Westend Bath and Kitchen designer Sarah Stott helped transform Brenda Fitzpatrick’s
original kitchen (below) into a bright, modern space with an island that has become the
focal point of the space when friends and family gather for food and drink.
When Brenda Fitzpatrick and John Tomassini purchased
their 21-year-old home, they knew they’d be carrying out a
kitchen renovation soon. “Prior to the renovation, we didn’t have any layout space
for the stove and we were constantly manoeuvering into
each other when cooking or looking for something,” said
Brenda. The couple has lived in Oxford Mills, located 10 minutes
from Kemptville, for the past two years. They went to the
Ottawa Home Show last March looking for information on
kitchen renovations. “We knew when we purchased the home that a kitchen
renovation was a must,” said Brenda. “The original kitchen’s
design was odd, outdated and cramped. The green countertops had to go!” They needed dramatic changes to get exactly what they
envisaged, and were “really impressed” with Westend Bath
and Kitchen. Westend

“I think we were very lucky to have found Westend designer
Sarah Stott and contractor Dave Edwards,” she said. “Sarah
was very helpful in assisting us throughout the planning
stages with suggestions for flooring, cabinets and hardware. “Brenda and John were a pleasure to work with!” said
designer Sarah Stott. Their requests were to have a larger,
more functional, eat-in kitchen with a lot of storage. “Their renovation was a complete gut, removing all of
the flooring for the kitchen, dining room and living room,”
said Sarah. “The original kitchen was in much need of an
upgrade; I couldn’t believe the out of place island that
was originally installed. We changed the layout to create a
large eat-in kitchen. “We closed in unwanted doorways, relocated most of their appliances and installed a substantial island with a prep sink,” continued Sarah. “We chose
a white shaker door for the cabinets and a dark Cambrian
quartz for the countertop.
The contrast in colour really makes the space shine, especially with their gorgeous stone mosaic backsplash. When
it came to choosing finishes, our personal styles were
very similar. I love the simplicity of a traditional kitchen,
yet with a contemporary flair.” John and Brenda are now
thrilled to be able to use the kitchen “without bumping
into each other.” “Ninety-nine per cent of the renovation
was done in three weeks,” said Brenda. “It was a very pleasant experience from beginning to end.
Dave and his assistant Jim were here on time, every
day, helpful and very professional.” One of their favourite
parts of the kitchen is the island. “This has become the
focal point of the kitchen with family and friends gathering for food and drink,” she said. “The comments have
all been very positive. The quartz countertops have been
popular as well as the kitchen design. The kitchen is definitely brighter and inviting.” “None of this could have been completed without our
amazing contractor, Dave Edwards,” said Sarah. “He is just
one of Westend’s outstanding, efficient and reliable contractors. I hope Brenda and John enjoy their kitchen for
years to come.” Westend Bath and Kitchen is a member of the National
Kitchen and Bath Association, the Ottawa Chapter of the

By installing an L-shaped countertop and moving the sink around the corner, Westend
Bath and Kitchen designer Rebecca Neale was able to create a tremendous amount of
new counter work space and cabinet storage for her clients compared to the original
design, below.
Sharon Cahill and her husband Paul Caldwell are enjoying
the functional serenity of their newly renovated kitchen in
very different ways. And yet, for this retired Riverview Park
couple, harmony in the “ship’s galley” is the new reality. Sharon finally has the kitchen of her dreams, a place
where she can roll out a pie crust or cut the vegetables
for a meal without having to struggle against a
dysfunctional countertop work space, an undersized
refrigerator, and cabinet storage more befitting a sailboat
than their immaculate 1959 suburban bungalow. The design of the new L-shaped quartz countertop,
imaginative cabinet and drawer arrangements, flexible
lighting options, and the new energy-efficient
appliances have created a true cook’s kitchen that is both
eye-pleasing and efficient.
