Old School Hall Committee A vacancy has arisen for the post of treasurer, from April. Anybody
who is interested in volunteering for this position should contact James Woodfield, Vice
Chairman, who can supply more details of the role, either by telephone (822421) or by email
([email protected]). Many thanks to Liz Joule, who has been doing this important
job so well for the last two years.

Mains Drainage : Anglian Water Fulmodeston Parish Councillors are meeting with technical
staff from Anglian Water early in April to be briefed on the current proposals for Mains Drainage
in Barney, Croxton and Fulmodeston. This will also be an opportunity to raise and to discuss
questions/concerns/problems which might arise before/during/after the work [scheduled for
2018/19?]. There will be a public meeting with Anglian Water which all parishioners will be
invited to attend to discuss the proposals and ask any questions. Hopefully a more detailed plan
of the proposals will be available before that public meeting.
However, it would be of great assistance to both the councillors and Anglian Water if some of
those concerns could be raised now to enable them to be made known to Anglian Water at the
earlier meeting.

Notes from the Parish Council At the moment it seems the proposed windfarm cabling will not
be coming through the parish.
Parish Land: Tenders are invited for the four plots of parish land, with the licence being from 1
April 2017 until 31 March 2020. The closing date for tenders will be the 24 March 2017. Anyone
wishing to submit a tender or requiring any information, please contact David Parker on 878923

The March Food Production Club Newsletter has been emailed to all members who have
supplied an email address on 1 March. There are copies available for members to collect in the
church at Barney and the Old School Hall in Fulmodeston. If you would like to join the Club, the
cost is £5 per household, paid to the membership secretary, Chris Heath (1A Barney Road,
Fulmodeston), cheques made payable to: Barney, Fulmodeston and Thursford Food Production
Club
Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal The house-to-house collection which took place in Barney at
the end of October and beginning of November raised a superb total of £192.52. Once again a
very big Thank You to every person who supported and gave so very generously to this very
worthy cause.

Farmhouse, Barney. We will watch the film, The Way in preparation for its series of Lenten
meetings.
Wednesday, 1 March, 2.00 pm – 4.00 pm – Barney and Fulmodeston Friendship Group meets
in the Old School Hall. Welcome to Hazel and Jean who joined the Group in February. If you
would like to join us please feel free to just pop in for chat and a cuppa – you would be made
very welcome.
8 April is getting very close when we will have our Table Top Sale plus Tombola, Cake stall and
Refreshments. We have a few tables still available for a fee of £5. Watch out for posters. To

will meet for our first working party of this year. Tasks to be undertaken will depend upon the
prevailing conditions! Refreshments provided.

Monday, 6 March, 1.00 pm - 4.00 pm – Village Knitting & Quilting Group with Project Linus in
the Old School Hall. The dates for our meetings in March will be 6 and 20, at the usual times of
1.00 pm until 4.00pm, in the Old School Hall.
We will be having a stand at the Friendship Group Sale on April 8, and are busy making lots of
new items for sale to raise funds for our group materials. Please do try to support us.

Tuesday, 7 March, 7.30 pm – Barney, Fulmodeston & Thursford Food Production Club Talk in
the Old School Hall. Popular speaker Shelagh Ashe will speak to us on Gardens through History and tell how over the centuries our gardens have changed in response to technical innovations
and cultural changes. There will be a raffle and light refreshments. Entry fee £2 for nonmembers.
At this meeting it will be possible to book onto the following forthcoming visits:
• May 24 – Holme Hale Hall – £10 a ticket
• June 7 – Cambridge Botanic Gardens – £11.50 for members & £12.50 for non members
for the coach. Tickets for entry to the gardens to be purchased on the day (max £5)
• July 27 – Hoecroft Plants – £5
• Sept 13 – Natural Surroundings – £3
Payment will be required at the time of booking, please.
Wednesday, 8 March – Barney and Fulmodeston Walkers’ Group meet at the Old School Hall at
10.00 am for 10.15 am departure. Our walks in March are on Wednesdays 8 & 22. If you would

