A n dr e ws The BEAT GOES ON! As we go into “season” all cylinders are on full throttle. The car transports are beginning to line up outside our gates. Our seasonal staff has arrived and are in the midst of their rigorous training programs, the weather is beginning to get a bit cooler and the Club Improvement Plan (CIP) is proceeding at a good pace. November Steve Irwin From the standpoint of the CIP, the Fazio II course is completed and the grass is in the growing stage. In second half of November, George Kervern, our outstanding Director of Course & Grounds will be in a better position to make his recommendation as to when the course should be opened for play. At the present time we are looking at mid-December - but as you know, the opening date remains subject to the vagaries of weather- temperature, sunlight, clouds and storms. George will keep us advised. In all cases we will not jeopardize the the course by rushing to open it prematurely. 2016 President’s Message 2 General Manager’s Message 3 Dining 4-5 Activities 5-7 Golf 8 Construction News 9 David Ross will describe on page 9 our status in respect to the Promenade, Ladies’ Card Room and Ladies’ Lobby Restroom – as well as our planning for the Spa, Tennis and Fitness building and recreational area. A major shout out is due to David. His skill, time commitment and seriousness of purpose have added greatly to our ability to move the CIP forward. He has been a great resource to the Club for we are very appreciative. Calendar 10 & 11 S.A.W.G.A. 12 Tennis 13 As of this writing The Grille at Lakeside has been open for about 10 days. Since the “soft opening” suggestions have been provided by diners primarily with respect to the menu, service and the “feel” of the Grille. One consistent comment is that the food which has been served is excellent. Management is working diligently to improve service - which seems to be progressing nicely and to modify menu items to include less complicated food offerings like pizza, pasta, hot dogs (which was always the plan) and to work on the casual style of the experience. We are confident that as Management works through the opening issues, St. Andrews will have a high quality, casual dining experience of which we will all be proud. Events Photos 14 Fitness 16 Spa 17 Bridge 18 Welcome New Members 18 When Hurricane Matthew moved to the east and north, we dodged a HUGE bullet! We sustained minor damage and suffered minor inconveniences. This could have been a major issue for the Club and community. Nutrition 19 Catering 19 As you are no doubt aware, Hurricane Matthew caused substantial damage to the island of Haiti. As you may also know, many of our employees are Haitian and have various family members living there who are in need. About two years ago the Board of Governors established an Employee Emergency Fund which is funded annually with $25,000. This fund is utilized to assist those of our employees who find themselves in extreme financial distress and personal need. The Board has endorsed a proposal of the Employee Emergency Fund committee to provide a total of approximately $11,850 to fund travel and related costs of 10 of our affected employees enabling them to return to Haiti to assist family members there. We can be proud of our policy of protecting members of the St. Andrews family. This effort is being made in conjunction with Ron Gallatin and his sponsored charity HOT - who has prior experience in dealing with similar issues in Haiti. On the business side, I am happy to report that 51 homes closed through October 31. Last year we had 55 homes sold – a St. Andrews record. I can also report that we remain positive to our budget. In an effort to provide continuity between Club and leadership changes we have established the Past President’s Advisory Committee (P-PAC). The purpose of P-PAC is to reduce the duplication of effort and provide information about Club programs which may have been applied in the past and to otherwise take advantage of the experience from our past leaders. I know that both members and the professional staff look forward to reopening the Ladies’ Card Room, Lobby Restrooms and the Promenade Room this month. Craig D. Martin, CCM, In addition to hiring many local employees this year we also have Chief Operating Officer welcomed many returning and new international staff members to the and General Manager professional team. As always, they are bright, young and eager to learn the finer points of hospitality in a country club environment. Training is going well and includes role playing and classroom work followed up by rigorous testing. We ask that you assist us in our training by remembering that new employees often require some time to consistently deliver the service excellence that is our standard. Your patience and understanding is very much appreciated. The Grille at Lakeside promises to continue being the casual, family friendly favorite as it has been in the past. Your feedback and participation in the reopening of this restaurant has been very helpful in providing us with specific details about the dining experience you and your families prefer. We know that by working together, The Grille at Lakeside will exceed expectations and will set a new standard for country club casual dining. We anticipate another very busy season and look forward to seeing you, your family and friends enjoying the Club. As a reminder, Guest Passes can be requested at the Front Desk or online by logging in to our private member website at www.standrewscc.com. In order to ensure your