Healthy Lifestyles Training In February, 2009, sur la rue, inc. was selected to participate in a pilot program through a Ramsey County Physical Activity and Nutrition Training Project. Diana, Residential Supervisor at Powers and Katie, Program Director spent 3 days at a “Train the Trainer” workshop to learn the Healthy Lifestyles curriculum. Healthy Lifestyles for People with Disabilities was developed by the Oregon Health and Science University. Ramsey County received a federal grant and contracted with the Institute on Community Integration at the University of Minnesota to do pilot research on the curriculum. After obtaining consent of guardians and medical clearance, consumers living at Laurie Road, Birchwood and Powers completed intake questionnaires. On March 26, sur la rue, inc. launched it’s first “Healthy Lifestyles” workshop. The workshops met for 3 hours on Thursday nights through April for a total of 18 hours of training. Participants will complete questionnaires at key times of the process and will also participate in a monthly support group for the next 6 months. Participants decided on “group ground rules,” shared a nutritious meal and completed units about emotional, physical and social health as well as a unit on meaningful activity. Additionally, GREAT QUOTES “Go for the gusto” “I am no longer a working woman, I am a party animal” “When it comes to cravings, I have to reign myself in” “I’m nuts for nuts, like the cocoa nuts” “Drinking water is only one of my rules” “It’s all or something” people took time to identify values and set personal goals. The Healthy Lifestyles curriculum is also about nutrition, illness prevention and working with healthcare providers. The approach is holistic and consumer directed. Spring, 2009 Welcome!
