to support our local Hospital and Family Health Team.
Our next fund raising event will be a Soup & Sandwich Luncheon in April.

In October Mike Baker, Chief
Executive Officer of the Englehart
and District Hospital, was invited
to a Luncheon at the Pioneer
Club to share a bit of his personal
history and information about the
Hospital. The luncheon was well
attended and Mike was able to
enjoy a question and answer
period following his speech. He
explained how the funding for
both the Hospital and the Family
Health Team remains a challenge,
however the generosity of the
citizens of Englehart and
surrounding area is amazing. Each
year the community comes
together to raise funds used to
purchase much needed medical
equipment.
Let us know what you think.
February 2014 Edition
The Englehart & District Chamber of Commerce recently donated
$2,000.00 to the Englehart & District Hospital’s Recruitment and
Retention efforts. The Chamber of Commerce raised this money
during the Unveiling of Christmas in November. Above Beryl
Poulin is shown with Mike Baker, Chief Executive Officer.
Recently the Hospital and Family Health Team have recruited 2
new physicians to the area, Dr. Anahid Aminian and Dr. Eugene
van Onselen and efforts are ongoing to recruit 2 more.

Chief Executive Officer Outlook-Mike Baker
I would like to start off this issue of
the newsletter by acknowledging
the passing, the lives and many
contributions of two great men,
two great physicians who have
served people in our area for many
years. Dr. Michael King passed away
on January 23 in Kingston at the age
of 85 years. Dr. King was married
to his wife Joan for 60 years. Dr.
King began his medical career in
Englehart in 1956 and served as
general practitioner, surgeon and
obstetrician in Englehart until he
retired in 1995. Dr. King’s
commitment to this community
surpassed the typical in that he was
an active member in the curling club
and a Rotarian. Both Mike and Joan
have made tremendous
contributions to Englehart and area
over their 57 years here. We would
like to express our condolences to
Joan and family.
On January 20, Dr. P.J. Pace passed
away near Englehart in a motor
vehicle accident. Dr. Pace was the
principal obstetrician for the
Timiskaming District and delivered
many, if not all, of the babies from
the Englehart & District area.
Also an individual who was
dedicated to the people of this
area, Dr. Pace was instrumental
in the Cat Scan project and the
associated fund raising efforts. PJ’s
boisterous laughter will be sorely
missed.
On a positive note, Englehart and
District Hospital and the
Englehart & District Family Health
Team are welcoming two new
physicians, Dr. Anahid Aminian
and Dr. Eugene van Onselen. By
mid April, we should have 4
physicians working in the
Emergency Department and 4
physicians working appointments
at the Family Health Team. We
continue to bring in Locum
physicians to supplement our
current complement and to
recruit more full time physicians
to fill out our complement of 6
physicians.
In January, the Hospital received
funding from the North East
Local Health Integration Network
(NE LHIN) to complete a detailed
feasibility study for an Integrated
Health Care Program. The
program will look at many
services provided in Englehart to
determine if existing services
should be restructured or
enhanced, but principally, the
project will look at the feasibility
of building a new facility to house
long term care, assisted living and
retirement residence. A further
opportunity will be to review
district service gaps with an eye
to locate these services to the
facility, services such as mental
health, rehabilitation, assess and
restore and respite and palliative
care. The study will review
funding and governance
structures that would be
appropriate given the service
basket that is decided upon. If
the project proves feasible, the
next step would be to approach
government sources for approval
to proceed with building the new
structure.
Also, great news for the patients
of the area is that on February 6,
2014, the Board of Directors
approved the rent to own
contract of a Toshiba Ultrasound
Echo Cardiograph machine. The
machine is leading edge
technology in the Ultrasound
world.
In summary, we are all working
hard to deliver top quality care
for the residents of the area by
increasing health care provider
resources, as well as technology
for diagnosing your health care
needs because “Together We
Care”.

