Star-crossed love - Territory Stories

Star-crossed love
WONDERLAND is to tackle the
touchy topic of same-sex marriage
and actress Jessica Tovey says
this week’s episode is thoughtprovoking but non-political.
The episode, titled Equal
Rights, also stars Hollywoodbased Aussie actress Gia Carrides
in a guest role on the Network
Ten series.
Carrides plays Dani’s (Tovey’s)
mum Helena, who left her husband 17 years ago to be with the
woman she loved.
Tovey’s character has to come
to grips with her mother getting
married to another woman.
She also has to decide whether
www.ntnews.com.au
or not she will attend the commitment ceremony.
‘‘It’s a really personal issue for
so many people and we do it in a
way which is very respectful for
people who this is really important for,’’ Tovey (pictured) said.
A supporter of same-sex marriage, Tovey said the debate about
same-sex marriage had serious
emotional overtones for those
caught in commitment limbo.
‘‘The writers have not made it
black and white, they have looked
at it from different angles,’’ she
said. ‘‘It’s not from a political
point of view, but it’s about two
people who are in love and what it
means to share that day with
their friends and family.’’
Tovey spoke with family and
friends, some of whom are in
same-sex relationships, about
how the debate over marriage
equality affects them personally.
As part of her research, Tovey
probed them about what it would
mean for them to be married.
Wonderland has been mildly
successful and a decision on
whether to renew it beyond the
first 22-episode season has yet to
be made. Tovey soon will make
her presence felt on the big
screen. She expects three films
she made last year — Tracks, Lemon Tree Passage and Adore — to
be released during summer.
