Emergency Room Intern
Mid-Hudson Regional Hospital of
Westchester Medical Center,
Poughkeepsie, NY
I chose to intern in an emergency room because I am interested
in working in the health field. I knew this internship would give
me a glimpse of what it would be like to work in the field on a
full-time basis. In addition, I knew it would give me the chance to
meet people who could give me advice about graduate school
and careers.
On a day-to-day basis I shadowed doctors, physician assistants and nurse practitioners. I also learned the basics of
important diagnostic measures and procedures. For example,
I was taught how to administer local anesthesia, stitch wounds,
interpret x-rays and CT scans, and both test for and diagnose
illnesses.
I would usually shadow a different person each day. All of
them were extremely knowledgeable, friendly, and eager to
teach me the ins and outs of working in an emergency room. I
was also able to network with physician assistants and medical
school students who gave me valuable insights about what
graduate school is like, including tips on applying and makng
my application stand out.
What I appreciated most was the opportunity to observe many
different health-related scenarios. In the ER, you never know
what will come through the doors and you have to be ready
to react and think quickly in a fast-paced environment. I really
liked this and my experience further solidified my plans to work
in health care.
If I was offered a full-time job, I would be more than happy
to work at this hospital. Everyone was knowledgeable in their
specific disciplines and they were dedicated to helping their
patients.
My advice to Marist students about internships is to encourage
all of them to have at least one experience. Internships open
doors for you to meet people in your field of interest. This is
really important whether you are planning on joining the
workforce after graduation or furthering your education by going
to graduate school.

Public Relations & Marketing Intern
Big Picture Media, Beverly Hills, CA
I’ve had 14 internships including MSO PR, Feeling Anxious
PR & Marketing, Shore Fire Media, SwitchBitch Records, 525
Entertainment, AXS TV, and Mark Cuban Companies. But,
I have always wanted to work in music public relations, so I
chose to intern at Big Picture Media, whose clients include
some of my favorite bands - All Time Low, We Are the In
Crowd, and Say Anything.
My work included clipping articles on clients and researching
publications that would give them great exposure. I wrote
pitches to get brand ambassadors for client Glamour Kills
Clothing Co., and used my music journalist contacts to get LA
show coverage for clients. I wrote up the South by Southwest
(SXSW) music industry public relations panel for 2015, which I
have since found out was accepted! SXSW is an annual music,
film, and interactive conference held in Austin, TX. Not only did
I value the positive energy of the organization, but the perks
were also great, like free concerts tickets, CDs, downloads and
backstage passes to the Vans Warped Tour.
My supervisors were the most encouraging group of people
I have ever met. The staff bought me pie to celebrate
my birthday! Even the founder, Dayna Travers, gave me
feedback on my work. I got to know everyone in the LA
and NYC offices and at concerts and events I networked
with musicians, managers, journalists, and other music
industry representatives. On my last day, Ms. Travers sent
me an email asking me to interview with them first when
I started my job search. I will definitely take her up on that!
My advice to Marist students is that you don’t have to look
at a listing to find an internship. Research companies you like
and use sites like LinkedIn to find contacts. Don’t lose touch
with your contacts, however, because you never know they will
come in handy!

Protective Intelligence Intern
United States Secret Service, Washington, D.C.
For most of my life I wanted to be an attorney, that is, until I
completed an internship with a law firm in Los Angeles. It was
a wonderful experience, but it taught me that being an attorney
was not right for me. After that, I thought it would be a good
idea to gain hands on experience in a government agency, since
I have always been curious about federal law enforcement. I was
drawn to the dual mission of the United States Secret Service
to both protect the President of the United States and foreign
dignitaries, and to protect the U.S. economy by combating
counterfeiters.
On a daily basis I completed open source searches regarding
protectees, analyzed and managed counterfeit bills, and assisted
agents with protective intelligence. I enjoyed the hardworking
environment mixed with a fun atmosphere. The life and job of a
Secret Service Agent is extremely stressful, therefore, the agents
like to joke around when they have a bit of downtime. One day
the agents took me out to Joint Base Andrews to see President
Obama board Air Force One. It was wonderful to see that huge
plane and all the agents in action, protecting the President.
I had several supervisors, all of whom were very professional.
They answered questions I had about a career in the Secret
Service. The agents were also very open and honest about their
careers and lifestyles. I also built an effective network of other
federal employees whom I can now reach out to whenever I have
questions. Due to my wonderful experience with this internship,
I am considering pursuing a career in federal law enforcement.
My advice to Marist students about internships is: Do Them!
Take any and every opportunity to complete more than one
internship. Whether or not it is ultimately the career direction
you want, they still offer hands on learning where you can apply
classroom knowledge. Be sure to dress your best on the first day
and then take a look at what the employees are wearing. This will
be a good indication of the appropriate dress code for the office.
And, don’t hesitate to ask questions. An internship is a learning
experience and people in the company will want to share their
knowledge with you.

