Welcoming Statement
St. Andrew is a faith community
baptized into one body, which honors and
celebrates diversity. We welcome and
include persons of every color, language,
ethnicity, origin, ability, sexual orientation,
gender expression, marital status,
and life situation.
Parish Mission
La Parroquia de San Andrés es una
comunidad bautizada en un cuerpo, que honra y
celebra la diversidad. Acogemos a las personas
de todos colores, lenguas, razas, origenes, habilidades, orientación sexual, estado civil y estilos de
vida.
St. Andrew Parish recognizes that, as Jesus Christ
was sent by God to “bring the good news to the poor,
to proclaim liberty to captives, and to the blind new
sight, to set the downtrodden free, to proclaim the
Lord’s year of favor,” (Luke 4:18)
....so it is the mission of St. Andrew Parish to be a
visible presence of Christ in our culturally and racially
diverse neighborhood, rooted in the Gospel and nurtured by liturgy, prayer, and the community of faith.
As such we commit ourselves to work with the poor,
the powerless, and the oppressed for the liberation of
all; to seek justice, compassion, and peace in our lives,
community, and world; and to proclaim and celebrate
God’s unconditional love for all.

“Care of the Earth”
Today’s Liturgy
By Deacon Owen Cummings
In each year of the lectionary cycle,
the second Sunday of Lent has as its
gospel reading the account of the
Transfiguration of the Lord. Our year is
Year I, the Year of St. Matthew. The glorious image of the transfigured Christ
may seem at first glance out of place
during this penitential season, but we
need to recall that Lent has another
theological focus as well.
The key to understanding the place
of the Transfiguration narrative as we
make our way through Lent lies in the
recognition that central to the meaning of this holy season is preparation
for baptism and for the renewal of
our baptismal promises. The Christ of
Transfiguration stands not only as an
epiphany of the Christ of Resurrection
and Parousia, but also as an icon of the
baptized or about-to-be-baptized Christian. How is that?
Jesus is transfigured before Peter,
James and John; the baptized Christian
is transfigured into Christ, sharing the
life of the Trinity through baptism.
Jesus converses with Moses and Elijah.
These figures symbolize the Torah and
the Prophets of the Hebrew Scriptures.
Moses led the people of Israel out of
oppression for forty years in the wilderness before entering the Promised
Land, while Elijah, on the strength of
food provided by an angel of the Lord,
traveled for forty days and forty nights
to Horeb, the mountain of the Lord [1
Kings 19: 7-8]. The Christian-to-be is
traveling for forty days to the Promised
Land of Baptism, is moving towards the
mountain of encounter with God over
forty days and nights.
The voice of Abba/Father says of the
Beloved Son, "This is my beloved Son
on whom my favor rests." The voice of
Abba/Father will say at the Easter Vigil
to the neophytes and to us all, "These
are my beloved daughters and sons in
my beloved Son." The transfiguration
gospel of the second Sunday of Lent anticipates our Easter transfiguration.

safety bills are being considered
by the Oregon Legislature. Lives
will be saved if these bills become
law. We’ll learn about these bills
from legislative experts, and
professional lobbyists will explain
how to effectively advocate for
these bills. We’ll receive detailed
information on how to contact
our legislators. Each of us can Act
Locally to make Oregon a safer
place to live.

St. Vincent de Paul / St. Andrew Emergency Services
Only Jesus
“This is my beloved son on whom my favor rests.
Listen to him.”
It’s that simple: listen to him and no one else in history. The disciples fall forward on their faces, flat on
the ground, overcome with fear and awe, out of time,
in the presence of the Holy. Then Jesus comes forward
again into their lives and ordinary time and lays a hand
on them saying: “Get up, do not be afraid.” These few
words are the essence of resurrection life: Arise and
live without fear of death, the end of time, hate, injustice, suffering. We
have been given the life of the Son of Man to sustain us in this history that
serves God’s time and promises.
When they look up again, they see only Jesus. That’s the core, the heart
of all history and of all life, only Jesus and what he brings into this world.
On the way down the mountain Jesus commands them, in the same vein as
Abram was commanded to leave his past behind, “Do not tell anyone of the
vision until the Son of Man rises from the dead,” that is, until the seemingly impossible becomes reality.
This account is an intimation of Easter five weeks from now. We are
weak-hearted and basically timid and fearful folk and oftentimes, even by
the second week of Lent, we’re ready to give up. This Sunday is for courage, blessing, encouragement, and a moment of prayer, an experience of
the glory of the Lord, of revelation for all us faint-hearted folk. It is for us
when we act like Peter, wanting it easy, wanting to stay with glory, wanting
to stay with our limited and oftentimes off-base assumptions about what
is going on. It is a time for God to interrupt and once again tell us: “This is
my beloved on whom my favor rests—the favor of grace, spirit, justice, care
for the poor, obedience. Listen to him and not to anyone else.”
Megan McKenna, Lent: Reflections and Stories. An author, theologian,
storyteller, and lecturer, she has taught at Fordham Univeristy and the
Washington Theological Union. (From Give Us This Day, March 2017)
Accomplishment: Emergency Services acknowledges the steady commitment of our Pantry Managers who contribute their time and energy four
hours each week listening to and assisting our clients. Thank you!

Sacred Seeing, Scripture, and Faith Sharing:
In this Lenten time of Purification and Enlightenment
that the baptized share with the elect, this 60-minute
session on March 26th, 11 - Noon, offers a contemplative encounter with art and Scripture. You will be
guided through a series of exercises—some in silence,
some in conversation, some in tandem with the sacred
text—all leading to faith-sharing. Come and see.
Lorie Simmons is a student in the Master of Arts in
Pastoral Ministry program at the University of Portland. This session is part of the final stage of that program—the practicum. It is based both on her studies
in theology and ministry and her graduate work in art
history before that. She is an editor at Liturgy Training
Publications in Chicago.
Liturgy
● PURPOSEFUL SILENCE: The General Instruction of the
Roman Missal calls for silence at various times during
the liturgy. This should be a purposeful time of silent
reflection, when we focus on the readings or another
action of the liturgy. It should not be an uncomfortable
time of wondering why nothing is happening. We need
to be active during those times of silence. They are opportunities for our interior reflection and prayer. Let us
not waste them.
● What does “Triduum” mean?: It comes from Latin
roots that mean, essentially, “the three days” or “period of three days” (tri- = three, -dies = days). This is
the liturgical season that follows Lent and precedes the
Easter season. April 13-15, Mark your calendar now and
plan to attend.
