Spring 2014 - English Lakes Hotels

news
Welcome to
+1 news
It is always a privilege to be involved with
the annual English Lakes awards lunch
where we honour those who have excelled
in service across every department within
our family of hotels. Congratulations to
Vicky Cruse who scooped the prestigious
MRWB Award for her amazing contribution
over the previous 12 months.
There has been much activity in the
waters of Windermere despite near
freezing temperatures. In their mammoth
efforts for Sports Relief we welcomed
both Davina McCall during her Beyond
Breaking Point challenge and Blue Peter’s
Radzi Chinyanganya. We also hosted
competitors from around the globe in the
annual ChillSwim event where our very
own English Lakes team achieved success.
We are delighted to announce that all
five properties in the English Lakes family
have achieved Gold status in the Green
Tourism Business Scheme – through the
hard work and determination of our green
‘champions’ right across the group.
The MRWB Award Nominees
English Lakes Awards
On 21st March we celebrated the English Lakes awards with a beautiful three course lunch
at Waterhead attended by the Directors and a number of employees who had been
nominated for awards by their colleagues. There were seven hotly contested categories
including Team Member of the Year in F & B, Housekeeping, Front of House and Support
Staff, Chef of the Year and Unsung Hero.
The most prized title, the MRWB Memorial award is given to the team member who, by
their individual effort, has made the most significant contribution to the success of the
company in the previous twelve months. The award is given in memory of Michael R W Berry,
Chairman and Managing Director of the company between 1974 and his death in 2004.
The awards were presented by his wife, Jean Berry.
“... and out of twelve nominations for the MRWB Award, the winner is - Vicky Cruse, Wedding
and Events Manager at The Midland”. Vicky, a very popular winner, is responsible for the
ongoing success of The Midland’s wedding and function business which continues to show
significant growth year on year. However, in the last twelve months, she has also been
instrumental in organising the fabulous ‘Vintage by the Sea’ event as part of The Midland’s
80th birthday celebrations. This promoted the hotel both locally and nationally and attracted
over 7,000 people to Morecambe over that weekend alone.
Fun was had by all at the Wild Boar’s
Festival of Smoke - with an invitation to
guests and our community to participate
in a plethora of activities from charcoal
making to whisky tasting. So much more
than simply an inn!
Not forgetting our charitable involvement,
Waterhead used their specialism in coffee
roasting to help UK Coffee Week realise
their £100,000 target to provide some of
the poorest people in Tanzania with fresh
drinking water. the group we are also
helping to flush away poverty by twinning
our ladies and gents loos with toilets in
less privileged surroundings!

Swimming Success - Beyond Breaking Point!
We welcomed Davina McCall to Low Wood Bay in
February as part of her Beyond Breaking Point extreme
endurance challenge for Sport Relief. Swimming
across Windermere in life-threatening temperatures
made Davina face one of her biggest fears.
She admitted, “When I first started training for this
challenge, I cried every day for a fortnight. My body’s
not built for an endurance challenge of this scale and
I’m absolutely terrified of open water!”
Although the freezing water obviously did take its toll,
making onlookers concerned for her health, Davina
Davina faces her biggest fear
amazed us all by emerging from her hotel room and
getting back on her bike 90 minutes later and heading for Lancashire, earning her the admiration of
the nation.
Davina successfully completed the 500 miles from Edinburgh to London in seven days, running, cycling
and swimming her way to a rapturous reception at the finish line outside the Tate Modern on 14th
February. When the going got tough, as it did
frequently, Davina kept herself going by thinking
of the daily struggles of the women in Nairobi that
the money raised would help support - almost one
million pounds by the end of the challenge!
Congratulations Davina!