Software Implementation Team Intern
McKesson Corporation, Waltham, MA
This internship will put me in a good position to enter the fast
growing field of health data analytics. It also had the benefit of
offering a very competitive salary for a pre-professional.
In 2013, McKesson acquired a small company named
Medventive. The transition of a small company into a large
corporation involves many changes, and my job was to help
standardize the practices and methods of the Medventive
software implementation division so that it fit seamlessly into
the McKesson corporate structure. I handled the transition of all
files and accounts for the software implementation team. This
involved updating all documents and then moving them from
a local shared drive to the McKesson corporate SharePoint
site. I also created walkthrough scripts for the various software
products.
My supervisor was energetic and friendly and very supportive,
but also extremely busy. I spent nearly the entire internship with
minimal supervision and therefore had to be extremely selfdirected. This was a significant challenge. But it was balanced
out by the fact that the office environment was very relaxed
and congenial. This helped the transition to go smoothly. My
manager also organized events for employees including a
luncheon, a fantasy football league, and an office Olympics. The
Olympics competition was held during a barbecue at her home,
accompanied by games like Bocce Ball, Horseshoes, and Kan
Jam. I was proud to secure the Olympic trophy for my team!
I hope to accept a full time position at McKesson after graduation,
in part because they offer a significant financial incentive program
to employees who wish to work while attending graduate school.
I would advise Marist students not to hesitate to use personal
contacts when trying to get an internship. Although I earned this
internship due to my background of education and experience, it
was a family member who initially put me in touch with a manager
at McKesson. Ask everyone you know if they can refer you to
opportunities and - nine times out of ten - they will be happy to
help you.

Major: Social Work
Social Work Intern
River Haven Youth Shelter, Poughkeepsie, NY
River Haven Youth Shelter in Poughkeepsie is the only youth
shelter in Dutchess County, offering safety, guidance, a voice,
and self-directed growth and development to troubled and
homeless youth of the Hudson Valley. River Haven lives up to
its name and that is part of the reason I chose it as my junior
internship site. The other reason was to offer assistance to the
youth of the area. Run by Donna and Pete Menconeri, River
Haven offers a compassionate, safe place for youth to receive
respite while being connected to services to help them and their
families find a better outcome and reduce conflict.
My responsibilities including facilitating groups on the dangers
of drugs and alcohol and how to make educated decisions to
abstain from using them. The internship placement lasted for 10
weeks and each week, I would facilitate a group on a new topic. I
also provided activities for youth to give feedback, share openly,
ask questions, and complete self-directed projects that reflected
what they learned from the week’s topic. I was responsible for
facilitating transportation to school and community services and
completing initial interviews with the youth and families who
came to River Haven.
There were many opportunities to network, on an individual,
social, and organizational level. If I were offered a full time
position with River Haven, I would accept it without hesitation.
And, one was offered! River Haven holds a special place in my
heart because I believe in the importance of advocating for youth
and lessening the potential for negative outcomes in a young
person’s life. Young people can turn their lives around if they
have sufficient intervention when they need it, particularly in the
adolescent years.
Throughout my education, which included earning an
Associate’s Degree from Dutchess Community College, I have
completed internships at the Dutchess County Transition Center,
Step One Addictions Counseling Center, Daytop Residential
Chemical Dependency Counseling Center, and the Institute for
Family Health, among others. As a result of what I have learned
from these experiences, I would advise other Marist students to
complete as many internships as possible because they offer
the opportunity to learn and refine your knowledge and skills in
a real world setting.

Broadcast Journalist Intern
WCBS News Radio 880. New York, NY
Since declaring my minor in journalism, I always wanted to
learn more about broadcast journalism. How do journalists in the
field write and record their stories? In addition, I’ve been curious
as to whether my major in Political Science would help me in
writing and understanding certain stories better than journalists
from other academic backgrounds. So, I chose the broadcast
internship at WCBS News Radio.
I was responsible for attending press conferences. I enjoyed this
activity; the press conferences really had me in awe. They were
all completely different from each other, so there was never a dull
day out in the field. The conferences were located at places like
the Empire State Building and Grand Central Terminal. I got to
listen firsthand to two U.S. Senators, Mayor Bill de Blasio, a world
renowned medical examiner and several famous celebrities. After
listening to the press conference, I would observe professional
journalists writing up their “wrap” reports. Then, I would head
back to headquarters to write and record my own wrap based on
that particular press conference. Usually for each story I would
write and record 2-3 wraps.
After finishing the wraps, my internship advisor would review
and critique each one. My advisor was very friendly and
knowledgeable. She really helped me understand what I should
and should not put into wrap reports. For example, usually
wrap reports are only about 45 seconds long, so only the bare
essentials will be able to fit. It’s like hiking to your campus spot;
you don’t want to have too much to slow you down.
If WCBS offered me a spot as a full-time journalist, I would
absolutely accept. It would be so exciting to report news on a
full-time basis in the “City That Never Sleeps.”
My best advice to Marist students seeking internships is to form
relationships with your professors, especially the ones in your
major field. You never know if they may be able to assist you in
obtaining an internship. They could help open doors for you, as
long as you have a relationship with them and you do well in their
classes.

