An average person in Hong Kong disposes of about 1.3 kilograms of waste a day. As a city, that’s over
9,000 tonnes- every day. Can we Use Less. And Waste Less? The Government has set a target to
reduce our waste drastically. This means building a sustainable waste management system and having
a rigorous strategy to meet that target. We need to reduce, reuse, and recycle. We will reduce, for
example, food waste. Whether as groups or as individuals, all of us will have to take action, and change
our behaviors in order to make a difference. We will strengthen recycling programmes, and work to
make this a habit for everyone. Our Community Green Stations are hubs for clean recycling and
environmental education. We will build more to have one in each of the 18 districts. We will advocate for
a shared responsibility, and establish treatment facilities to properly recycle precious resources. By
creating economic incentives, we have already reduced waste at its source. In the future, we will count
on everyone to help and participate in new waste charging programs. In addition, we will help the
recycling industry upgrade and expand their operations. Our goal is to minimize the use of landfills and
turn waste into a resource. Using advanced technologies, we can reduce the volume of waste and
generate energy! We can even convert food waste to biogas and compost. Did you know that a brandnew facility has been generating energy since April 2015? So when we Use Less and Waste Less, we
can actually do more. With your participation, we can build a more sustainable Hong Kong. It’s easy.