Westend

There is no wasted space. It’s the kitchen Sharon has been
wanting for years. “I just love it,” she said. For Paul, well let’s
just say he is enjoying the quiet coming out of the kitchen
these days. “I love the quiet, serene atmosphere while she’s
in there,” he said. “I don’t hear ‘I hate this kitchen’ anymore.” The couple’s path to kitchen bliss began in earnest – as it
does for so many of Westend Bath and Kitchen’s clients –
with a trip to the annual springtime Ottawa Home & Garden
Show.
Sharon and Paul had researched some kitchen ideas
online, so were ready to meet with the professionals in
person. “We didn’t rush into it,” Paul said. They spoke
to several companies at the show, but soon came back
to the approachable representatives from Westend
Bath and Kitchen – company president Brian Mallett and
designer Rebecca Neale – whose enthusiasm and ideas
seemed the perfect mix for their project. “We already knew
they had a good reputation for the work they do,” Paul said. Renovating such an important space in the house calls for
careful attention to the needs of the client, as well as an eye
for functional and attractive interior design. Westend Bath
and Kitchen designer Rebecca Neale knew that Sharon
and Paul had some pretty clear ideas about what they
were looking for, so she worked closely with the couple to
come up with a final design. “I asked Sharon to email me pictures of the colours and
styles that she liked,” Rebecca says, “and these were the
inspiration for the warm tones, slate tiles and the quartz
countertop that we eventually chose. The first thing I
noticed when I visited their home to take measurements
was that they were lacking counter and cabinet space.
Wrapping the countertop along two walls and moving
the sink to the new counter section underneath the other
kitchen window gave them much more useful work and
storage area.” One of the tougher decisions involved the
choice of tile for the countertop backsplash.
Sharon knew that choosing rough-surfaced tile might be
unconventional, but she wanted to avoid having any garish
shine from the under-cabinet lights take anything away
from the elegant beauty of her new cabinets.
“The way I was raised,” she said, “you spent your time
in the kitchen. I like earth tones, and this is warm and
inviting.” Paul especially appreciated that Westend Bath
and Kitchen handled all of the project management. “The
scheduling was great,” he said. “It was easy to plan our
day. The job took 17 days, but the contractors (Ivan and
Eric Gagnon) cleaned up every day.
It wasn’t as painful as I thought it would be.” “This
renovation was a pleasure,” Sharon added. “Rebecca was
great.” “Sharon and Paul were an absolute pleasure to
work with,” Rebecca says. “They now have a much more
functional and eye-pleasing kitchen than they did before,
which is the whole point, and they’ll be able to enjoy it for
years to come.” Westend Bath and Kitchen offers a world of new
possibilities from their showroom at 1660 Woodward
Dr., two blocks south of Carling Avenue between
Maitland and Clyde. Find them online at www.

The functional and beautiful kitchen island is the grand centrepiece of this remodeled
kitchen space from Westend Bath and Kitchen. Below: The Orser’s original, cramped
kitchen.
Jeff and Karyne Orser’s 35-yearold Convent Glen North
home was perfect for their young family, except for one
thing. With a new baby on the way and two girls under
the age of four already at home, the kitchen walls were
beginning to close in. “There was no way we were going to be able to manage
a family of five in the old kitchen,” Jeff said as he cradled
his newborn daughter. “The old table we had only
sat four. There was too little counter space, too little useful
cabinet space, and we were using a pantry in the back
entranceway to store pots and pans.” Karyne grew up with the simple room layouts of Montreal
apartment living, so it didn’t make sense to her to have a
sitting room, family room and dining room, and then have
to put up with a cramped kitchen.
Westend
Bath • Kitchen
Windows • Doors
“I just didn’t see the practicality of it,” she said. “We decided
to turn the sitting room into a dining room, and expand
into the old dining room to make a huge kitchen. It was
my mom who suggested we make a kitchen island part of
that vision.” Jeff, an engineer with the federal government, did the
logical next thing and drew up a 3D plan of their vision
in his computer. That was the easy part. Finding the
right company to help turn their dream kitchen into a
reality would be critical, especially with their busy family
lifestyle. As it turned out, the solution was a lot closer to home than
they realized. Westend Bath and Kitchen designer Melissa
Cleaver explains: “The Orsers were not typical clients in
regards to the process. One of our Westend contractors,
Sean Cassidy, had done some work for them two years
earlier through an outside referral. When it came time to
do the kitchen work it was Sean who referred them back
to Westend.” The fact that Westend went above and beyond to
accommodate the family’s needs and to fully understand
their vision was an enormous relief to Jeff and Karyne “They
were really good,” Karyne said. “Melissa even opened up the
showroom for us on a Sunday afternoon so we could look
at samples.” “
The Orsers had a lot of good ideas of what they wanted,”
Melissa says. “In the end, I think we pulled all the elements
together and achieved a great design.
