GOD’S CALL
In today’s scriptures we hear three instances of people receiving and responding to a call from God. These accounts follow the pattern of most
scriptural call narratives: a divine presence appears and speaks; the person
expresses fear or unworthiness, receives encouragement, and finally responds to God’s call. Today’s first reading shows an unworthy Isaiah responding to the Lord’s call, “Here I am; send me!” (Isaiah 6:8). In the
second reading Paul tells us that, even though he had persecuted the
church, he was called to be an apostle. In the Gospel, despite Simon Peter’s protest that he is a sinner, Jesus calls James, John, and Simon to follow him. They leave everything they have and follow Jesus—that is, they
become Jesus’ disciples. These scriptures can challenge us to take stock
of our lives. How do we experience Jesus’ call to discipleship in our
lives? How well and faithfully are we responding?
EL LLAMADO DE DIOS
En las lecturas de hoy podemos oír tres ocasiones en que algunas personas reciben y responden a un llamado de Dios. Estos relatos siguen el patrón de la mayoría de los relatos de llamados: una presencia divina aparece y habla; la persona expresa temor o no ser digna, recibe aliento, y finalmente responde al llamado de Dios. La primer lectura de hoy muestra
a un indigno Isaías respondiendo al llamado de Dios: “Aquí estoy, Señor,
envíame” (Isaías 6:8). En la segunda lectura Pablo nos dice que, aunque
había perseguido a la Iglesia, fue llamado a ser apóstol. En el Evangelio, a
pesar de la protesta de Simón Pedro de que es pecador, Jesús llama a Santiago, a Juan y a Simón para que lo sigan. Dejan todo lo que poseen y siguen a Jesús — es decir, se convierten en discípulos de Jesús. Estas lecturas bíblicas desafían a evaluar nuestras vidas. ¿Cómo sentimos en nuestras vidas el llamado de Jesús a ser discípulos? ¿Estamos respondiendo
bien y con fidelidad?

Congratulations, Raymond Moon! Bishop Gerald Barnes has accepted Ray’s application to continue the three-year
deaconate formation. On Saturday, February 6, 2010 Ray and other candidates will be attending the Rite of Candidacy
for Holy Orders officiated by Auxiliary Bishop Rutilio del Riego at Our Lady of the Rosary Cathedral. Here they will be
blessed as they continue their formation journey. May God bestow upon Ray and his wife Martha and family His most

On Sunday, February 14, 2010 during the 9:00 a.m. Spanish Mass and the 11:00 a.m. English Mass,
the Rite of Sending will be celebrated for the Catechumens in order to prepare for the Rite of Election
for children and adults. The Bishop will celebrate the Rite of Election on Friday, February 19 at 7:00
p.m. at St. Martha Catholic Church in Murrieta for adults and on Saturday, February 20 at 2:00 p.m. at
St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Chino Hills for children.
As a parish community, we have the opportunity to participate in the Rite of Election so that we can
witness in their intentions to join the Catholic Church. In this way, we can demonstrate our support and offer our blessings as they declare their intentions to the Bishop and to be placed on the Book of the Elect. This book reminds us all
that God calls us each by name.
