Stalin was born Ioseb Dzughashvili, a complex name that was difficult to pronounce. In
an attempt to emphasize his toughness and resolve, Joseph changed his name in 1913 to
reflect his desire to be known as the “man of steel,” or “Stalin” in Russian.

Collective Farm
Kiev (vicinity), Ukraine, USSR (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics). Settin uo the
district newspaper, "Collective Farmer" in the fields of a farm, ca. 1930. Stalin’s first
five-year plan focused on rapid industrialization and immediate collectivization of all
farmland, such as the scene above. The disruption of the established farming cycles to
force this collectivization resulted in widespread man-made famines in the Ukraine in
1932-1933. Over five million people died from starvation during this time.

Siberian Prison Camp
Convict camp near Eastern Siberian Railway - building sod house, oct. 1895.
Stalin was arrested numerous times for various crimes from petty theft to strike
organizing while operating with the Marxist/Socialist Revolutionary underground in
Russia and was consequently sent to labor camps in Siberia. Later as Premier of the
USSR, Stalin would send millions to prison camps (the Gulags) in Siberia.

SUMMARY: Cartoon shows Soviet leader Joseph Stalin as a basketball player trying to block
a ball labeled "Marshall Plan" from a basket labeled "European Recovery." Probably drawn in
1947 as the Russians vainly tried to prevent the Western European nations from accepting U.S.
aid through the Marshall Plan. The Russians did prevent their own satellite countries from
participating.
