ISSUE 12 / 17
Dear St Michael’s Community,
SENIOR LEARNING CENTRE
St Michael’s College is pleased to announce that construction is now due to commence on a new Senior Leaning Centre (SLC) at the
Henley Beach Campus.
This exciting initiative has gained momentum since the 2016 announcement that South Australian Catholic schools would be moving
Year 7 to Secondary in 2019. A Year 7 move had been an ongoing focus at both St Michael’s College Board and Leadership team level
for some time, with significant planning having already been underway prior to the announcement from the South Australian
Commission for Catholic Schools.
The SLC will not only enable increased capacity at the Secondary Campus, but also provide a contemporary, state of the art learning
facility for staff and senior students and a welcoming environment for members of the wider St Michael’s College community.
The facility is modelled on a university hub design, and includes flexible leaning spaces that will cater for individual and group learning.
The stunning two-storey building includes 13 new teaching rooms, integrated technologies, a lecture theatre, hospitality space, staff
areas, Student Services and a café.
The facility is adjacent to the main oval and provides new change rooms, community area, carpark, landscaped outdoor gathering and
learning spaces, and a foyer dedicated to the history of the De La Salle Brothers.
The project will be undertaken in partnership with Edge Architects and Partek Construction and is due for completion by Term 2, 2018.
An animated flythrough of the SLC is available on the website or can be accessed here. We will keep you updated through to the
completion of this exciting project.
ANZAC DAWN SERVICES
Anzac Day goes beyond the anniversary of the landing on Gallipoli in 1915. We remember all Australians who served and died in war
and on operational service on the day. The spirit of Anzac, with its qualities of courage, sacrifice and mateship, continues to have
meaning and relevance today. St Michael’s College was once again proudly represented by staff and students in Dawn Services at
Henley Beach and Seaton Park as well as at the Australian National Memorial, in Villers-Bretonneux, France. Full article follows in this
edition of the Star.
CAICA CUP
The Caica Cup, held yesterday, is an annual event that sees St Michael’s College and Henley High School students compete in a range
of sporting activities across the day. The concept was originally devised to develop the community relationship between the two
Cudmore Terrace tenants and highlight both the personal and the sporting talents of the students. We continue to be impressed by
the outstanding spirit and sportsmanship displayed by all participants.
The Cup is named after Paul Caica, member for Colton and a long-time friend of both schools. It was a pleasure to have him on hand
again to present the Cup. Congratulations to Henley High, who took home the Cup with an overall result of 11-8. A big thankyou to
the organisers, particularly Jordan Young and Leanne Burton (SMC) and James Treagus (HHS), staff and students from both Henley
High and St Michael’s College. We look forward to the Caica Cup remaining a valued annual event and continuing to foster the already
positive relationship between the two schools and their communities. Stay tuned to next week’s edition of the Star newsletter for the
full article and photos of the event.

REST IN PEACE
Mr John Grant
Past St Michael’s College Staff Member (1965 – 1988),
Grandpa to Holly Grant 8GI, Maddison Grant 9KA, Josh Grant 9LU, Kane Grant (2012)
Euan Bardadyn (Yr 5 2013).
Father to Jamie Grant (1983), Greg Grant (1984), Amelia Grant (1985),
Damien Grant (1990), Remy Grant (2011) and Ben Davis (1995).
Eternal rest grant unto him O Lord
and let perpetual light shine upon him.
May his soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed,
through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
Amen
The College is honoured to be able to provide an extract from John Grant’s Valè from the 1988 St Michael’s College magazine.
After almost 23 years of service to the staff, students and parents of St Michael’s College, Mr John Grant resigned
as Senior Deputy Headmaster of the College at the end of Term 1 John was one of only four members of staff
who came to the College prior to the establishment of the Senior campus at Henley in 1967. He was therefore an
integral part of the development of the Senior Campus for 21 years and was appointed to the position of Deputy
Headmaster in May 1981, when Mr Michael Critchley accepted a senior position in the Catholic Education Office.
John will always be remembered for his compassionate and very sensitive approach to people. He was always
quick to identify their needs and to respond appropriately. He learned the names of every student in the school
in very quick time and had a great memory for all that transpired during the course of any year.
During his years of service, he had an extensive involvement in sport and cadets and always gave himself
unreservedly to what he saw as the essential elements of our school. His dedication and loyalty to the ideas of
St John Baptist de la Salle will always be remembered by the four headmasters whom he served during his 23
years.

