Nursery
Welcome to Nursery
Your child will learn through a range of experiences and activities based on the Foundation
Stage Curriculum.
This is divided into seven areas of learning.
3 PRIME areas
Personal, Social and Emotional Development.

Communication and Language.

Physical Development
4 SPECIFIC areas
Literacy

Mathematics

Expressive Arts and Design

Understanding of the World
Although they are split into different areas all
are equally as important.
Personal, Social and
Emotional Development
In this area of development children are encouraged to be independent learners and to be
confident when working together in small
groups developing a positive sense of themselves and others.
At home you can help by encouraging your child
to eat, dress and undress and
tidy up with you. Also, by talking to them encouraging them
to talk about how they feel
about different things that
happen.
Communication and
Language
Communication and Language or Speaking and
Listening, is key to learning. The more they are
able to listen, the more they will learn and the
more they will be able to express themselves
and the better they will achieve.
Physical Development
This area focusses on movement both gross motor (large movements) and fine motor (small
movements). It also looks at how we keep
healthy and safe.
At home you can help letting your child do up
buttons, fitting jigsaws together or as simple as
taking them for a walk or going to the park.
Literacy
This area includes developing reading and writing
skills.
At Templars’ we follow the Read Write Inc
scheme. Children will not begin this until they are
ready which is usually around summer term.
Some skills the children need to have before we
begin are-to be able to listen carefully to sounds/noises
-recognize own name and begin to
write it
-Hold a pencil correctly and make
marks
Mathematical Development
In this area of learning we focus on numberssaying them and matching quantities to numerals.
Children will begin to discuss shape and size and
will become aware of shapes in the environment.
At home you can help your child by spotting numbers in the street, count everythingsteps to the garden, up stairs, how
many squares they see. Also by using
mathematical language for example
“that is too big.”
Understanding of the World
In this area we focus on similarities and differences of materials, people, patterns and change.
Through a range of activities children will learn
about their surroundings and the people that are
important to them and their lives.
They will also begin to experiment, predict and
problem solve during activities like cooking.
Expressive Arts and Design
Creativity!! This area looks at music, art, dance
and role play.
Children love to experiment with their creativity
and may get messy! The children are told to wear
aprons and will be reminded
however, the aprons do not
prevent them from getting
messy.