Blue Peter Challenge
Radzi and the Low Wood Watersports team
Another brave soul to tackle the extreme cold of Windermere recently in aid of Sport Relief was
Blue Peter presenter Radzi Chinyanganya who completed the swim across the lake on 25th
February. Radzi came to Low Wood Bay a couple of times before his challenge to practice in
the lake with the support of Low Wood Bay Watersports centre and professional open water
swimmer/trainer Colin Hill.
Chill Swim
We cheered on our own English Lakes team as they competed in the 2014 Chill Swim at the beginning of
February. The event has doubled in size since the inaugural event last year, attracting 570 competitors from all
over the world.
The Big Chill 2014
The swimmers, who are not allowed to wear wetsuits, raced over distances of 30, 50 and 450 metres, enduring
water temperatures below 5 degrees. Top level competitors included Estonian winter swimming endurance
world champion Henri Kaama and the head of the international Winter Swimming Association Mariia YrjoKoskinen. Our English Lakes team were rewarded for their bravery with the ‘Top Team in Cumbria’ title in the
Relay race.
Colin Hill, creator of Chillswim and who first established the Great North Swim several years earlier said,
“Winter swimming has really taken off in the UK in the last year, and we are proud to be at the forefront of this movement with our international Winter
Swimming Association Event. Winter swimming can seem like a very odd idea to the uninitiated, but the sense of wellbeing and exhilaration you get
when you have finished the swim is quite incredible. All your endorphins kick in. It is an amazing life-affirming experience”.
The Big Sleep
In 2013 I accepted a challenge to raise money for the Winter Warmth Fund by
sleeping on the shores of Stickle Tarn on a cold, snowy, February night.
It was a tough challenge but those involved knew we had achieved something in raising awareness
of the plight of some of our elderly Cumbrian neighbours who struggle in the winter months due
to rising fuel costs. With a belief that this should become an annual event and with growing support,
The Big Sleep field behind Low Wood Bay
‘The Big Sleep’ was born and on a Saturday in February 2014, on a hill behind Low Wood Bay Resort
Hotel, 167 brave souls slept out under a wintery night sky.
Waking up on a cold still morning, with the sun breaking the clouds that had rained on me during the
night I realised how glad I was to have a heated home to live in. However, I am more than willing to
experience one night of cold and discomfort to raise awareness of those that suffer a whole winter
that way.

Festival of Smoke
+1 Winners
The Wild Boar opened its doors on 16th March and extended a free invitation for all
to attend a celebration of smoke!
Lancaster House
Smoky Jo and Georgina, who run our smoking courses, were on hand to guide
us through the stages of smoking food. There were some amazing samples of
produce from our onsite smokehouse including wild boar sausage, salmon, steaks,
cheese and a few surprises!
Tim Bloomer, the master brewer from Fell Brewery, demonstrated the art of making
real ale, including our home brewed ales Mad Pig, Smoked Porter and Hog’s Head 54.
There was a smoked themed lunch menu served with Brewhouse beer bats and
a sumptuous dinner taster menu. After dinner, whisky tasting commenced with
Jamie Milne the UK Ambassador for Glenfiddich Whisky who showcased the best
whiskies from this famous distillery.
Fun for all was had in The Wild Boar woods with a family cuddly Wild Boar Hunt,
Swedish candle and charcoal making demonstrations and clay pigeon shooting.
Mike Hewitt
A function wanted to have fish and chips served in a
cone - as it was short notice and we did not have a
stock of cones, Mike went in his own time to source
them so that the guests would not be disappointed.
Nathan Fern
The day before the wedding fayre, Nathan was
setting the Dalton Suite for a wedding breakfast
set up. Rather than fold the napkins in the usual
fan, Nathan researched a variety of folds and put
different designs on each table. The brides and
grooms loved seeing the different options.
Slava Hatton
There was a guest retirement dinner in the Bowland
Suite. In his break Slava collected his I-Pod music
system and set it up prior to the guests arrival with
a suitable playlist. The music added to the ambience
and dining experience.
George Zammit
A guest who was in a hurry at breakfast requested
eggs hollandaise for his breakfast and George
prepped the sauce from scratch in time. Well done!
Kerry Fenton
On checking the next weekend’s special offer
guests, Kerry noticed that one guest who was
having the Prosecco and chocolates was Gluten
free and so she organised a box of special gluten
free chocolates.
Simon Hodgson and Adam Holt
A young guest was jealous of other guests drinking
cocktails out of a fancy glass so Adam and Simon
made him a non-alcoholic fruity cocktail in a fancy
glass with straws and fruit on the rim. The little boy
was over the moon with this!
6 Course, 6 Nations Dinner
In February The Wild Boar welcomed whisky and rugby enthusiasts to our 6 Nations
Charity Dinner, in association with the UK’s rugby charity, Wooden Spoon. After
dinner our guest speaker was Ian Robertson ex-Scottish rugby international and the
BBC’s rugby union correspondent.
Wooden Spoon was founded in 1983 and has since then been making a difference
to the lives of disadvantaged children and young people. To date it has granted over
£20 million to very worthy projects.
Guests were treated
to a delightful six
course, 6 nations
themed menu which
was created in classic
Wild Boar style!!
Each course was
selected from one
of the 6 nations and
a whisky from that
nation was served
with the dish. Dr
Andrew
Forrester,
the UK Ambassador (from left to right) Anthony Sutcliffe, Wild Boar Operations Manager, Ian
Robertson and John Cunningham, Wooden Spoon Cumbria Chairma
for Balvenie whisky
gave a talk on each whisky and the evening concluded with a raffle and an auction
of notable rugby memorabilia which helped raise the total on the night to over
£7,000. The evening was a fantastic occasion bringing together food, rugby, whisky
and helping to raise the awareness of a great charity.