DAWN SERVICE HENLEY BEACH RSL
Mateship, sacrifice and love of country were the central virtues that were a part of the Anzac
Dawn Service at Henley Beach. Thousands of local residents attended the annual event and
a highlight this year was the presentations from our College Captain Pamela Carrera and
College Leader Scott Hanel. Both students were given the opportunity to address the people
on this very important and historical day. Below are some extracts of the speeches delivered
by Pamela and Scott.
World War 1: The Western Front - Pamela Carrera
The period between 2014 and 2018 marks the centenary of a range of significant moments
in World War 1. For Australians, this began in earnest in 2015 as we commemorated the
centenary of the beach landing at Gallipoli. In 2015, Scott and I had the privilege of attending
the Villers Brettenux Dawn Service in France, which commemorated the centenary
anniversary of World War 1. This experience was truly breathtaking; the sheer impact of
attending such a service on the soil where those who served had fallen was incredible. Whilst
walking through the memorial I noticed the ages of some of the soldiers, some much to my
surprise were our age, now known as ‘forever young’. One tombstone I noticed had etched
on it “step softly a dream lies buried here”. While the last post played at the service, my heart
began to beat rapidly. I realised in that moment that it is up to us to keep sharing the brave
soldier’s stories. It is up to us to continue their legacy and strive towards a future of justice
where we break down the walls of hostility and division.
Community – Scott Hanel
Over recent years, we have had a number of classes working to further cement the bonds of
friendship and solidarity between France and Australia, bonds that were forged 100 years
ago on the battlefields of the Western Front. We were paired with Lycee Giraux Sannie as
part of an ANZAC centenary initiative, the schools Link Up Project. Giraux Sannier is in
Boulogne-sur-Mer, once the location of a World War 1 base hospital from which soldiers were
evacuated to England for treatment. We have worked with them to build our understanding
of the Western Front, while learning more about each other's countries and culture in the
present. We have particularly focused on two soldiers from Henley Beach who were wounded
in battles on the Western Front and died of their wounds in Boulogne: Sapper Ernest Wallace
and Private Philip Walter Groves.
Out College Captain, Pamela Carrera and College Leader Scott Hanel are to be commended
for their willingness to partake and deliver such an important speech on a day that truly
represents the fabric of our nation.
Mr Matthew Williams, Director of Pastoral
NAPLAN TESTING 2017
All students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 will undertake National testing in Literacy and Numeracy over a three-day period in May.
The National Assessment Program is run at the direction of the Educational Council. It includes the National Assessment Program –
Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN). The Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) is the independent
statutory authority responsible for the overall management of the Australian National Assessment Program, in collaboration with
representatives from all states and territories and non-government school sectors. The tests are administered simultaneously in all
schools across Australia. NAPLAN tests are another way of finding out what students can and cannot do so that support can be
provided. As such, it is a valuable diagnostic tool for teachers so that they can individualise students’ learning programs. At St
Michael’s, our teachers have been working with students so they are prepared for their upcoming tests. This assists in alleviating any
anxiety students may be experiencing as the test dates near so that they can perform to the best of their abilities. NAPLAN individual
student reports show the achievement of an individual student in a series of bands, against National Minimum Standards and the
ranges of achievement for the middle 60% of students in Australia. These reports are expected to be ready for distribution to
parents/caregivers during August and September. Further information for parents can be accessed from the website: www.nap.edu.au

HAIR
Hair guidelines:

Hair is to be clean, neat and tidy, out of the eyes and without extremes of colour or style.

Boys and girls hair, if it reaches below the bottom of the collar, should be tied back and free of multi-colored streaks and
large patches of any different colour.

