EVERY BEAT COUNTS:
HADASSAH’S HEART HEALTH PROGRAM™
- Janice Kociol
Every Beat Counts: Hadassah’s Heart Health
Program is a U.S. initiative that educates,
engages, and empowers women to live healthy
lifestyles by learning symptoms and prevention
tips for women’s heart disease.
Heart health education is critical. It is an issue
that is especially important and relevant to me
because I am a heart attack survivor. I’m sure
many of you used to have misconceptions
about women’s heart health. I know I did.
• I used to think heart disease was mostly a
man’s disease.
• I thought only “old” people got heart disease
and had heart attacks.
• I thought that because there was no history
of heart problems in my family, I had little to
worry about.
• I thought if I had no obvious symptoms, I did
not need to be concerned
• I thought I would know if I were having a
heart attack.
Relying on these misconceptions can cost you
your life!
Here’s an alarming reality: Heart disease strikes
more women than men. It is the #1 killer of
women: 500,000 women in the U.S. and nine
million around the world die of heart disease
every year. Each year heart disease claims the
lives of one in three women. That’s one death
every minute. Heart disease affects women of
all ages. Even young women who lead healthy
lifestyles can have heart problems. In addition, you can have a healthy heart that can be
injured by other illnesses.
Sixty-four percent of women who die suddenly of coronary heart disease had no previous
symptoms. Symptoms vary greatly between
men and women. We used to believe that
the sign of a heart attack was extreme chest
pain and pain in your left arm. But women are
more likely to experience shortness of breath,
nausea/vomiting and back or jaw pain. Other
symptoms women should look out for are
dizziness, lightheadedness or fainting, pain
in the lower chest or upper abdomen and
extreme fatigue. Sometimes the symptoms
are even more subtle. You could have a heart
attack and not even know that you had one.
Even cardiologists have had heart attacks and
did not realize it.
Sadly, 42% of women who have heart attacks
die within one year. This statistic is chilling to
any woman who has had a heart attack, and it
is the reason why heart disease prevention is
so essential.
Did you know that 82 percent of heart disease
is preventable? This is where Every Beat
Counts: Hadassah’s Heart Health Program can
help. Through this program you can empower yourself, be an advocate, and take action.
Learn more about risk factors and warning
signs by using Hadassah tools and resources
to help you live a heart healthy life.
You will find these resources on Hadassah’s
web page at http://www.hadassah.org. Go
to the pull-down menu under Health and Medicine to find information about heart health.
You will find questions to ask your doctor, a
Body Mass Index chart, and heart healthy nutritional guidelines. There is also information on
how you can build awareness in your community and learn advocacy talking points.
Hadassah Medical Organization researchers
continue to work toward fighting heart disease
around the world. HMO’s Heart Institute repairs
heavily damaged hearts. HMO collaborates
with the European Union, Mount Sinai Medical
Center, Massachusetts General, Massachusetts
Institute of Technology (MIT), The Forsyth
Institute ( Cambridge, MA), Harvard School of
Public Health, and Harvard Medical School.
You can help by making a donation in any
amount to HMO’s Research in Service to
Humanity, a program I wrote about in the
previous newsletter. To find out more about
HMO’s research on heart disease, go to http://
www.hadassah.org/health-medicine-in-israel/
research/heart-disease-research.html.
By learning more about heart health through
Every Beat Counts: Hadassah’s Heart Health
Program, you can improve your life and the
lives of people around you. Together we can
support Hadassah’s lifesaving work.

This fall I was privileged to be part of the “Ancient to
Awesome Mission” to Israel. Traveling with Hadassah means
you get a chance to connect to our work
• Meeting patients whose lives you helped to save
• Visiting the Sarah Wetsman Davidson Hospital Tower and seeing
the Nurses Station with our Region’s name on it
• Meeting some of the doctors who create the miracles we share with you
• Enjoying special experiences unique to a Hadassah mission such as planting trees in the
Negev park that is a joint Hadassah/JNF venture
• Spectacular and moving sightseeing experiences that might include a sunrise jeep tour of
the Ramon Crater, visits to include the latest on archaeology digs in Jerusalem, a taste of
Tel Aviv’s role in the start-up nation mystique that is hi-tech Israel
It’s not just a trip – you see Israel through the eyes of Israelis of many different backgrounds
and our Israeli staff provides a level of personal experience unique to Hadassah’s vision.
This year Hadassah again offers a variety of missions and I encourage everyone to take
advantage of the opportunity. I’m returning with the Presidents in May!
For Hadassah Greater Washington, 2016 was a year of change as we reorganized the
majority of our Groups into three Chapters. Today, the Chapters are cross-programming and
our volunteers are working smarter to accomplish our fundraising goals.
In 2017 Hadassah Greater Washington welcomes two new Chapters, Annapolis and Northern
Virginia. We have been working with their leaders for months to incorporate them into
Hadassah Greater Washington. Some of their members have already joined us at programs
and some of our leaders have been to programs in Annapolis and Virginia. During a weekday
or on a Sunday, the drive is not intimidating, so as we start to share calendars, I encourage
you to expand your area of attendance! We are excited they are part of us and hope they
feel the benefit of support from HGW.
In 2017, we continue the push to convert more of our members to become annual donors
(see Keepers and Chai Society ads in this newsletter.) As with your personal budget for
the year, Hadassah can only plan with money it knows it can count on. Major gift pledges
and annual gifts keep the research going, our hospital doors open, and our supplemental
programs to Youth Aliyah and scholarships to Young Judaea continuing. In addition,
Hadassah is your voice in state legislatures and in Congress on issues such as Gender Equity
in Medical Research, efforts against human trafficking, support for Israel, and other issues of
concern to women and families.
Your Chapters are engaging more members than ever before. I encourage all of you to take
the next step and help strengthen Hadassah by becoming volunteers, leaders, and annual
donors.
Shalom,
Judy