Marie De’Giorgio & Sarah Mason
Chef’s little boy celebrated his first birthday on
Mother’s Day but his Dad had to work as we were
very busy. However his family came for lunch with
us. As a surprise, Sarah & Marie a surprise made a
beautifully decorated cake so that Michael could
present it to him while the family was having
lunch.
Poppy Nelson- Brown
A guest had spilt gravy on his jacket; Poppy
arranged dry cleaning & delivered the jacket to the
man’s house in her own time.
Tracy Mulligan, Dana Hrabankova,
Joanna Bednarek
Tracey, Dana and Joanna all took dirty washing
home while our washing machine wasn’t broke
down.
Toilet Twinning...
You may have noticed photographs of toilets from around the world
(16 in total) hung in our hotel toilet facilities.
Dan, from Low Wood Bay Watersports brought this fantastic Tearfund
and Cord initiative to our attention. The concept is simple - for a
one-off specified donation which pays for the construction of a toilet
in a developing country, you receive a photograph of your twinned
toilet to display in the comfortable
surroundings of your western loo.
Much more than that, you have the
knowledge that a simple gift has
done something to help the problem
of the 2.6 billion people world wide,
that’s 40% of the earth’s population,
that do not have access to
somewhere safe, private or hygienic
to go to the toilet.

donation has helped to build
Obviously the human and economic
impact of statistics like these is huge.
Every 20 seconds a child dies from
diarrheal diseases and 60% of all rural
diseases are caused by poor hygiene
and sanitation. Toilettwinning.org
says, “Your twinned toilet is helping
to flush away poverty!”
Helping UK Coffee Week Reach £100,000 Target
Waterhead is getting quite a reputation for serving the freshest coffee in the Lake District, roasting our coffee beans right here on site. What better way
to celebrate our quest for the perfect cuppa than getting involved in UK Coffee Week in April? Coffee providers from all over the country put on special
events to raise money for the elected charity, which this year was Project Waterfall. It’s great to report that the project is targeted to reach £100,000 to
deliver safe drinking water to the remote community in the Mbulu District of coffee-growing Tanzania. During Coffee Week Waterhead had Tanzanian
coffee as well as creating some fantastic examples of Latte Art by our very own barristers Attila and Tamas.
Waterhead also featured demonstrations of our coffee roasting, and team members chatted to guests interested in the process. A proportion of every
coffee sold went towards the Project Waterfall target.

Cumbria and Lancashire.
By working together with our teams, customers, suppliers and

An incredible road to recovery!
In March 2011 Joe Beaumont had
a serious climbing accident which
resulted in multiple injuries down one
side of his body. To help Joe recover
his fitness, Low Wood Club assisted
with a complimentary membership
to help him recover and rehabilitate.
At first Joe could only use the pool
but since the frame was removed
from his leg he’s been in the gym
and the improvement is remarkable
- regularly cycling and using the
rowing machine. Joe has always got a
smile on his face and nothing seems
to get him down.
Joe Beaumont on his journey to recovery
Since his accident he has completed
many challenges and in 2013 he
cycled 600 miles in order to raise
money for the mountain rescue team
to whom he owes so much.
In June this year he plans to repeat the cycle from Kendal to Fort William in
Scotland but this time he will add the challenge of climbing Tower Ridge and
conquering the summit of Ben Nevis. More information on Joe’s story can be
found at joebeaumont.com and if you ever see him in the gym he will always be
happy to chat and tell you more.

Debbi Fralick and Alar Allik
Debbi and Alar went an extra mile to enhance the
bank holidays for children and made a new Sam’s
board from scratch. Debbi also created little standup pictures of animals that live around here, with
interesting facts about them.
Low Wood Club & CDL
Following the assistance of the children from
Scotforth Church of England Primary School in
designing the Sam’s Menu at Lancaster House,
Cherrie Hargreaves, Guest Services Manager
enlisted their help once again. During school
holidays the hotel organises an activity room
where children who are staying at the hotel
can have some fun. Nine pupils from class 3,
Scotforth Church of England Primary School
came to Lancaster House to ‘road test’ the
activities. The children tried their hand at
Egg Decorating in the Easter themed room,
making Easter cards, playing Wii Sport Resort on the Nintendo Wii and chilling out
watching a DVD.
The initial feedback has been fantastic. After everyone had participated we sat down
together to listen to any other activity ideas they thought children of their age might
enjoy. Cherrie is now armed with some really great suggestions and is already
planning the next Sam’s Club activity room for the next half term holiday.
Thank you to Class 3 Scotforth Primary School for their help.

