Spiritual Thoughts
Meek and humble is an interesting combination. What kind of person is meek
and humble? Certainly not an army general. Emperors who conquer and rule
nations cannot be meek and humble. Olympic gold medalists do not win gold
medals because they are meek and humble. Wall Street guys would not survive a
day at work if they practiced meek and humble. What kind of person is meek
and humble? …Slaves.
I would have done things a bit more differently if I were the Master of
Ceremonies at the multiplication of the loaves event. I would have said to the
crowd, “May I have your attention? We are going to feed you. Because there are
so many of you, we will be asking you to form two lines. As you come up we
will ask you to pass two baskets. As you pass by the basket of bread and the
basket of fish, we ask that you take one. Once you have your food you can return
to your places. There is plenty of food. If you would like to have more, please
get back in line. Thank you for your co-operation.” That, however, is not what
Jesus did. He asked the crowd to recline on the grass. Why would He do that
when my way is so much more efficient for such a large crowd? Jesus wanted to
personally serve them. Notice He does not send His disciples. “After He broke
the bread and the fish He distributed them….” Imagine for a moment what that
would have been like. You are reclining on the grass and Jesus, Lord of Lords,
the King of the Universe, Savior of the World, Son of God, hands you a fish
sandwich and says, “Enjoy.” Do you think you will ever forget that moment? So
much more powerful than grabbing some bread from a basket. Maybe that is
why the crowd was so impressed that they wanted to make Him king. Humble
service can be very powerful. Maybe that is why we are called
to be servants.
When we began work to renovate the church, I noticed the altar was a large,
beautiful stone while the lectern was a stick with a board attached to the top. The
disproportion between the two was noticeable. I wanted the Word of God to
have more prominence. My brother the carpenter agreed to a price to build me a
lectern. Several months after, I commissioned my brother to make the lectern for
the church, which he delivered. I was in a state of shock at how beautiful he
made it: octagon, cantilevered with hand carvings. I told him that I did not have
the money to pay him for all the extra hours he put into it. (I also didn’t have the
money to pay him for such skilled work.) He told me, “I didn’t do it for the
money.” My brother, went beyond the blue print and shocked me.
When I was in business before I entered the seminary, I did very small jobs: fix
gutters, roof jobs, hang doors, replace windows, remodel rooms. Then a
gentleman asked me to build him a horse barn. It was exactly the kind of job I
wanted to do. When he asked me to come over to the job site to look at the
blueprints, I told him, “I am honored that you asked me to do this job but there is
a guy in town here who has more experience, better equipment, and who can get
the job done faster than I.” As I was telling him this, I imagined what my
workers will say to me back at the shop. “Why did you tell him that? Tell him
that you are a Grover, a part of a long history of skilled builders…that you have
competent helpers. Don’t encourage him to turn to the competition.” The owner
said to me, “I know that, but I want you to do the job. You are humble.” What
does humble have to do with building a barn? A humble person will provide
excellent service. A humble person is willing to learn from the experts. A
humble person will work extra hours and go beyond the blueprint. That is what I
did. Over each of the stalls I added holes and gadgets making it much easier to
feed the animals below. I built a storage room in a way that each tool had a place
to hang for easy access. In the end, the owner was very happy. It says in the
letter to the Ephesians to live a life worthy of your calling. Right after that it
reads “be meek and humble.” The call is to be good servants. Why servants? We
Christians have the power to give in a way that will inspire. Service can be very
powerful. If it worked that way for our Lord, it will work for us.

St. Clement Young Adult
Weekly Meeting
Gathering regularly for prayer, fellowship,
community service, and outreach to other young
adults in the Archdiocese of Boston, we come
from all over the area. Many of us are students and
young professionals. Our love for God and each
other is vibrant and contagious, and we are
constantly welcoming new members. At this one
hour meeting, we listen to the readings of the Mass
and discuss how to apply the message to our lives
today. Some of the insights are truly inspiring.
Come each week or once a month. There is no
commitment. For more information, or to be
added to the SCYA email list, please contact:
[email protected]
Please join Pure in Heart for our weekly
Thursday meeting in St. Clement's Upper Room.
There will be Mass followed by Rosary, Confession,
Adoration, a talk and discussion.
This topic this week will be:
Culture & Blessed John Paul II
Something truly powerful and beautiful happens when
faith and culture grow to be so intimately connected that
they become inseparable. Looking back in history, there
are many cases in which we can witness this, one being in
the Polish culture. John Paul II was one of the most
extraordinary and influential leaders in history, but how
can we even begin to understand this great man and what
drove him to have such a profound conviction in his faith?
Why did this Son of Poland believe so strongly in the
power of culture, even using it to combat the darkness of
Communism in Poland and in the world? What is it about
his roots and patriotism that infused his spiritual identity
and all that he stood for? To approach the answer to these
questions, we must look at the relationship between the
Catholic faith and the Polish culture. As young adults, we
can learn a lot about our own spiritual identities from this
example and think about how we can influence society in
the unique approach that John Paul II took. Furthermore,
we can realize that, regardless of what background we
have, we are all a part of a universal Catholic family that
is one in our Mother church and that encourages us on our
paths to holiness.
THE ELIMINATION OF THE TEMP
PARKING PERMITS
Due to the increase of visitors to the Shrine and the expressed concern about the availability of parking spaces,
St. Clement's is currently issuing new permits.
Please call 617.266.5999 Ext. 130 and ask a staff member to help you register for the new parking permits.
We are issuing these new parking permits to make the Shrine more accessible for those who are in the shrine,
attending a church program or visiting with a staff member. We are grateful that we are able to extend this
privilege of Church Parking from the corner of Ispwich St. extending along the property line (between the
“Church Parking” signs).
Wednesday Aug. 14 & Thursday Aug 15,
the Sisters from St. Paul Books & Media
will be visiting St Clements to highlight
their new Sunday and Daily Missals.

Our very own Fr. Tim Gallagher, OMV had his own TV series on EWTN.
“Living the Discerning Life” is now available on DVD
In this set of ten conferences, shown on EWTN, Fr. Gallagher explains St. Ignatius of Loyola's
fourteen rules for the discernment of spirits. These clear and practical rules offer assistance in
understanding the times of joy and of struggle in the spiritual life. Above all, St. Ignatius
provides spiritual tools for overcoming the pitfalls of discouragement and darkness (spiritual
desolation).
Now available at St Francis Chapel’s bookstore at the Prudential Center.

Adult Sacraments
Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults -RICA Program- 2012
The RCIA is a process through which non-baptized men and women enter the Catholic Church. It includes several stages marked by
study, prayer and rites at Mass. Participants in the RCIA are known
as catechumens. They undergo a process of conversion as they
study the Gospel, profess faith in Jesus and the Catholic Church,
and receive the sacraments of baptism, confirmation and Holy Eucharist. The RCIA process follows the ancient practice of the
Church and was restored by the Second Vatican Council as the
normal way adults prepare for baptism.
