Man Portable Power
The increasing deployment of electronic equipment for warfighters in the field – from night-vision goggles, computers and communication devices to
GPS and sensors – has increased the military‘s need for lightweight, reliable and portable electrical power supply. As a result, the the military is faced
with significant challenges to supply this increased power.
Batteries are currently the solution of choice. Batteries for different devices have to be replaced or recharged, requiring frequent interruptions to the
mission, complicating logistics as well as adding weight to the warfighter‘s equipment supply. Meeting the power demands of advanced equipment
requires a more sophisticated approach than batteries alone.
Energy Network
By combining the intelligent power solutions JENNY and the SFC Power Manager the most efficient energy network is created. In combination, JENNY
plus SFC Power Manager can recharge several batteries and power various equipment at the same time. The SFC solution establishes an energy network that delivers a maximum of power and flexibility at a minimum of weight. On a 72 hour mission for example, the weight burden of a warfighter can
be reduced by 80 % in comparison to only having batteries to supply your power. The energy network is interoperable with all standards. New equipment
can be integrated by exchanging a single cable.

Hybrid concept
SFC Energy offers a unique hybrid approach by combining fuel cells with existing, standard batteries. The fully integrated fuel cell/battery hybrid
system offers a safe, lightweight, reliable power source for non-stop equipment operation by warfighter in the field and a lightweight alternative
to carrying extra batteries and recharging systems.
Up to 80% weight reduction
Mobile Power
Military missions require power for electrical devices on and off board of military vehicles supporting warfighter missions in even the most austere
environments.
During military operations vehicles are required to supply power to on-board devices such as radios, communication equipment, weapon systems, and
electronic optical systems. Moreover they act as a charging station for the warfighter. Starting a vehicle’s engine to charge batteries entails emissions,
waste of fuel and could result in significant noise and possible detection by enemy forces.
In the field, warfighters need power supply for sensors, weapons, metering devices, and surveillance cameras that often have to operate remotely, out
of sight and continuously. Battery power in these locations is limited. Military generators, the common solution, are very heavy and generate visible
emissions, detectable odors and heat. Solar options are often inconvenient and unreliable.
EMILY – long lasting, reliable power supply for on- and off-vehicle applications
Integrated into tactical vehicles or in the field, the EMILY provides quiet, continuous and independent power supply. The fuel cell operates as a ruggedized fuel cell power generator for mobile devices ranging from radio and other communication equipment, night-vision and navigation devices, and
computers – regardless of weather and climate.
EMILY – on-vehicle fuel cell power system
• Keeps batteries automatically
fully charged
• Saves fuel – charges
batteries without the engine
• Is literally non-detectable
• Supports silent watch
• Is maintenance-free
Fuel Cell EMILY and SFC Power Manager extend
runtimes of on-board batteries and supply electronic equipment with energy at the same time
EMILY – off-vehicle fuel cell power system
• Runtime extender for all
battery based systems
• Enhances runtime of unmanned sensors
and telecommunication
• Recharges batteries
in the field
• Is man portable

Load
EMILY is well suited for extended unmanned operations and it will continue to produce electrical power supply for several weeks without intervention. For example, a 10-liter fuel cartridge weighing a mere 8 kg (18 lbs) has enough capacity for more than 10 kWh. A single fuel cartridge has thus 33 times higher energy
density compared to a standard lead acid battery. To provide the same amount of energy using conventional batteries, you would have to transport 270 kg (595 lbs).
Over 10 times longer runtime
SFC Energy
SFC Energy is a market leader in fuel cell technology and related power supply solutions for mobile and off-grid power applications, having successfully
sold commercial products to defense, industrial, law enforcement, and private end users for several years. The company with operations in U.S. and
Germany offers a unique hybrid approach by combining fuel cells with other sources of power, including traditional batteries and solar panels. SFC‘s
products have reliably logged millions of operating hours in various user environments.
SFC Energy has developed a strong customer base within the U.S. and NATO defense communities, where its fuel cells provide the warfighter a dependable, quiet and lightweight power source. The company delivers tailored customer energy solutions. SFC products give warfighters in the field improved
mobility, agility, effectiveness, and safety, along with reduced weight, reduced logistic costs, low detectability, and a smaller environmental footprint.
Technology – the basics of SFC fuel cells
This is how it works: When connected to a rechargeable battery, the SFC fuel cell will constantly monitor the battery’s charge state. Once this drops
below a predefined value, the fuel cell will automatically start recharging the battery. Once the battery is completely recharged, the fuel cell automatically reverts to standby mode. The process involves no moving parts and no combustion whatsoever, emitting only carbon dioxide and water – no more
than a child’s breath. SFC fuel cells use methanol as a fuel, a liquid alcohol which comes in cartridges that are easy to store, transport and ship. Methanol is safe to use and poses no hazard to the warfighter. Methanol’s most important property is its extremely high energy density at very low weight.
SFC cartridges are certified for cargo transport by air, sea and land.
SFC Energy Approved
SFC Energy delivers universal power supply for extended runtime for all electronic devices.
“SFC Energy Approved” is a certification of electronic equipment that has run through compatibility checks
with SFC products. It is therefore verified that the approved product functions well with SFC power solutions.
Additionally it states that the efficiency of the product is improved by combining the power generation with fuel cells and can
therefore meet warfighter requirements in the most effective way. All in all, “SFC Energy Approved” simplifies logistics concerning power
supply in the field and standardizes green fuel cell power.