National Women’s Health Week, sponsored by the Office of Women’s Health,
U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is May 14 - May 20, 2017.
The goal of National Women’s Health Week is to empower women to make their health a
priority and help women understand what steps they can take to improve their health. As a
national supporter of this event, Hadassah is working with partners in the Coalition for
Womens’ Health Equity on day-long multi-paneled workshops to educate and highlight
current medical advancements and legislative initiatives that are important to all women.
The mission of the Coalition is to create a well-coordinated and unified force to advocate
for women’s health equity - from prevention to diagnosis and treatment and cure. Presently
there are over 20 organizations who are members of this coalition, led by Hadassah.
The Coalition for Women’s Health Equity Summit include panels exploring current and
future policy landscapes affecting women, and the economics of health with an eye
towards innovative ways to approach women’s health. We are currently working with
several health advocates and legislators to shore up their schedules to spearhead and
participate in these sessions.

HADASSAH LEARNS
SHALOM HARTMAN INSTITUTE PARTNERS WITH HADASSAH
As part of our Zionist education program, Hadassah is excited to announce its partnership
with the Shalom Hartman Institute to provide our members with an opportunity to participate
in the I Engage curriculum: Jewish Values and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict. This multimedia
curriculum uses texts, articles, and interviews, in order to examine Jewish common values
which shape the lenses we use when forming our views about Israel while providing a
framework for future conversations about Israel in a contemporary context.
Rebecca Krasnegor and Carolyn Goldstein from our Region are among a group of 18 other
Hadassah members from across the country receiving training in this curriculum under the
guidance of Rabbi Lauren Berkun, Director of Rabbinic and Synagogue Programs, Hartman
Institute of North America. After this year’s training, Rebecca and Carolyn will be facilitating
study groups for our Region during the 2017-2018 year. More information will be forthcoming.

ANNUAL GIVING
Let us tell you a story – entitled B’resheet. Please close your eyes and
imagine that you are at one of the first Hadassah meetings over 100
years ago. Sitting with Henrietta Szold and other Zionist women, you
are developing plans to provide emergency care to infants and mothers in pre-state Israel. You then expand your purpose and embrace
practical Zionism, proactive work to help meet the health needs of
Palestine’s people. Your collective first act was to collect money and
send two nurses to Palestine in 1913 to provide pasteurized milk to
infants and new mothers, and to eradicate trachoma, an easily cured
eye disease, that robbed thousands of sight.
Now open your eyes. The organization that began as a small mission
to provide emergency care to infants and mothers in pre-state Israel
flourished over a century into two world-class medical and research
centers in Jerusalem, bringing advanced medical care to all, regardless
of race, ethnicity or nationality.
Today, with 330,000 members, Associates and supporters, Hadassah
remains committed to Jewish continuity and building a better world
through medicine and healthcare, advocacy, and communities of
women.
To ensure that the work started by our founder and supported by our
mothers and grandmothers continues to survive, we need your continued involvement and commitment. An annual gift to Hadassah saves
lives and enables you to be a part of something big, something vital.
Some examples of the impact of your gift:
• Funding for new technologies and drugs to combat MS, macular
degeneration, heart disease, melanoma, breast cancer and other
diseases that affect us all;
• Providing disaster relief and first response teams to all points on the
globe;
• Advocating for gender equity in medical research and fighting
against human trafficking;
• Providing a productive future for at-risk children in Israel.
Hadassah annual giving levels begin at Chai Society ($180-$999)
which translates into 50 cents a day or $15 month. Double that
amount and you are now at the Double Chai level. Keepers begin at
$84/month $1000 and goes up from there.
Remember, all committed annual gifts, at whatever level, are appreciated and will be acknowledged.
Please contact your chapter Fundraising VPs to talk about how we
can help you identify your committed annual gift.
Let us go back to “The Beginning” and support a cause we all love.
