ST MATTHEW`S CATHOLIC PRIMARY SCHOOL

Saint Matthew’s
Key Stage 2 SAT
Information Booklet
2013
Key questions:
What does SAT stand for?
•
Statutory Assessment Tests.
•
These are taken at the end of Key Stage One (at age 7) and at the end of Key
Stage 2 (at age 11).
•
The subjects tested are English, Maths and Science.
•
The science assessment is no longer a statutory requirement, but at St
Matthew’s we still believe that it is important the children are assessed in this
way
What level should children be at?
•
Children are expected to achieve Level 4 by the end of Key Stage 2.
•
Some children will still be at Level 3 and some children will achieve Level 5 or
6.
•
A small percentage of children will not yet be working at Level 3.
When and where do the tests take place?
•
This year it is the week beginning 13th May. All tests take place in that week.
Children may not take them earlier or later.
•
A timetable is issued to schools to tell them when tests should be completed.
This is the same nationally. The time table is at the back of this booklet for
your reference.
•
Usually there is one test per day (with the exception of those pupils sitting the
level 6 papers) and it is a busy week for children and staff alike.
•
Tests will be completed in Class 6, Class 5, the D.T. room or the Head
Teachers office.

Some questions are worth one mark and therefore accuracy is important.
•
Other questions are worth two marks and even if the answer is wrong, a mark
may be given for correct working.

is allowed (and needed).

The Assessment of Science is covered by two tests:

Science test A
•
Science test B

How is the school helping to prepare the children?
•
Ensuring the children are focussing on the areas of the curriculum that may
be tested in the SATs.
•
By practising key skills and working on past test questions which will prepare
the children for the process of the tests.
•
By introducing the children to quality revision materials - revision books, I Am
Learning, BBC Bitesize etc…
•
By offering a SAT revision club on a Wednesday evening after school 3.30 –
4.30, where the children revise any individual areas they want to.
•
By giving the children the confidence to know that they can be successful and
achieve.
How can you help your child?
•
Support them with homework.
•
Make sure they get enough sleep.
•
Make sure they eat breakfast.
•
It is important they arrive at school on time with everything they need.
•
Ensure that your child knows they need to try their best, without adding
pressure to do well.
•
Please help them not to panic!
•
If you have any questions about the tests, please feel free to ask us.
