives, mainly Deans and Research Deans. The conveners of the combined event will be Chris Chapman, Imperial College and EIASM Board member (as well as EDEN Professor), and Willem Buijink, Tilburg University and EIASM's recently‐appointed Academic Director. The theme of the event is "Doctoral Training in Management Research: The Next 25 Years". The programme will consist of 6 intensive, short yet profound lectures, using the well‐known TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) Talk format. This streamlined approach will allow ample time for discussion and interaction. The 6 lectures will be delivered by EDEN alumni and EDEN professors, past or present. All EIASM fields will be represented. The EIASM EDEN Programme 25th Anniversary Symposium and surrounding events will take place in Brussels, in or close to the Hotel Metropole (where EIASM has its offices). Regular updates will follow in the coming weeks and months, but we now invite you to 「save the dates」 and already block them off in your agendas. The EIASM EDEN Programme We would like to announce a new initiative with regard to the EIASM EDEN Programme itself, created in 1988. It is evident that the EDEN 5‐day Doctoral Seminars have been very valuable for European doctoral students in Management. However, a recent development in European education policy directly affects the EDEN Programme, that is, the Bologna European Higher Education Harmonisation Process. In practice, the Bologna Process attempts to harmonise the design of European Management Higher Education in doctorate granting universities to a 3 or 4 year BSc programme, a 1 or 2 year MSc programme, and a 3 or 4 year Doctorate (writing) Phase. Previously, in continental European countries, only an integrated MSc programme existed; there was no BSc phase. EDEN was designed pre‐Bologna. Hence its courses are implicitly Doctoral Phase level Seminars. Bologna now opens the possibility to EIASM of creating Master's level EDEN courses. Indeed, in a small but growing number of European schools, special research tracks in 'normal' MSc in Management (all areas) programmes have been created, and in a number of places, separate MRes in Management programmes. However, this has not happened yet in many of the Doctorate in Management granting Universities in Europe – thus leading EIASM to add Master's level EDEN courses to its EDEN Programme. We are therefore pleased to inform you that, in the future, the EIASM EDEN Programme will consist of the familiar EDEN Doctoral Seminars, complemented by new EDEN Masters Courses. In light of these additions, there will also be a need to create Research Master's level Theory, Methods, and Philosophy of Science (for Management Research) courses to support and complete the increased coverage of the EDEN Programme. Note that many of the existing Seminars can easily find a place in the new EIASM EDEN Programme structure. In addition, the format of the EDEN Doctoral Seminars and Masters Courses will be identical and stay the same: 5 full days of intensive and stimulating sessions. Demand for the EDEN Masters Courses will come from Schools that do not have a Research track or Research Master programme, and/or Schools that can use the EDEN Masters Courses to cover gaps in their Research track or programme. According to its tradition, EIASM will continue engaging top‐level Faculty for the organisation and delivery of the EDEN Programme, as well as aiming for an international mix of participants; these time‐honoured characteristics will remain underlying priorities when further developing the EDEN Programme; with respect to both the Doctoral Seminars and the Masters Courses. The 1st EIASM European Rookie Doctors in Management Job Market We are also proud to announce the very 1st EIASM European Rookie Doctors in Management Job Market. This will be an academic Job Market that will take place in Brussels during the weekend of 17‐18 January 2015 (with a pre‐event held on Friday evening 16 January). There will be tracks available for all the major areas of Management that the EIASM covers (broadly: Accounting, Finance, Management, Marketing and Operations Management). As part of our mission, we believe that EIASM has an important role to play in the academic management research job market in Europe. An ideal approach is to organise a Job Market (or Fair) where new Doctors in Management (aka Rookies) in all areas can meet in person European research‐active or Doctorate in Management granting Universities or Schools, to apply for jobs as Assistant Professors (APs). These APs (aka Lecturers) would usually start their terms in September of each year, that is, at the beginning of the academic year; therefore, it would be best to organise such a Rookie Job Market early in the calendar year. Teams from all interested Universities, for all management areas, would be able to meet face‐to‐face with potential APs. Following the job market, onsite visits and fly‐outs could then be arranged within the coming months by the appropriate parties, for the full presentation of job‐market papers, further interviews, etc. Newly‐hired APs could then start their jobs in September. Note that the Rookies will already be asked to give a brief presentation of their Job Market paper at the Brussels Job Market in January. EIASM will have a system available allowing candidates to upload their information and documents for eventual perusal by registered schools. To the best of our knowledge, such a Job Market for Rookie Doctors in Management currently does not exist in Europe. EIASM believes that an in‐person job market would be a very welcome and timely addition, providing an ideal forum and meeting place for young academics and prospective employers on an annual basis.