Cuts and styles that, in the opinion of the College, are extreme, or attract attention, are not acceptable. If in doubt, students
should consult with their Year Level Director before making radical changes to hair.

Hair that is below the bottom of the collar must be tied back in a ponytail, and neatly off the face (no “top buns” are
permitted).

Hair ties must be navy blue.

Hair length must be evenly cut (i.e. no undercuts).


SECONDARY: 8150 2323
Parents are requested to contact the College via the designated absentee lines by 9:30am, if a student is going to be absent or late.
We are unable to accept absences reported by students or via EMAIL.
With consideration for student welfare, the Administration Centre contacts all parents via text message if a student is absent and there
has been no contact.
Extended Leave
Parents are requested to advise the Administration Office, in writing, of extended leave, ie: family holidays.
Secondary Students
If students are running late to their pastoral class in the morning, they MUST report to the Administration Office, with a note in their
diary. If a student has been marked absent by the Pastoral Teacher and has not signed in at the Administration Office, a text message
will be sent to the parent regarding their absence.
Secondary Students Leaving The Property During School Time
Parents and students are reminded of the procedure to follow if a student is required to leave the campus during school hours.
Parents are asked to write a note in the student’s diary. The student should have this note signed by their Year Level Director or
Assistant before proceeding to the Administration Office to sign out. If the student returns to the campus during school hours, they
are also requested to enter the property via the Administration Office to sign back in.
TRAFFIC CONCERNS
The support of all vehicle drivers is requested in regards to traffic safety around both Primary and Secondary campuses. The safety
of all is paramount and we ask that every road user (pedestrian and driver) be very conscious of placing safety ahead of all other
concerns. Council officers regularly monitor parking around both campuses so please be mindful of the parking restrictions that are
in place.
SECONDARY CAMPUS: PARKING RESTRICTIONS
There are parking restrictions on both sides of Mitton Ave between 8:00 – 9:30am and 2:30 – 4:00pm. Lawrie St has restrictions on
the southern (college) side between 8:00 – 8:30am and 2:30pm – 4:00pm. Please note that the new building project will cause traffic
disruptions in Lawrie St at certain times.
PRIMARY CAMPUS: ROAD SAFETY
Please use the pedestrian lights when crossing East Avenue. Standing or straddling in the middle of the road as cars travel past is an
unsafe practice.
DROP OFF SAFETY AREA & SURROUNDING PARKING RESTRICTIONS
Hubbard Street is a ‘Kiss n Drop/Pick Up’ area AND No Parking Zone between 8:00 – 9:30am and 2:30 – 4:00pm on school days.
You can park and wait for your son to enter the College grounds OR alternatively get out of the car to ensure your son is safe (do not
move more than 3 metres away from your vehicle). The drop off and pick up must be completed as soon as possible – in any case,
within 2 minutes.
Students waiting to be collected are to remain in the undercover walkway and refrain from playing ball games or leaving this area until
collected by their parents/caregivers. Yard Duty Supervision concludes at the drop off zone at 3:40pm and students who have not
been collected are escorted to the office to contact their parents/caregivers.
Parking is prohibited (NO STANDING) on both sides of East Avenue from just north of Hubbard Street to just south of George Street
24 hours a day.
Students who utilise the bus service do so via the East Avenue gates; they are escorted to the bus by Yard Duty Supervisors. The
students are to refrain from playing ball games while waiting for the bus.
The outer perimeter of the school and side streets are regularly monitored by City of Charles Sturt Compliance Officers, please obey
the parking signage to avoid penalties.
The Moorland Avenue gate is a “Staff Only” access point.
Please be attentive to all parking signage, including Saturday morning when attending College Sporting activities.
PRIMARY PARKING
Compliance officers will continue to monitor the outer perimeter of the school and side streets regularly. Parking infringement notices
will be issued if road users do not adhere to parking signs around the school and in particular in Hubbard Street. We also ask that
road users ensure their vehicles are not parked in or across the driveway of our school neighbours.
Please be particularly mindful that Child Safety is paramount and takes priority over the inconvenience of not having access to a park.
As the weather turns more inclement the need for greater attentiveness to safe road habits increases. Please consider timing pick up
for perhaps 5 minutes later as you will be surprised at the ease of accessibility. Conversely when weather is particularly inclement
you can, in person, collect your son from 3:10pm, this is to support those parents/caregivers who park and walk. Don’t park in the
Pick-Up Zone and leave your vehicle unattended.

