During an alum get together at Padua, she reported much happiness and success with her major and her college choice. do you Teach? Irma Reinhold The editors of “Work of Art” prefer not to give specific details regarding classes conducted by members. However, once a year we will list our members who teach in the Summer Newsletter. If you are conducting classes please send me an email at [email protected] with your name, location and email address. Thank you. q As a high school art student at Padua, Chelsea received the regional multi-state award for Doodle 4 Google when she was a junior for her design that responded to the prompt “If I could do anything, I would…”. Anyone who knows Chelsea would quickly realize that her answer would be “a superhero”. In the Delaware Scholastic Art Competition, she received two Gold Key Awards for a comic that she created, and for her superhero interpretation of “The Creation of Adam”. Her Advanced Placement Art Portfolio focused on superhero variations of famous artworks. Chelsea’s portfolio also won recognition for her in the Regional Center for Women in the Arts’ Scholarship Competition. During Chelsea’s junior and senior years at Padua, she created portraits for orphaned children in Haiti and Rwanda for “The Memory Project”. She was also involved with Stage Crew for Salesianum School’s theater productions. Chelsea was also First Runner Up in the Hussian School of Art Poster Contest, where the theme was "Games We Play". q Getting ready for the Big Show! March 16, 17 and 18 The DFVA’s Spring Art Show at Goodstay is just a short time away! Artist’s show packages have been mailed out, which include: schedule, volunteer hours, room assignment, postcards, artwork tags and inventory form. Advertising space is reserved, ads have been created and press releases have been sent out. Banners have been made and will be up along Route 52 for the week of the show. Let’s all do our part in promoting the show by getting those postcards and emails out! Sarah Yoeman’s “Queen of the Night” We have decided the $5 entry fee will be a “pay once – visit all weekend” fee. This will be accomplished by printing this on the back of the show programs, which patrons can save and bring back to enter again, if they wish. I’m looking forward to having our DFVA Spring Show in this historic and elegant building! I also look forward to seeing all of the beautiful artwork our artists have been busy creating for this event. See you at the show! q Kathy Ruck, President and Spring Show Director Work of Art • Page 3 exhibiting artists: Save the date The 2012 Greenville Summer Art Show will be held on June 8, 9 and 10. We have over 100 members who are all committed to perserving the visual arts for Delaware high school art students and our surrounding communities. So, we are sure that our members want to keep this great organization running! Thus, it is time to have some members sign up for the necessary chairs to keep DFVA going strong! We can’t do it with only a few members putting in many hours of volunteer time... think about how can you help the DFVA regarding these four chaired positions. We know you have the talent, so share it with us! adVerTISInG ChaIr: Person to write and send out press releases for DFVA. Work with local newspapers and publications to reserve advertising space for our art show ads within the show budget. Work with a graphic designer on ad creation, and get specifications for ad size and file requiements. Send ads to the publications by the deadlines. Handle the printing of postcards, show programs and signage. SaleS ChaIr: A person with a background in retail, accounting or banking would be helpful (but not necessary). Order the credit card terminal for our Greenville and Spring shows. Be knowledgeable on the operation of the machine. Set up the sales desk at the beginning of the show, with machine, receipts and petty cash. Close out totals at end of day. Create spreadsheets of sales detail using Excel or comparable software for Treasurer to pay artists. Return credit machine. Get all checks and cash to treasurer. Keep records of sales for reports. ProGraM ChaIr: Find a presenter for each of our four DFVA member meetings per year. Be the contact person for the presenter. Meet them at the church to help them set up and clean up. Procure payment for presenter from the treasurer, and give presenter the check. Take photos at the meeting, and send in for our newsletter along with a few words about the meeting. hoSPITalITy ChaIr: At the four DFVA member meetings per year, arrive early to make sure tables and chairs are set up. On a table near the entrance place a sign-in sheet and name tags (blank for attendee to print his/her name). Greet people as they arrive. Set up a small snack or two and a couple of bottles of soft drinks, napkins and cups. Help clean up at end of meeting. Please contact Kathy Ruck at [email protected] if you are interested in any of these positions. If you are attending the first demo, we can refrigerate your food until dinner, or bring warm foods in an electric pot that we can plug in to keep warm. From Zack Bird: The acrylic demonstration is a two hour demonstration beginning with the invention of acrylic polymer in the 1940s and how it was ultimately developed into the line of paint we know today. On a large pallet we will compare the 3 viscosities of acrylic paint. Terms like pigment load, mass tone and undertone will be explained. I will demystify the coding and terms found on labels. As a group we will also experiment with the huge variety of acrylic mediums. After a Q&A session I will give away tube samples and medium to all in attendance. My oil paint and mediums demonstration begins with a brief but fascinating history of pigments, oil paints and early preparation methods. I’ll present photos and samples of raw materials like Lapis and Buckthorn, Dragons Blood and Mummy Brown. I bring sample boards that make clear to your students the differences between various whites and blacks, transparent vs opaque color etc. I'll describe the vernacular and coding used on labels and talk about toxicity and safety. I'll then squeeze out an "eye popping" quantity of oil paint and (with the help of some of your students) conduct an informative hands on demonstration of such things as paint opacity, color mixing, light fastness, and the implementation of various mediums and solvents. After a brief Q&A session I'll close by handing out free paint and oil mediums to all the attending members. noTe: Since Zack will be giving out free samples, it would be helpful to have an idea on how many will be attending. Please drop me an email (preferred) or call me to let me know if you will be at the acrylic or oil or both demos. Kathy Ruck: [email protected] or 610-274-8390. This includes the student artists who will take our place, the aspiring artists who accept the challenge to grow and advance, the seasoned artist who has experienced accomplishment and recognition and also artists who work in media other than paper or canvas. Our goals remain the same. Our Student connection was broadened by E. Jean Lanyon with the DFVA Mentoring Program. The Workshops continue to inspire and encourage growth and excellence and at our annual Spring Show a worthy member is honored. All of these programs were established within our first years and today they are as important as in the past. If you have questions regarding the how and why of any of our programs please ask your Board for enlightenment. This is your organization and you should be well informed on how and why the DFVA works. q Plein air event DFVA members interested in participating in the week-long plein air event in May in Sussex County, DE can find the application at www.pleinaircoastalde.org.