Health Information
It is with great pride and pleasure that I write my first article for the Englehart & District Hospital newsletter.
Keeping hands clean is one of the most important things EVERYONE can do to stop the spread of germs
and stay healthy.
The DI Department has been a beehive of activity since the reintroduction of full-time ultrasound services in September of 2013. We started with
abdominal ultrasounds, followed by echocardiograms, pelvic, small parts, venous and finally carotid ultrasounds. Within the next few months, we will
be able to provide full time obstetrical ultrasound service.
WHEN ? * When you enter the hospital *Before, during, and after preparing food * Before eating food * Before and after
caring for someone who is sick * Before and after treating a cut or wound * After using the toilet * After changing diapers
or cleaning up a child who has used the toilet * After blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing * After touching an animal,
animal feed, or animal waste * After handling pet food or pet treats * After touching garbage * Before you leave the hospital.
The response from the medical community to the availability of these services has been remarkable. I don’t think a week goes by that we don’t hear
“how did we ever function without this service”! It is very gratifying to know that our services are appreciated and that we are able to contribute to
the care and well-being of our patients.
HOW? * Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold), turn off the tap, and apply soap. * Lather your hands by rubbing them
together with the soap. Be sure to lather the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails. * Scrub your hands for at least 20
seconds. Need a timer? Hum the “Happy Birthday” song from beginning to end twice. * Rinse your hands well under clean, running water. * Dry
your hands using a clean towel or air dry them.
OR * How to use hand sanitizers* Apply the product to the palm of one hand (read the label to learn the correct amount) * Rub your hands
together * Rub the product over all surfaces of your hands and fingers until your hands are dry. * Remember total time product should be on
your hands from start to finish is at least 15 seconds. For more information visit the cdc.gov/handwashing
Welcome to Melanie Davis
Welcome to Kelly Hunter
Englehart and District Hospital is pleased to
introduce Kelly (Bond) Hunter who will be joining
our team as the new Nurse Manager. Kelly is a local
resident returning to the community after being away
for 16 years. She is excited with this new challenge
and looks forward to serving the Englehart
Community.
Cheryl Lawton will be returning to the Resource Nurse position while An Weiler will
continue as the Integrated Director of Nursing for both the Englehart and District and
Kirkland and District Hospitals. Both An and Kelly would like to extend their appreciation for all Cheryl’s hard work. There have been many new faces join the team
and we look forward to working together serving the residents of our community.
The Englehart and District
Hospital has also
welcomed Melanie Davis
to the team. Melanie is the
new Integrated Director of
Finance for the Englehart
and Kirkland and District
Hospitals. She has been a
Certified General
Accountant since 2003 and graduated from
Laurentian University with an Honours Bachelor of
Commerce degree. Melanie was the Finance Manager at the District of Timiskming Social Services
Administration Board for two years and has worked
in increasingly responsible positions in the forestry
and mining sectors over the past eight years.
Along with the increase in ultrasound volumes, we have seen an increase in patient volumes in Radiology including x-rays, bone density studies, Holter
monitor studies, ECG’s and blood pressure studies.
From Monday to Friday, we have one Radiology Technologist and one Ultrasound Technologist on staff. As well, we provide Radiology on call service
nights, weekends and statutory holidays. Needless to say, the days go by very fast for Janik and myself. If we don’t answer the phone, please leave a
message and we will return your call as soon as possible!
One change that you will notice in the very near future regards the drop-off location of outpatient DI registration and patient requisitions. A mail slot
has been installed in the DI door. Once the device is ready to catch these forms on the inside of the door we will have patients switch the drop off
location of their forms to this new location. This change will improve our efficiency by reducing the time it takes to retrieve our patients’ forms and
process them.
Our Co-op student Alyssa Baker, from Englehart High School, has been with us since September for approximately 2 hours every day and will finish her
rotation at the end of January. She is a quick learner and is willing to help out where ever and whenever she can. We have thoroughly enjoyed having
Alyssa with us and wish her all the best in her chosen field of study.
I would like to thank everyone for their on-going support as we work to be able to provide the best service possible for our patients.
There is a saying in the medical field- ‘The only thing constant in medicine is change” – and no truer words were ever spoken for this department in the
past several months and in the months to come.
Cindy MacKinnon, DI Supervisor.

Physiotherapy Department Update
The Physiotherapy Department is
experiencing higher than normal
demands. They have received 48 new
referrals for outpatients which is double
their normal amount . This has created a
very large waiting list. They apologize
and advise those waiting to be seen to
call the physiotherapy department to
inform them of any change in the
referred condition.

Ellen MacPherson and Ingrid Corley both received their 40 year pins in December 2013 at the Englehart & District Hospital Awards
Banquet. Ellen and Ingrid have both had outstanding careers as Registered Nurses, and were instrumental in establishing the Foot Care
Clinic which is now located in the Family Health Team. Ingrid and Ellen both retired in December of 2013 as well and in his speech at the
