Spring Term 2016 - Curriculum Summary
Class 5 – Mrs Carlin/Mrs Lavelle
Religion – The units followed are part of the Curriculum Strategy for schools in Archdiocese of
Birmingham. This term they will include:
- Parables and the sayings of Jesus: Children will gain a greater understanding of the Parables of
Jesus and explore the Kingdom of God through them.
- Lent: Within this children will consider the concept of temptation as they study the temptations
of Jesus.
- Holy Week: Children will learn to gain a greater knowledge and understanding of the last week of
Jesus’ life.
In addition children participate in daily class prayer and reflective time throughout the day.
English
The aim for English is to promote high standards of language and literacy by equipping pupils with a
strong command of the spoken and written word and to develop a love of literature through
widespread reading for pleasure.
Within English in year 5, lessons incorporate the following strands of the National Curriculum:
Spoken language, reading words, reading comprehension, spelling, handwriting/presentation, writing
composition (planning, drafting, writing, evaluating, editing) and vocabulary/grammar/punctuation.
During the spring term these strands will be applied through the following whole class teaching:
- Traditional North American tales.
- Classic performance poetry: The Highwayman by Alfred Noyes.
- Classic Literature: The Secret Garden.
Mathematics
The aim for mathematics, in the new 2014 National Curriculum, is to ensure all pupils become
fluent in the fundamentals of maths, to reason mathematically and finally solve mathematical
problems.
Within mathematics in year 5, lessons incorporate the following strands of the National Curriculum
across a term:
- Number and place value
- Addition and subtraction
- Multiplication and division
- Fractions, decimals and percentages
- Measurement
- Geometry: Properties of shapes
- Geometry: Position and direction
- Statistics
Science:
The children will be continuing to learn about everyday materials and reversible changes. Then they
will move on to explore forces all around us. Within this they will also apply various scientific
enquiry skills.
Creative Curriculum:
Within the creative curriculum we aim to apply skills through a variety of learning themes and
discrete skill building sessions. Themes and skill building sessions will include the following
subjects: history, geography, art, music and design and technology.
During this term year 5 will study North America, including a pop art project at the end of this
theme.
In addition we will start the term with a Design and Technology project of designing a healthy
school meal.
Modern Foreign Language:
In Year 5 we will continue to learn Spanish.
P.E.
Over the coming term the children will take part in striking and fielding games, e.g. cricket and
rounders, and invasion games in their PE lessons.
