With September’s harvest celebrations behind us we start to look forward to Christmas, and yet with all of these seasonal changes going on I am reminded of that oft-quoted verse from Hebrews 8: Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. In the Bible we hear Jesus described as both a rock and a corner stone, those symbols of steadfastness and endurance. But the Bible also calls Jesus the ‘living stone’ (1 Peter 2.4). Those two words seem to contradict each other, yet in doing so they describe a steadfast Christ whose love endures and who is with us today in the Holy Spirit. And as we see autumn taking hold we can remember the words of Isaiah: the grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever (40.8).
