Short-course gravity racing
The 4X (four-cross) competitions are generally well suited for the more serious and skilled riders
as four participants need to negotiate the tracks at the same time. 4X races have turned out
to be quite challenging in recent years with Australian riders becoming more and more sophisticated and skilled.
Rocky Trail Entertainment has been organising 4X races with NSW Mountain Bike as part of the
ACT/NSW State Series & Championships since 2008. They are exciting races and fun events.
What is 4X?
4X races feature 3 qualification rounds where riders fight for points towards the elimination finals. The courses used are easily mistaken for BMX tracks, but the main difference is that 4X
tracks feature multiple line choices, which are great for lead changes and require tactical
thinking.
Race format
4X tracks are designed to test the 4 riders’ skill with bermed and unbermed corners, jumps
and in some cases rocks and logs. The events are run with 3 rounds leading to semi and finals
depending on numbers.
−
START: The racers start out of a gate and during the training runs every riders gets
plenty of time to familiarise themselves with the starting procedure (“riders ready”,
“watch the gate” – then you are started by a beeping sound, that is timed at random)
−
COURSE: The courses are short, very technical and usually between 250m and 400m
long.
−
RACING: Four racers compete on one courses at the same time; the tracks feature
multiple line choices.

QUALIFYING ROUNDS: All races are done in heats of 4 riders at a time with points up for
grabs in the qualifying rounds. No riders are eliminated, but the seeding system determines the rider constellations (if you win, you generally get “easier” runs – racing
against the bottom 2 finishers from other heats). Riders may be asked to ride with other classes during the first few rounds depending on numbers.
−
SEMI FINALS / FINALS: After the qualifying rounds, the points the riders collected determine the starting grids for the finals. Semi finals and finals are run in each category
separately.