Introducing
the Wild Boar’s
Master of Malt
The Wild Boar has a range of over 100 whiskies to choose from
“I have been part of The Wild Boar family for almost 9 Years now and have recently been
affectionately dubbed ‘Master of Malt’. Having a real interest in whisky, it is my responsibility to
host our regular whisky nights and to write a monthly whisky blog for our guests, our Whisky
Club members and all those who have an interest in the amber liquid.
I’ve been interested in whisky for about the last twenty years, ever since a previous manager,
and fellow Scot, treated me to a glass of Bunnahabhain. I was hooked! Not that I was a stranger
to whisky as prior to that, I grew up in the town of Airdrie. Our house was half a mile from a
local distillery, so I was never far from the smell of malt! I guess you could say it’s in my veins!
The Wild Boar Whisky Club has been an inspiration to me and over the last few years we have
had some great tasting nights and hosted some of Scotland’s finest distillery ambassadors.
We currently have over 100 whiskies and I have enjoyed learning about each as I progress on
my own personal whisky journey.”
Look out for our ‘Malt of the Month’ blog starting in May.

“I was Marketing Assistant at English Lakes from 2003 to 2008, but my English
Lakes career actually began several years earlier in 1999 when I joined the team
at Low Wood Watersports Centre, spending a couple of years there before
moving to the group accounts team and subsequently marketing department.
Low Wood Watersports
Centre (continued)
“On leaving English Lakes, I became self-employed offering marketing,
administrative and bookkeeping services for many small local businesses and
trades. During this time I even joined the reception team at The Wild Boar briefly
- a place very close to my heart!
“Now I combine my passion and love for horses with a career in marketing
and fundraising at the local charity, The Thoroughbred Rehabilitation Centre.
Following re-training at the centre in North Lancashire, ex-racehorses, who may
otherwise face an uncertain future, are given the opportunity to lead appropriate
post-racing careers in loan
homes across the UK. My role
is demanding, challenging
and fulfilling - to promote
the work of the charity, the
versatility of the thoroughbred
ex-racehorse as a riding horse,
and to raise the essential funds
required to run the charity and
care for the 25 horses we have
at any time.
“I loved working for English
Lakes, it was a fantastic
opportunity to work alongside
such a lot of dedicated and
motivated people and learn so
much. It provided me with
invaluable experience, support
and development. I have a
great many very fond memories
of my time there.”

There remains controversy about the origins of Sticky Toffee Pudding. Many
people from Cumbria to Canada have claimed the original inspiration.
Low Wood was already enjoying a good reputation as an inn at the beginning of
the 19th century. A friend of the Briggs family, who toured the Lakes and stayed
at Low Wood in August 1820, had already advised them that the Low Wood food
was excellent, stressing that the puddings, particularly, should not be missed:
“We sat down to supper; and you will perhaps believe me, when I assure you that
we did honour to the Puddings. Indeed, Mr Harrison paid them an extraordinary
compliment, for he devoured
two of them. They were
certainly excellent …”
Sticky toffee pudding - so
good it deserves to be shared!
Radzi, the Blue Peter presenter, was at the
Watersports Centre 5 times prior to his open water
swim challenge for Sports Relief. Paul and Dan
always managed to offer him a safety boat for his
practice. Radzi was very thankful to them and their
efforts and wouldn’t have been able to train safely
without their assistance.

A lady guest after check in came and asked at reception
if we had a magnifying mirror that she could use.
Alina brought one in from home for the guest for the

Ilse Miessner
Ilse was on a late shift when an elderly man and
his wife came to reception and said their car had
broken down and asked if his wife could wait at

Emma and Lina both spent nearly an hour trying to
pursue a runaway dog for a guest that had run into

they managed to capture Millie and return her safely

Miroslav Likus
Miroslav was asked to host a smoking tutorial for
a group of students from Kendal college. He went
away and brushed up on his study so that he was
able to accurately get the information across in a
professional way.
Rafal Morzecki
Rafal was asked how the homemade muesli was
made, and so he typed out the special recipe so that
the guest could take it home and enjoy a little bit of
culinary magic at home.
Adam Bujok
Adam printed some walks of the area out specific
for Ambleside as that’s where the guest wanted to
