2016 sees the National Theatre Connections Festival mark
its 21st year. To celebrate, they have selected 12 plays from
previous years and 500 youth theatres and school groups
to perform, involving more young people than ever in
making theatre.
The playwright Simon Armitage is Professor of Poetry
at the University of Sheffield and the University of Oxford.
The language of the play therefore will be a great challenge
for our Young People’s Theatre members and is an excellent
chance for us to tell this interesting and unusual tale.

The swinging sixties are so firmly associated with sexual
liberation that it’s easy to forget the generation of young,
single mothers who never had it so bad. Set in a dour
northern maternity home in 1964, we follow the fortunes
of 19 year-old Mary Adams, unmarried and seven months
pregnant. Forcibly sent to the home by a mother intent on
keeping up appearances, Mary has to cope with the dawning
realisation that she will have to give the baby up for adoption
whether she likes it or not. Only her record player and the
upbeat songs of the era keep her sane.
by Amanda Whittington
Be My Baby was first staged to unanimous acclaim and full
houses at the prestigious Soho Theatre in 1998 with Eleanor
Bron and Diana Quick.

It’s 1959 and Philippe, Gustave and Henri, three veterans
from the First World War, dream of making their escape
from the old soldiers’ home – well, at least as far as the
poplar trees on the hill. The gentle humour of this play arises
from the foibles of these men as they wait for inevitable
death, which they avoided in the trenches of their youth.
by Gérard Sibleyras, translated by Tom Stoppard
Sibleyras’s Le Vent des Peupliers premiered at Wyndham’s
Theatre, London, in 2005 as Heroes. This English-language
version by acclaimed playwright Tom Stoppard won the
Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Comedy. The
People’s Theatre is proud to give the play its premiere
on Tyneside.

24th – 28th
May 2016
Starts 7.30pm
Tickets £13.50
Cheated of their rightful inheritance, the Dashwood sisters and
their mother are forced from the comfort of their family home
to live in a humble Devon cottage. But the eminently sensible
Elinor and the impulsive Marianne are nonetheless determined
to find love, chasing their dreams to London and back again.
adapted by Jessica Swale
Jessica Swale’s charming, funny, and beautifully crafted
adaptation wrings every ounce of heartbreak, irony, and
romance from Jane Austen’s dearly-loved comedy of manners.
For Austen devotees, this will certainly delight and newcomers
to her work will be captivated.

Hilary once protested at Greenham Common. Nowadays,
her protests tend to focus on persuading her contemptuous
teenage daughter to fully clothe herself when she goes out.
A marriage in ruins and a career on the rocks only add to
the perils of life for a middle-aged mum in Walthamstow.
Where did it all go wrong?
This frank and very funny family drama questions parental
anxieties and explores the life, the worries, the strength, and
the vulnerability of the post-feminist urban woman. Jumpy
premiered at the Royal Court Theatre, London, in 2011 to
rave reviews and subsequently transferred to the West End.
We are proud to give this play its Tyneside premiere.

King Verence is to marry Magrat Garlick, a witch who’s finding
it rather awkward adapting to court life at Lancre Castle. But an
incursion of elves from a parallel universe prompts an outbreak
of mischief, involving trolls, morris dancers, and even the odd
passing orang-utan.
adapted by Irana Brown
We’re no strangers to Discworld and this funny and fast-moving
adaptation of (the much-missed) Sir Terry’s fourteenth novel
sees the welcome return of Granny Weatherwax and Nanny
Ogg to our stage. It promises to be lots of fun, so book early
