It has been a pleasure watching our students thrive while engaged in unique courses such as Dance as a Fine Art, Digital Art, and Perspectives in the Arts. First semester was filled with many opportunities to learn in and through the arts. October brought renowned artist Arturo Ho back to Loiederman for a community mosaic project. Students, teachers, and parents helped create the Loiederman themed mosaic which is now installed at the corner of Weller and Dean Roads. This hands-on experience got the community involved in the creative process. Being a student at Loiederman means multiple opportunities to access professional artists. In November, students traveled to the Strathmore Mansion for a strings workshop with hip-hop violinist Chelsey Green and analyzed a rehearsal with Christian Kohlberg, director of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. Intersections program for sixth grade Perspectives classes, focusing on the novel A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle. The culmination of this “page to stage” eight week residency was a trip to the theatre to see Round House’s production of “A Wrinkle in Time”. Loiederman partner, Round House Theatre, returned with its popular Unique Arts Opportunities for 2nd Semester Second semester has proven to be just as exciting as first with new residencies and arts opportunities planned. The Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County generously granted us funding to bring artist in residence Susan Stockman to Loiederman. Ms.Stockman worked with visual art students on a mosaic project which will be displayed inside the main entrance In addition, we have received funding for a return residency with Leila Cabib, cartoonist, who will work with English language learners in social studies classes. (continued on page 3) The SmART Choice Page 2 Music Notes The Loiederman music department continues to impress with their beautiful sounds. Students performed at winter instrumental and vocal music concerts as well as the annual Winter Wonderland concert which featured eclectic, holiday inspired performances across all art forms. Strathmore Music Center brought Chelsey Green and the Green Project to the Loiederman stage for an assembly in March. The Green Project fuses the sounds of hip-hop with classical violin. We also look forward to visits by Christylez Bacon, progressive hip-hop artist, in May and June. Loiederman was well represented at the 2011 Montgomery County adjudication festival. Concert Band students received excellent scores including a superior rating in the site reading category. The Loiederman Chamber Choir has returned with superior ratings in all categories for a second consecutive year. They will now compete at the state level. Be sure to visit us for a spring music concert! Dance Fever Winter Wonderland Concert Loiederman dance classes provide students instruction in various forms such as ballet, tap, jazz, modern and hip-hop. Dancers have performed at the winter dance concert, Winter Wonderland, and even as special guests at Weller Road elementary school. Students and teachers are hard at work preparing for the upcoming spring concert. Come check us out! Advanced Dance Students So Much Drama Loiederman theatre students experience diverse exposure to the dramatic arts. This year’s fall play, “And a Child Shall Lead”, was a dramatic piece about children in a Nazi concentration camp. Fall Play, “And a Child Shall Lead” Thanks to our partners at Strathmore, technical crew members had the opportunity to participate in two workshops on stage lighting design and scenery with stage craft professional, Dr. James Utterback. The opportunities keep rolling as theatre students will be visited by the Young Playwrights Theatre in May for a play writing seminar. Loiederman’s spring production will be “Beauty and the Beast Jr.” under the direction of Constance Y. Lee. You will not want to miss this spectacular performance! Page 3 The SmART Choice Visual Art Paint, sculpt, draw, design- Loiederman students do it all! Visual artists recently completed a mosaic with artist in residence Sue Stockman.