guests have a memorable experience at the Club, please make sure they are aware of our Guest Use Rules and Dress Codes. This information is available on our website and at the Front Desk for your convenience. In closing, welcome to the 2016-2017 season at St. Andrews Country Club! The entire professional staff is committed to delivering on our promise to meet and exceed your expectations at every opportunity. Sincerely, Craig D. Martin, C.C.M. Chief Operating Officer & General Manager St. Andrews Style • November 2016 3 Dining It is with great excitement that I join the St. Andrews Country Club Management team. I feel very fortunate to be working with such an incredible team of dedicated professionals. During my first few weeks at the Club I have had the pleasure to meet many members who have graciously extended a warm welcome. Thank you all for such gracious hospitality. I feel very privileged to be part of the St. Andrews family. Rick Dente Assistant General Manager Having worked in the Club Industry for the past 15 years at various clubs across the U.S., I look forward to working with my team members and supporting them in providing you with a first class experience every time you visit the Club. I am excited to be working on various programming concepts and the latest club trends so that we continue to be the best and provide the best to all of you in every aspect of the club experience. Thank you again for all the smiles, handshakes and warm greetings. I look forward to seeing you at the club. Best regards, Rick Dente In December, the Gallery will host its first four-course Wine Dinner on Saturday, December 10. Our table-side presentation of food and wine will enhance your dining experience in the private Vine Room. Waiters dressed in white shirts and aprons will delight our members in the pouring, stirring, shaking, cracking and, of course, lighting food on fire right at the table. On Thursday, December 15 enjoy our first Dinner Under the Stars with live entertainment at Café Blue, and on Thursday, January 19 we will host our first, and always highly anticipated, Herb Garden Dinner. Federica Davis Director of Club Operations We are looking forward to the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday and we encourage everyone to make reservations as soon as possible. Please remember to review the dress codes for these events in your social calendar, and remind any guests that you are inviting. If you do not plan to join us for this holiday, please stop by and pick up a Take-Out Order form at the Front Desk or online under the “Dining” section. It would be our pleasure to help you with the cooking! Our new international staff has arrived and are currently undergoing training; we are seeing their performance accelerate along our expected learning curve. It typically takes around three/four weeks for their skill level to catch up; our returners group are doing a fine job of helping their peers adjust to the high expectations of St. Andrews standards. We teach our food & beverage employees through aassessments, quizzes, synced annotations and manuals to enable effective learning. They enjoy creative flexibility through a robust set of built-in and role-paly interactive elements. We allow the newly hired employees some latitude in setting the pace of learning new tasks, particularly as the training is provided by numerous employees who must perform their duties as well as train the new hires. In a busy, hectic environment, this is a huge challenge for all to overcome. As we measure their progress, the process builds the newly hired employee’s confidence through affirmation of their accomplishments. The Fazio II golf course is growing in beautifully. The golf course remains on budget and in fact that budget even allows for the addition of a significant water feature, visible from the clubhouse and Lakeside, framing the short game practice area and wrapping the west side of the Golf Performance Center. What a bonus! face lift of the main lobby, an expanded Tennis Shop, a significantly expanded breakfast / bagel lounge, an enhanced outdoor patio experience, renovated and expanded Men’s and Women’s lockers and changing areas plus the addition of dedicated Yoga and Pilates Studios, a dedicated Spinning Room and expanded workout and equipment areas on the second floor. All in all, life is good here at St. Andrews and our capital programs are on solid footing. Thank you all for you support and patience. Yours, David Ross, Chair Construction Committee The Turn, our new beverage and snack center, located on the east side of the Golf Performance Center is moving along and replaces the deteriorating beverage center opposite the starter. The Turn will be manned and offer sandwiches, hot dogs, salad and fruit cups, fruit and candy along with your favorite beverages. The area will be screened with a flat screen TV and comfortable tables and chairs. So whether you’re looking to take a break from the range, fuel up for your round of golf or take a break for a snack between nines, The Turn will now be at your service! This technique, used many centuries ago by Chinese, Egyptians and Native Americans has a history of spiritual and therapeutic healing. Susan, LMT The experience is an instant inner magnetic connection to rock; basalt lava stones. These smooth hot basalt lava stones contain calcium, iron and magnesium; minerals that are known to help balance energy within the body. A Soothing Stone Massage brings relief to tense muscles, sore joints, stressed emotions and a weary spirit.