” The large, bright kitchen design includes new window
and patio door placements, improved counter and
cupboard arrangements, an effective lighting suite, and
the pièce de résistance – the beautiful and multifunctional
Cambria quartz-topped kitchen island, a perfect work area
for growing children to help prepare meals and do their
school projects. “The customised island is the centrepiece of the
kitchen,” Karyne said. “We asked for a sink, a wine rack, a
place to put the garbage and recycling bins – everything we
asked for was incorporated.” As a public health
nursekitchen.com. and self-described germophobe, the
non-porous quartz countertop was an easy choice for
Karyne. “We weren’t organized in our old kitchen,” Karyne
said. “We couldn’t be. Our pots and pans, plastic containers,
glassware... everything was in piles.
And now, everything’s all planned out. Everything has its
own space.” “For us, this is way more functional,” Jeff added.
“We plan to live here for a significant period of time, so the
kitchen was definitely something we wanted to do.” “This is the most important room in the house,” Karyne
said. “It’s the life of the house, really. Everyone gravitates
toward this place. There was no point in waiting 15 years
to do this. We thought we may as well just do it now and be
able to enjoy it for the next 25 years.” The Westend Bath and Kitchen showroom is at 1660

Westend Bath and Kitchen designer Sarah Stott transformed Peter
Kuzyshyn’s original bathroom into a completely accessible, threshold-free room which can accommodate Peter’s wheelchair.
When retired Navy Lieutenant Commander Peter Kuzyshyn
needed a bathroom renovation in his new home in
Orléans, he and his wife Irene chose Westend Bath
and Kitchen for help. Peter, who has multiple sclerosis and
is confined mostly to a wheelchair, is very satisfied
with the result. “The bathroom meets my needs and is also
aesthetically pleasing,” he says. “Sometimes bathrooms
designed to be accessible lose their aesthetic value. With ours, it looks nice first, and then you notice it’s
accessible.” “They wanted a full fourpiece bathroom, a
timeless style in neutral, shell-tones, and not hospitallooking,” says Westend designer Sarah Stott, who
designed the accessible bathroom with light blue and
turquoise accents. Westend
Bath • Kitchen

“The bathroom had to be completely threshold-free to
accommodate his wheelchair. We designed the vanity so
his chair could fit completely underneath the sink area.” She
took detailed measurements to ensure everything fit. “It’s
a spa-like bathroom that accommodates his needs and
still looks fashionable,” says Stott. “It makes the room look
more spacious than it actually is.” When designing the space, she wanted to create an
oasis for all members of the family. “We chose fixtures that
have two functions, such as a grab bar that acts as a towel
holder.” Everything was designed using National Kitchen
and Bath Association guidelines for accessible bathrooms.
“Working with Peter was a great experience,” she says,
“and designing his bathroom definitely challenged me
creatively.”
Westend created another successful renovation for the
Kanata ensuite bathroom of Marlene Medaglia and Ed
Gurgurewicz. “It was a large renovation and everything
went perfectly,” says Medaglia. “We were very pleased with
the people involved, the materials and workmanship.” Medaglia felt that designer Judy Staniszewski “really
listened to what we disliked about the old bathroom
and what would be important for us to have in the new
bathroom. The design captured exactly what we wanted.” “The
Bathroom
Renovation Contract
was
comprehensive and easily understood,” she says. “The
Bathroom Renovation Material List and the Bathroom
Renovation Labour Description List were detailed so that
we knew exactly what was needed and what work had to
be completed. It allowed us to follow the whole renovation
project with ease and understanding.
