New Blinds in Year 4 Classroom This week we focus on improvements to our building… As you may have noticed all classrooms are now benefitting from our new blue blinds which provide welcome shade from the sunshine as we move into spring and summer keeping classrooms cooler, preventing glare from the light on our screens, whiteboards and interactive teaching boards and providing a much more comfortable learning experience for all. Some of the children said that: On a scale of 1 to 10 I give them 10! I like them because they do not let light in like the other ones did and we can see things on the screen Comic Relief 2017 Again this year we are supporting the Comic Relief Charity. Children are invited to come in school wearing their uniform and either a red nose or something red for a suggested donation of a £1.00 if they wish to. All our computers and iPads are now moved on trolleys to classrooms when children need to work on them which has allowed the’ ICT room’ to become a Resource room for groups to work in and for music lessons. New parasols which provide welcome shade in the playground are on order thanks to a kind donation from FOSP and we are at present looking at plans to revamp our library area. Mr Hodgkins our site manager has been busy painting interior walls and cutting down overgrown plants and we are looking forward to getting our outer fencing and gardens ready for spring with the help of FOSP and our local community in the near future! All very exciting and making Stratford Primary School a great place to teach and to learn. Over the next few weeks all classes will be covering this in more detail and teaching about protective behaviours which is a practical approach to personal safety. Most of the work will be through our personal, social and health education sessions. The scheme we use is entitled 'Taking Care' and we currently use the Warwickshire programme designed by Ann Seal (WCC). The programme aims to give children age appropriate strategies for talking about their feelings and in particular their own personal safety and wellbeing. Stratford Primary School pupils already have a great sense of caring and demonstrate kindness every day to their fellow classmates. They are very supportive of each other when in learning or in play situations as demonstrated by our very successful nurturing activities with our Year 6 pupils and the Reception Buddies. We take as many opportunities as possible every day to focus on understanding what feelings mean as the children grow and develop. However a specific whole school focus on these areas allows us to reinforce the understanding, attitudes and skills needed both in class sessions and through assemblies – skills which we feel are important life skills not only for your child now but for the future. We will share the information via booklets sent home over the coming weeks so please do make opportunities to talk to your child about things they have been learning and discussing in their classes. Great for creative writing linked to history. Weekly Safety Question... Each week we give the children a quick ‘outside of school’ safety reminder in class assembly. We would be grateful if parents could help us at home by giving the same message. This week: Mrs Hoskin - Acting Headteacher Mens and Ladies Shirt Donations If you have any old or unwanted mens or ladies shirts, please could you kindly donate them to the school for the children to use during art lessons. Music Soiree Update Tickets are still available for the Music Soiree on Friday 24th March. Proceeds from the ticket sales will be split equally between our nominated Charity of the Year , Macmillan Cancer Research and Comic Relief. “Safety at home: If there is a serious emergency, what would you do?” Myths and Legends A selection of comments and misconceptions we sometimes hear. “My child is too young for homework, they should be out enjoying themselves!” Well set homework that engages the children, recaps on the days learning or really motivates them to ‘find out more’ is what we strive for. Clearly, setting homework which achieves these aims, when the teacher can’t be present, is a challenge. We do however do our very best and our teachers are regularly monitored to ensure that we don’t slip into tasks which do little to improve children’s progress.