Lent at Lodge Farmhouse, Barney and will focus on the theme of Pilgrimage.
Friday, 10 March, 7.00 pm for 7.30 pm – Whist Drive & Raffle in the Old School Hall. Entry £2
with a raffle, newcomers welcome and we ensure the evening is a light hearted and friendly

Saturday, 11 March, 10.00 am to 1.00 pm – Barney and Fulmodeston History Group will be
holding a coffee morning with displays of members’ particular historical interests. Tea, coffee
and cakes will be available and all donations will go to the Group’s fund for a Memorial to the
airmen who lost their lives when their plane was brought down in the village by enemy fire in
the Second World War.

Saturday, 18 March, 7.00 pm for 7.30 pm – Fundraising Race Night in the Old School Hall. ‘And
they're off....’ Join us for a fun evening at the races, listen to the form, place your bets and
watch your horse and jockey race to the finish line. All proceeds to Old School Hall. Entry £2.

Wednesday, 27 March, 7.30 pm – Barney and Fulmodeston Book Group meet in the Old School
Hall. Through March we are reading Brooklyn by Colm Tiobin. Please do come and join us if you
enjoy reading, are interested in discussing your thoughts on the authors, the tales they tell and
in reading books you may not otherwise have chosen. We are a friendly group who are keen to
welcome new members from any of the surrounding villages. Please do just turn up or give me a
call if you need further information.

DATES FOR YOUR DIARY
Saturday, 1 April, 11.00 am – The Great American Song Book Concert in Christ Church. Stephen
Miles will be joined by Kathleen Wyatt and Jane Roberson. They will perform well-known
standards from American musicals. Entrance is free with a retiring collection for the church. It
will be S’Wonderful!
Monday, 3 April, 7.30 pm – Annual Parish Meeting 2017 will be held in the Old School Hall. All
parishioners and other members of the public are welcome to attend. If you have any questions,
comments or queries that you want to raise or to be discussed at this meeting please notify the

Thursday, 6 April, 7.30 pm – History Group Talk in the Old School Hall on the Anglo Saxon
graveyard at Ryburgh.
Friday, 14 April – Friday, 21 April – Eddie Goodridge will be holding another one-man exhibition
and sale of his oil paintings in the Old School Hall. Entry is free and the Hall will be open all day.
Saturday, 22 April, 2.00pm – 5.00 pm – Fun Quiz with Afternoon Tea, raffle, etc. in the Old
School Hall. Please come along and join us for a light-hearted quiz with tempting food (all diets
can be catered for) in aid of Parkinson’s UK for this years Parkinson’s Awareness Week. £5 per
person. Also raffle and stalls to include dvd’s, books, plants, clothing etc. For more information

Saturday, 29 April, 7.00 pm for 7.30 pm start – Fulmodeston and Barney Village Cinema will be
showing the BAFTA nominated film adaptation of the 2015 book The Girl on the Train. A
divorcee becomes entangled in a missing persons investigation that promises to send
shockwaves throughout her life. Starring Emily Blunt and Justin Theroux. Bar, popcorn and ice
creams available. £4.50 per ticket. Bring a cushion!
Regular Activities
Fulmodeston and Barney Social Club will be open every Sunday from 2.00 pm - 5.00 pm.
PLEASE NOTE during March, with the exception of 10 March when there is a whist night, the bar
in the Old School Hall will be closed on Friday evenings. This is in response to falling attendance.
The position will be reviewed for April and subsequent months.
Mobile Library calls every four weeks – Next visit, Wednesday, 1 March at Pony Stable Cottage,
The Street, Barney 12.05 pm and Yew Tree Farm, The Street, Barney 12.20 pm.
The Mobile Post Office will be parked outside the Old School Hall every Wednesday from 12.35
pm - 1.35 pm.