” The couple is also pleased with their customized
cabinets, customized glass walls and door for the shower,
and the customized quartz countertop for the sink area. “The men who were responsible for these installations did
a wonderful job. The project started and ended on time. The
whole team worked well together. It was a large project and
we are pleased that everything went as it was supposed to
happen.
“If we require any further renovations for our other
bathrooms or kitchen we definitely would return to
Westend Bath and Kitchen.” The Westend sales team
and installers regularly attend information and product
seminars so that they can offer Westend customers the best
choices for their renovation projects. “We really get to know the clients, how they will use
their rooms and what their requirements are,” says Brian
Mallett, owner of the long-standing family business. “We
can do custom work for whatever is needed. Our installers
take pride in what they do and are very respectful while
working in our customers’ homes.” Westend Bath and
Kitchen are members of the Better Business Bureau Honour
Roll and pride themselves on an “A+” rating every year for
25 years. They are also members of the National Kitchen and Bath

Westend Bath and Kitchen designer Peter Schneider transformed Janice and Ken
Brown’s old kitchen (below) from drab to fabulous as part of a stunning renovation.
Janice Brown and her daughter Kourtney spent years looking
at show homes for renovation and decorating ideas in their
Orléans neighbourhood. Now, thanks to Westend Bath and
Kitchen, their 27-year old home is an updated “show home”
itself and they didn’t have to move. “The combination of
materials and the free-standing, modern-looking tub are
the most prominent feature,” says Westend designer Peter
Schneider.
“Throughout most the house there is the same modern
theme, and similar cabinetry and countertops. It’s a very
modern cabinetry, and the door is a pillow-look with
rounded corners.” Janice and her husband Ken had raised
a family in the twostorey home they had bought new, and
they still loved it when they began looking around 10 years
ago. Nevertheless, Ken’s wife and daughter came back from
the show homes and told him “we were selling, and that
these new houses were what we needed.” “I went to look,” he says, “and while the more open
concepts were inviting, the fact that they were smaller or
much larger in size and were priced higher than ours meant
in all cases we would have to mortgage again.” Further, he
says, those new homes on their “postage stamp lots” didn’t
offer the features they had dreamed about in a home.
“We wanted modern spacious bathrooms, granite,
glass, tiles and good lighting and ventilation. We enjoy
cooking and our kitchen is our gathering place to relax
informally.” In their family kitchen, they envisaged granite
counters, tiled floors, efficient lighting, a slide-out
pantry and cupboards and drawers in the right places, a
great stove vented to the outside, with a counter-depth
fridge. “We wanted power for our centre island and space
underneath for the heavier things we use there.
We had no idea what these dreams would cost … We
talked and talked and everyone but Dad said, ‘let’s just
move.’ ” They procrastinated, not wanting to leave their
longtime home, but not wanting “a nightmare” in order to
stay. More time passed — “this was a hard choice” — and
Ken didn’t want to let go, even though family pressure was
building on him to “get with the plan.
” Visits to showrooms followed to get an idea of costs and
procedures to realize their new renovated home. One
Saturday, the couple stopped into Westend Bath
and Kitchen “just to gather more data and look at more
options.” Their Westend visit ended up being love at first
sight. “We met a man who was our age and we talked for
hours about our dream,” says Ken, describing designer Peter
Schneider. “Peter smiled through it all and kept saying ‘we
can do that.’ He showed us albums of work they had done
covering a wide range of work from simple jobs to major
renovations.
What beautiful work it was! The showroom was impressive
as well.” Within a week, the Browns were back to look at
what Schneider had designed. “To our surprise, he designed
it exactly as we had seen it in our mind. Still without
commitment, we chose cabinets and finish, tiles, granite, a
European Spa free-standing bathtub, rain head shower,
body jets and wand with a bench in the glassed-in shower.
We picked faucets and sinks right down to grout colour …
We were afraid that we had gone too crazy and this had
been a silly exercise going nowhere.” Peter presented them
with a revised design package, with the prices at the back.
