It is customary for the Pope to address a General Congregation but this was the first time he also happened to be a fellow Jesuit. His talk was not about the particular works of the Society of Jesus. Rather his focus was on the spiritual attitude that informs all the various labors we do. I want to draw attention to these over the next few weeks because they are also critical to who we are at College Church. Francis begins with “the service of joy and spiritual consolation.” This way of being is rooted in the spirituality of St. Ignatius who frequently invites us to pray for the joy that flows from God’s consolation. The Pope states, “Joy is constitutive of the Gospel message. You can’t pass on good news with a sad face. Joy is not just a decorative extra; it’s a clear indication of grace, it shows that love is active, at work, present.” He powerfully instructs his brother Jesuits that Christian joy is an essential, not optional, element of our faith. True consolation and joy comes from knowing who we are in relationship to the God who loves us. The Holy One who has liberated us to serve our sisters and brothers. Joy enables us to live our faith with perseverance, good cheer, and enthusiasm. Home Gatherings In 2012 when Fr. Dan White, S.J. came to the College Church he initiated “Home Gatherings.” The Home Gatherings were evenings where he could listen to parishioners about their feelings and concerns regarding the College Church in the comfort of a parishioners home. Now, five years later, he would like to do this again with updates on College Church 2020. We have several of these gatherings scheduled before Christmas and will be looking for host families for January and February. If you would like to attend one of the Home Gathering listed below, please contact Mary Beth Erickson to make a reservation by calling 314-977-7304. All Home Gatherings begin at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 29th at the home of Mary Beth Erickson (63125) Thursday, December 1st at the home of Teresa Jorgen (63122) Wednesday, December 14th at the home of Paul Handal and Mary Ann Moore (63132) SFX Connection Speaker Series November 20th—How 15 Years in Jail Transformed my Faith and Ministry Located in the Ballroom from 9:15-10:15 am Speaker: Dr. Fred Rottnek, M.D., MAHCM Professor and Director of Community Medicine, Saint Louis University School of Medicine Special Collection On November13th, there will be a special collection to benefit the Archdiocese of Military Services USA (AMS). AMS helps provide the full range of pastoral ministries to those who serve us so nobly in the Armed Forces. Please be generous. Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time November 13th, 2016 5 Upcoming Events Dec. 2 Xavier Days Celebration beginning with Evening Prayer at 5:45 pm Dec. 3 Xavier Days Reflection and Mass. Presenter: Fr. Roc O’Connor, S.J. in the Ballroom [email protected]. I ❤College Church because … My connection began in high school as we sometimes worshipped in the lower church late on Saturday evening. We were praying using some of the St. Louis Jesuit songs and our celebrations were wonderful! As a Sister of St. Joseph I also attended Advent concerts, watch liturgical dances and participated in Penance Services. I continue to worship at College Church because I love the choir and the music ministry as well as liturgies with very fine and thought provoking homilies. I’ve been a lector and am currently an extraordinary ministry of Holy Communion, a ministry I love. I receive my food for thought for the week from the homilists. Yes, I love my College Church! Sr. Rose Mary Brueggen, CSJ College Church Trivia In what year was the name (main or central part of the Church) completed? A. 1890 B. 1897 C. 1904 D. 1911 Did You Know The Letters of St. Francis “After 73 years of service, the great organ of the College Church was replaced in 1926 by one of the finest instruments in the country. The old organ was installed in the original Church of St. Francis Xavier on Ninth and Washington and later moved to the basement church on Lindell and Grand. It occupied the place in which the Saint Francis Regis altar now stands. The sanctuary organ was built in the large open space behind the main altar”. (Jesuit Archives) To the Jesuits in Rome On Sundays I brought all the villagers together, men and women, young and old, to recite the prayers in their own language. They were obviously pleased and very happy to come. Beginning with the confession of one God, three and one, they recited the Creed in a loud voice in their own language.
