Join BCSS in honoring 20 years of service
to Berks County.
The early days of BCSS were fueled by the passion of a few women in Berks who chose to offer a hand of friendship to women diagnosed with
breast cancer. Fast – forward to 2014: BCSS impacts hundreds of lives each year.
BCSS is proud of what has been accomplished for our community: an independent voice for families coping with breast cancer . On behalf of
the Board of Directors we thank each and every one of you for your belief and support in our endeavors during the last 20 years. You made it
happen.
We have been planning lots of activities to showcase our important programs and to get you involved in our mission. We look forward to seeing
you all at our 20th Anniversary events.
Check our website (bcssberks.org) as we finalize the details of our 2014 BCSS Celebration!
I n t h e w o r d s o f a s u r v i v o r. . . . .
“I truly do appreciate all BCSS has done to assure me I am not alone
and that so many compassionate people want to be tangible
encouragement. BCSS provides a safe place in this confusing
frightening cancer journey. It has given me new friends who have
the ability and passion to educate each other, support each other and
laugh together. I have my support group
of twelve of the bravest women!
We call ourselves the October
BCSS OVERCOMERS.”

It is with great pleasure that I share with you this special year at BCSS. 20
years, a few thousand breast cancer survivors, hundreds of programs, laughter
and tears have filled the many days. BCSS has grown into a strong and
focused organization committed to delivering quality programs and services.
Forging partnerships with Reading Hospital and St. Joseph Medical Center
allows BCSS to become a vital link in helping people access the healthcare
they need. BCSS programs play an important role in the well being of families
as they cope with a diagnosis of breast cancer.
In this newsletter, youʼll read about Donna, an incredible lady who found comfort at BCSS. Her story
is a true testament to how the BCSS community creates a soft landing for those we serve.

I n t h e w o r d s o f a B C S S s u p p o r t e r. . .
“My mother was one of the founding members of BCSS, so it will always have a place near and dear to my heart.
Both of my sisters and many, many friends are all breast cancer survivors, and I have learned so much from their
strength and courage. I've also done 3 breast cancer walks to help fund research to f ind a cure.
The information and support that BCSS offers anyone dealing with breast cancer is invaluable, and I will always
be proud to champion their efforts."

Vo l u n t e e r s - t h e H e a r t o f B C SS
Be a part of our mission - volunteer. Serve on a committee. Or just join us for a few hours on a work project. You'll find it enjoyable and rewarding.
Volunteer opportunities:
Photography - do you like to take pictures? We always need photos of our events for the newsletter and Facebook.
Health Fairs - set up and provide info.
Helping with fundraisers - we always need people behind the scenes to help.
Community Awareness - representing BCSS in our community and beyond.
Sewing pillows for Comfort Bags - like to sew? We always need sewers and stuffers for the 600 pillows we create each year.
Marketing, non-profit experience, financial expertise? We need you.
Especially for survivors...
Speakers Bureau - survivors are needed to speak to organizations about BCSS, or about the survivor experience. Sometimes just a 5 minute talk is all
that is needed.
SupportLine volunteers - peer support for callers who ask for emotional support. Looking for survivors who can be available to return phone calls.
Support group facilitators - interested in helping other women on their breast cancer journey? BCSS needs survivors who are willing to lead groups.
"BCSS was so important to me when I was diagnosed - now I want to give back!"