“We flipped the pages and then looked at each other. My
wife’s eyes were smiling, and our dream was born!” Peter gave them a detailed plain language contract and
estimated the work would take eight weeks. “Work was well
planned and executed and the team of renovators were
kind and considerate and real professionals. Every day
they asked if we were happy. ‘Is there anything you want?
Is that as you want it?’ And even though there were small
changes along the way which could not be helped, Westend
stepped up when it was their issue or we worked things out
if it was ours.
” The Browns were thrilled with their total kitchen
renovation, ensuite, powder room and laundry room
and continue to recommend Westend Bath and Kitchen
highly. “We are glad we went with an experienced,
established, outfit,” says Ken. “They knew what they were
doing, had the background and resources to deliver, and
the pride in their work to give us our dream.” Westend Bath and Kitchen offers a wide variety of highquality products to suit every taste and budget. They are

Westend Bath and Kitchen designer Rebecca Neale transformed Greg Hug and
Maria Rocha-Hug’s original kitchen (bottom) into a spectacular, modern space.
Greg Hug and Maria Rocha-Hug’s two-storey Orléans home
was built in 1988 and the couple bought it in 1997. “It was
ready for a reno,” Maria says. “Now it’s much more modern
and much nicer to look at.”
The couple renovated the powder room, the kitchen,
their ensuite bathroom, and a toilet was replaced in another
bathroom. Because the kitchen was adjacent to the family
room, they updated that too by refinishing the hardwood
floors and painting the oak fireplace all white. Greg Hug’s favourite part of the renovation is the shower
with the rain head coming directly from the ceiling. Greg,
60, is six foot five and so not all showers go over his head,
explains his wife. “Having something custom made was very
beneficial.” Maria, on the other hand, is four foot 11 inches, and so
she appreciated the increased function in the kitchen. “We
have a pullout pantry, pot drawers and space for all the
appliances,” says Maria, 51. “The one thing we didn’t put in
was pendant lights over the peninsula because of Greg’s
height, which would have blocked his view.” “Redoing the Hugs’ kitchen and ensuite was a fun job,”
says designer Rebecca Neale of Westend Bath and
Kitchen. “They had a good idea of what they wanted, and
were open to suggestions,” she says. “They originally had oak
cabinets that did not go up to the ceiling, which I see a lot
in my line of work. I figured why not remove the bulkhead
and use that space to make the kitchen appear taller in
height. They also had an oddly shaped island and so I
brought the cabinetry out further to give them a better work
space.” She also incorporated a bookshelf which faces the
living room, tying the two spaces together nicely. “The Hugs chose quartz countertops which are
currently the most durable material on the market,” says
Rebecca, “and they knew exactly what colour they wanted.
That made tying the rest of the colours together fairly easy.
We debated about the backsplash tiles, and as you can
see from the pictures, it has a huge impact. I love the
final results!” In the ensuite, “we went for a clean spa-like
feel,” she says. “My favourite aspect is the backsplash tiles
running vertically along the back wall of the shower. It looks
like rain falling where the rain head is in the centre of the
shower space.
The cabinetry is functional with each of the mirrors being
recessed medicine cabinets which pivot outward so you
can see the back of your head when styling your hair.” While
there were some unexpected challenges on the job, “we are
dedicated as a company to make sure our customers
are 100 per cent satisfied,” Rebecca says. “That’s really
important. I’m also committed to helping the process run
as smoothly as possible, and to be there for our clients.” “Dealing with designer Rebecca Neale made the
whole process much easier,” says Maria Rocha-Hug. “We
knew there was someone we could rely on and answer our
questions.” Westend Bath and Kitchen is a member of the National

Westend Bath and Kitchen designer Valerie Laba helped transform Edna Ibbotson’s
original bathroom (below) into a bright, modern space with a new free-standing bathtub
and a separate glassed-in shower.