the lives of Marist students physically, mentally, emotionally, and socially. Each program lasts
ten weeks and is held once a week for one hour.

at area stores. Bus tickets for the shuttle service can be purchased at the Office of Student Activities
for $1.00. Semester bus passes can also be purchased for $5.00.
Students may sign up for one RFE class with valid Marist ID, but may

How would you like to embark upon a journey through inner space? Perhaps you are seeking new
and exciting ways to nurture all aspects of your being – mind and body? I am a Certified Yoga Teacher,
Meditation Teacher and Reiki Master-Teacher. My quest for personal transformation through the ancient
healing arts began more than 30 years ago. I have learned many intriguing and powerful techniques for
personal transformation along the way, which I wish to share with you!
The Office of Student Activities offers movies for rental. All rentals are $2.00 for a two-day rental.
Look for new releases. $10 unlimited monthly rental pass available. Board games are available and
can be signed out for free with your Marist ID.
Event Information
Mind & Body with LoriAnn Paul – Mon., 6:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. Various services and programs provided by The Office of Student Activities and a calendar listing all
daily campus activities (which our office has scheduled or been informed of) may be found on our
web page at www.marist.edu/campuslife/event. Information about campus events can also be found
on campus bulletin boards, and the campus media (WMAR internet radio, MCTV television, and The
Circle, Marist student newspaper).
This 10-class series will incorporate yoga stretching and breathing techniques (designed to stretch, tone,
and strengthen particular parts of the body and to calm the nervous system), and meditations drawn
from different traditions around the globe (which help to improve relaxation/stress management skills
and improve sleeping patterns among other things
INTRAMURALS • club sports • RECREATIONAL PROGRAMS
You should bring a notebook and mat, and wear loose, comfortable clothing. Please try to arrive a few
minutes early so that you have time to settle in before class begins. Leave your worldly cares and troubles
outside the door. Picture yourself entering an environment of peace and relaxation. Lie down quietly on
your mat, relax, and allow yourself to enter into the experience of being “here and now.” There is a lot
of fun and interesting material to cover, and regular attendance is highly recommended.
Marist College is very proud of its extracurricular activities, which range from club sports to intramural
and recreational activities.
Club sports are seasonal and compete against other regional college programs. Intramurals offer any
student, whether expert or novice, the chance to play on a team without the time demands of a club
sport. Intramurals are designed to be co-ed, female, and/or male teams, and can change yearly depending on student interest. Recreational activities offer non-competitive programs ranging from golf and
pilates, to roller skating and indoor rock climbing. Students interested in participating in either club
sports, intramurals, or recreational programs should contact Intramural Office, x2482, for information
on how to get involved.
Spring 2015 Emerging Leaders Series…One More Reason to Keep
Your Eye on Your Marist E-Mail
The Emerging Leaders Program (ELP) is an exciting, non-credit certificate program providing students
with varied and unique opportunities to define, discover, and develop their personal leadership style.
Join the hundreds of students who learn to lead at Marist from an interdisciplinary team of national
and local experts.
What’s in it for you? A meaningful and practical experience…hot topics… enhanced community
connection…resume building…developing key contacts… a running record of your participation in
the program and a certificate of completion for students who attend at least five workshops…and
much more.
What does it cost? Nothing but your time and a speedy response. ELP offerings are announced via a
campus-wide e-mail. Registration for each workshop is limited to the first 50 respondents, but with
a few clicks of the mouse, you can join a large and dynamic group of future leaders. Don’t miss out
on this special opportunity.
Questions about the program can be sent to [email protected]. Look for us on the
Marist website under First Year Programs.
A message from your
Student Booster Club President
Student Booster Club offers Marist students the
opportunity to not only receive priority points,
but the chance to support your classmates in
Marist’s 23 Division I sports. For those of you
that were at the women’s basketball home
opener last season vs. Kentucky or the men’s
home opener this season vs. Army, you felt what
it is was like in a packed arena. The atmosphere
and support that you give to all student-athletes
helps them bring home wins. This semester I
hope that everyone comes to as many games
as possible, to show support for their fellow
classmates who practice hard every day to play
their best and want a large crowd to be behind
them at every game. Go Red Foxes!
