What your child is learning this half term Spring 2: Gallery Rebels Literacy Our curriculum this half term will be focusing on non-fiction texts. We will be focusing on how Art has developed throughout time, looking at: Surrealism, Impressionism and Expressionism within their reading focus. Children will be covering the following genres: explanation texts (about famous artists), narratives and poetry. At home: Take your child to the local library and encourage them th th to find information on famous 19 and 20 century artists. Children should also be revising knowledge of Grammar and Punctuation in preparation for SATs. RMSE We will be learning about the meaning of forgiveness and being merciful this half term. We will also be looking what religions say about these dispositions. Later in the term we will also be learning about the Easter festival. At home: Talk to your child about forgiveness and why it is important to forgive people. Music This half term, Year 6 will be focusing on Expressionist music and researching the composer Arnold Schoenberg. They will be describing how composers create mood and reflect on different sounds and tone to create effect. Children will compose their own piece of music in the style of the Expressionist genre. At home: Encourage your child to talk about the skills they are developing and practise regularly. Health Education This half term, we will be learning about the effects of alcohol and drugs on our bodies; children will explore legal and illegal drugs, and look at people’s attitudes towards drug taking. At home: Encourage children to reflect on how they can avoid pressures and live a healthy, happy lifestyle. Maths In preparation for SATS, children will be revising Place Value, Multiplication and Division facts, Four operations to solve word problem, Fractions, Decimals and Percentages, Angles, Metric units, Ratio and Proportion, Averages, and Multiples and Factors At home: Continue to practice mental maths skills regularly including the four operations and support children in recalling multiplication and corresponding division facts. Science Children will be developing their understanding of electrical circuits in our “Danger – Low Voltage” topic. They will be learning about the different circuit symbols, how electricity is generated and transmitted across the country as well as investigating electrical appliances and circuits. At home: Discuss with children how to stay safe around electricity and identify electrical items in the house. PE Computing This half term, 6H will be learning about Handball, whilst 6K will be taking part in Athletics activities and 6B will be focusing on Rounders. At home: Encourage children to practise the skills they have learnt in PE lessons. “We are Market Researchers” Linking to their learning of developing and creating apps, children will conduct research into the potential market for their app, using an online survey together with interviews or focus groups. They will analyse the data and information they obtain and create a presentation summarising their findings. At home: Encourage children to identify different types of Market Research they can carry out. Art/DT History/Geography In our Art and DT lessons, we will be looking at the works of 19th and 20th century artists; using their techniques to recreate their paintings, such as Paul Cezanne, Salvador Dali and Max Ernst. At home: Visit a local art museum and explore great artisitic work through the centuries, discussing different techniques that artists have used. This half term, we will be completing our new topic ‘Gallery Rebels’. We will be learning how to use maps to locate the different Art Museums around the world discovering the country and continent in which they are located and looking more in depth at the geographical features of that country. Children will also research great artists through time, such as Vincent Van Gogh. At home: Take your child to the library and allow them to find out about the different art museums around the world. Homework Maths, Literacy and Topic homework is set on a Thursday and must be returned on a Monday. Please ensure that you read with your child every day.