Edna Ibbotson and Bill Purdy chose Westend Bath and
Kitchen to renovate the ensuite bathroom in their
townhouse overlooking the Kanata Golf and Country Club,
and now she says “it’s perfect.” “I’d gone to the home
reno shows and spoken to them there,” said Edna. “I decided
I was ready to go ahead, went into the Westend Bath and
Kitchen showroom, met with designer Valerie Laba –
and she took my ideas and put them into fruition.” The
townhouse was built in 1994. “
We needed updating and redoing, and I wanted to have
a larger shower, with some handheld bars because we
are seniors,” said Edna, 66. “We wanted to upgrade, redo
and make it nicer. Before, it was a square shower, and now
there’s a new freestanding tub and a separate glassedin shower (with bench), new counters, and a new higher
height toilet.” “I’ve been designing now for 14 years and every room is
unique,” stated Westend designer Valerie Laba. “The closet
removal in this layout provided the optimal location for
a custom angled shower. Our 3-D program brings it to
life before a single tile is removed. From start to finish, I’m
here to plan, answer questions and pull all aspects of the
project together.”
The couple loves the choice of rainhead or slide-bar
when showering. “I especially love that after (using it) I
can dry myself and keep warm inside the shower because
there’s so much room,” said Edna. The shower ceiling was
raised, concealing the exhaust fan. It was also the perfect
opportunity to add heated floors, making the room more
comfortable. The old bathroom wall colour was sea mist
blue, but Edna and Valerie chose white fixtures and cream
tiles for the new creation. “My customers are looking to set a tone and I enjoy helping
them accomplish that. It’s very satisfying to see it take shape,”
said Valerie. “The antique white vanity, latte quartz and
brushed nickel faucets finish the look.” Edna was extremely
pleased with the workmanship and remarked, “the tiler was
first class, I would call him a master tiler.” “The quality of our products and services is unsurpassed
and is evident in the finished product,” commented Valerie.
“We receive great feedback regarding our installers all the
time, and offer a two-year warranty on our labour.” “Edna and Bill have a great attitude, making my job that
much more enjoyable,” said Valerie. We discussed the
best way to execute everything from start to finish. This
project is truly a testament to great teamwork. They have
a beautiful home and I’m so glad they now have their dream
bathroom to enjoy within it!” The couple in turn was delighted with the service from
Westend. “What was great was that Valerie would call
or email back right away. My rapport with Valerie was
excellent. She was prompt and helpful, very professional
… everything went very smoothly. They followed up and
were very polite. I was very happy with them. It just looks
great; it’s fabulous.” Westend Bath and Kitchen is a member of the National

Westend Bath and Kitchen designer Rebecca Neale helped transform Frans De Bruyn’s
original kitchen (below) into a spectacular, modern space with lots of natural light.
It is not uncommon for Westend Bath and Kitchen to
see returning customers visiting their showroom for their
upcoming renovation projects. They pride themselves on
knowing that each renovation will stand up through time,
allowing homeowners to truly enjoy their new space. This
was the case with Sandy Hill homeowner Frans De
Bruyn, who originally had his bathroom renovated by the
long-standing, family-owned business.
“I was surprised to see that the job had been done 11 years
ago,” De Bruyn said, after looking at his original invoice.
“The bathroom was still in pristine condition — and I
don’t believe that was thanks to my housekeeping.” While
at Westend, he mentioned that he needed a part for his
faucet. He was delighted to discover that Westend would
fix the tap at no charge, even though the warranty had long
expired. De Bruyn had been procrastinating for years about
doing something with his outdated kitchen; Westend Bath
and Kitchen remained his renovator of choice.
“The house is nearly 70 years old and was in pretty bad
shape,” says De Bruyn. “It really needed a refurbishment.” A
former addition to the rear of the house had made the
dining room area dead space, he said. “ There was a partition
wall dividing the dining room from the kitchen, which was
not a loadbearing wall.
The idea was to remodel the kitchen by expanding the
space into one large room.” When the addition had
been built, there was no window placed in the kitchen,
making the room quite dark. “Part of the plan became to
close up the odd openings and create areas for a large
window and back door.” This would allow the space to feel
less enclosed. De Bruyn discussed the project with designer
Rebecca Neale of Westend Bath and Kitchen. “When
I walked into the space, it absolutely needed work,”
said Neale. “There were awkward entrances from the
addition and the cabinetry was in really bad shape. I had
the opportunity to move appliances around and truly come
up with a functional design. Projects like these are my
favourite because I can get creative!” wants, which is always important. That way we know
exactly how to develop the perfect design, so there is
no disappointment in the end.” As a designer, she said
her favourite part of the kitchen is the offi ce area which
includes the addition of a new window. “Frans had asked
for the kitchen to extend into what was a small living
room area. I suggested that an offi ce/ desk area would be
a great design feature, and then I made the space come to
life.” “I had been thinking about this for a long time and
told Rebecca what my ideas were,” De Bruyn said. “She
contributed a lot of valuable ideas when she came over to
measure the space with her project manager. They were
very thorough.” The work started in mid- January and was
completed on budget and on time. The entire space was
gutted, from the ceiling to the fl oor, truly allowing for a
complete transformation. “Now it is quite remarkable,”
he says. “I thought my surroundings weren’t terribly
important to me — I can live simply — but the quality of
this renovation has transformed the ground fl oor of the
house. It’s eye-opening.” Westend Bath and Kitchen has been making Ottawa’s
renovation dreams come true for 27 years. Their goal
is to make every client’s renovation their own, and it is
obvious they have succeeded once again! Westend Bath

He was very appreciative that Rebecca Neale and Westend
Bath and Kitchen did not waver from the plan’s original
budget. “The project ended up costing exactly what
I had thought of as a budget and what Rebecca had
originally priced out for me.”
“Frans was amazing to work with,” said Neale. “He gave
me a budget to work with and told me his needs and

Westend Bath and Kitchen designer Sarah Stott created this attractive, threshold-free
bathroom for an Orléans couple who required wheelchair access.
There is an attractive new look to multi-generational barrierfree family living in Ottawa, and it begins with a visit to the
Westend Bath and Kitchen renovation centre on Woodward
Drive. The company’s 28-year commitment to offering
clients the very best in home renovation services includes
some exciting new possibilities for families looking to stay
in their homes for as long as possible.
If all that’s needed to keep everyone in the family comfortable
at home is a specialized bathroom or kitchen arrangement,
Westend Bath and Kitchen has the design expertise, the
installation skill sets and the specialty products needed to
deliver the highest quality renovation solutions. Barrier-free design includes such considerations as
access space under sinks for mobility devices, lowered
counters and cabinets, a roll-in shower and specialized
fixtures such as strategically positioned grab bars and builtin seats. Done properly, the results can be as far away from
the utilitarian picture of an accessible room as one could
imagine. “We are talking about renovations with accessible
features that are not obvious,” says Westend owner Brian
Mallett. “We don’t want things to look institutional, so
we design everything so that you see the aesthetics of a
beautiful bathroom before you realize it’s an accessible
bathroom.
It doesn’t look like a hospital bathroom.” It is hard
to imagine how the results could be anything but
beautiful given Westend’s much-lauded attention
to detail and the company’s use of award-winning
Canadian- designed fixtures from Invisia by HealthCraft in
Ottawa. Invisia’s signature series of bathroom safety bars
and other “hidden in plain sight” features is a master
class on how beauty and strength can and should work
together. Westend lives up to its Reno Mark accreditation
by keeping current with industry standards — such as
those represented in the Invisia product line — and also by
looking for value-added opportunities that will position the
company to better serve its customers. A new addition
to Westend’s accessible living renovation program comes
in the form of Roger Gervais, a certified and insured
independent consultant who has been working with
adults with disabilities in Ottawa for the past 20 years. As Eastern Ontario’s only certified aging-in-place
specialist, Gervais has seen first-hand the beneficial effects
of barrier-free living. “It’s a cultural shift away from thinking
that it’s just for seniors and the disabled,”he says. ATTRACTIVE
‘ACCESSIBLE LIVING’ RENO OPTIONS WITHIN EASY REACH
AT WESTEND BATH & KITCHEN The Invisia by HealthCraft
collection of bathroom safety fixtures is proudly designed

The grab ring around the stylish soap dish can easily
support a person’s full weight. INVISIA 10633056 Certified
independent accessibility consultant part of Westend Bath
and Kitchen’s team “It’s inclusive design for everyone at
all stages of life and ability.” Westend plans to bring
Gervais in as a consultant early in the design process for
customers seeking accessibility features in their bath and
kitchen renovation plans.
For Gervais, choosing barrier-free living simply makes good
sense. “If you’re going to be spending money on a kitchen
or bath reno,” Gervais says, “why not consider universal
design right from the outset? It will allow you to stay in
your home that much longer, and you won’t have the
additional expense down the road. “Westend Bath
and Kitchen already has experience in this area and is
fully appreciative of the benefits.
Brian Mallett is bringing best practices and credibility to the
business that I find are really good.

A renovation to the Hilliers’ ensuite bathroom resulted in a look even better than
originally planned.
While many buyers prefer homes that have already been
renovated to perfection, a lot of first time buyers are seeing
the advantage to buying a “fixer upper.” Westend Bath and
Kitchen was the renovation company of choice for young
couple Steven Hillier, 29, and his wife Amanda, 26. When
Steven and Amanda took possession of their 1981- built
two-storey house in Convent Glen, the main bathroom was
bright orange. They painted it blue, “a stop measure for
future attention.
” Four years after moving in, they decided it was time to
renovate both bathrooms, and went to Westend Bath and
Kitchen. They worked with young designer Sarah Stott to
do the job, who is also in her twenties. She felt they had
very similar design tastes, and although the Hilliers are
homeowners, Sarah felt she could relate to their future
goals. “We actually initially sat down with other companies
and didn’t have confidence in them,” says Steven. “When we
went to Westend, we were really impressed with Sarah and
the nonpressure atmosphere.
They were very transparent and knew that being
younger, our money really had to stretch. From there it
was a really seamless process. We went in once or twice
to pick out products, and emailed back and forth for
design.” Westend Bath and Kitchen is a one-stop shop for
their customers. “We strive to make each and every renovation as stressfree as possible,” says the designer. “I act as a first contact
for each of my clients, which creates a comfortable
environment for all parties.” “We were ecstatic with the
result,” says Steve, who works for a non-profit association. He
and his wife wanted everything to look clean and
spacious, with a “Zen” kind of theme. “We wanted to do the
two bathrooms because one of them was not functional at
all, and we learned later from Westend that the pipes were
rusty and if we’d used it we would have had leaks all over,”
he says. “It was pure luck we never used the ensuite. For the
main bathroom, the faucet had fallen apart on the shower.” The young couple hopes to have children in future, and
that was taken into account with the design. “Originally
when Sarah designed the bathroom, she had glass shower
doors,” he says. “We told her we wanted to be flexible for
future children, and she retained the spa-like feel in a more
childproof way. It still feels like a spa, but we have a rod
and a curtain so we can bend over and wash kids at bath
time.” The main bathroom was “a huge transformation,” says
designer Sarah Stott. “They wanted a bigger tub area and
more storage which resulted in a complete layout change
for the entire room. We took down a wall and made it a half
wall, capped in the same quartz material as the countertop.
This really opened up the space.” The designer enjoyed
the creativity and freedom to create the new layouts.
“Everything was very cohesive; we created a more functional
space without sacrificing the design.” “The original layout
of the main bathroom was cramped, inconvenient, and
the toilet was in the corner,” she says. “Colours were outdated. Now the room feels larger, everything flows very
nicely and of course, they have their dream bathing
area.” In the second bathroom — the ensuite — there
were unforeseen complications, she says, because the
original plumbing was not to code, and there was black
mould found.
“We also had to do a layout change to correct the
problems, but it ended up looking just as beautiful, if
not better than the original plan. If ever a scenario like
the Hilliers’ occurs, the customer is always informed
before further action is taken.” Steven said they were
delighted at how quickly Westend came up with a solution
to the plumbing problems. The young couple are extremely
pleased with their new bathrooms. Kitchen and bath renovations can be daunting, whether
you’re a newbie or an experienced do-ityourselfer. Either
way, Westend Bath and Kitchen offers a wide variety of
high-quality products and services to suit every taste and
budget. Visit them today at 1660 Woodward Dr., or for more