and Mr Kym Clark, Director Lasallian Mission

LEGAL STUDIES EXCURSION
At the end of last term, Ms Rossi’s Year 11 Legal
Studies students visited the Magistrate and District
courts, as well as Parliament House.
In the morning, students sat in on multiple court
cases, experiencing first-hand the processes and
structures of our judicial system. To view the courts
was an amazing experience, especially after learning
about it in class and seeing how the legal concepts
are applied in real life criminal cases. This
experience was particularly interesting for those
students who aspire to become lawyers, as it
provided an accurate insight into what the
profession entails.
In the afternoon, the Hon. Paul Caica provided
students with an insightful tour through the House
of Assembly and Legislative Council, which covered
valuable information for their studies. Sitting in the
House of Assembly and listening to a current politician
was an interesting experience. The tour also allowed us to learn about some of the other people who are members of parliament, and
how bills are debated in the chamber.
Overall, being able to witness an active courtroom and touring Parliament House allowed us to develop a more in-depth understanding
of Australia’s legal system. We thank the Hon. Paul Caica for giving up his time to speak with us and answer our questions.

THE BIG DAY IN IT
The Big Day in IT is a conference designed for both high school
and University students interested in technology careers.
On 11 April, teachers from the Digital Technologies Department
accompanied 42 keen IT students to the University of Adelaide
for an opportunity to listen to keynote speakers from some of the most influential industry leaders in IT. These included Microsoft,
DXC Technology, IBM, WiseTech Global, Novus Res and TATA Consultancy Services, as well as the Australian Government ICT
Cadetship Program and the Cyber Security Division of the Department of Human Services.
Students were encouraged to consider the part they will play in the futures of technology and asked to explore and discuss the future
developments of AI, Augmented Reality, Cyber Security and Big Data. Students were challenged to become active participants in the
Fourth Industrial Revolution (the Digital Revolution), which is fast evolving and stretching boundaries. They were also encouraged to
work with their peers in their own Tech Start Up projects and were inspired by the fact that some of our most influential developments
in the history of Technology started in the garage of the family home. Who knows? Maybe someday soon, St Michael’s College will
have their very own Tech Start Up entrepreneurs. Let us encourage this generation to put their ideas to the test, and start inventing
today!

VISUAL ARTS – YEAR 10 PAINTING
Term 1 saw the Year 10 art students create Surrealist paintings on canvas. Inspired by the works of Salvadore Dali and Rene Magritte,
each work delves into the world of the subconscious, providing students with the opportunity to create unpredictable, imaginative
scenes.

NEWS FROM YEAR 9 PASTORAL CARE!
In the last week of term, a visit from Adelaide Wing Chun Academy saw Year 9 boys being instructed in this Martial Art during their
Wednesday Pastoral Care lesson in Founders Hall.
At the core of the philosophy of Wing Chun is the intent to use mindful action rather than muscle. It includes the intent to be free from
the need to impress others with physical prowess. The philosophy endeavours to help each person tap into the inner power and to
take control of and responsibility for their own life. It is designed to help us recognize how using positive energy and accomplishing
goals of a positive nature are so much more powerful than negative thought and deed.* It was encouraging to see the boys all
participate with curiosity, an open mind and zest. Well done!

YEAR 9 GIRLS RELIGIOUS EDUCATION SPIRITUAL RETREAT
STRONG WOMEN OF THE BIBLE: A DAY OF REFLECTION AND PRAYER
Last term Mrs Patrizia Puglia invited me to lead her RE class in a
day of reflection and prayer held at the Bethany Centre set in the
grounds of the historic St Joseph’s Convent, which was
established by Mary MacKillop and the early Sisters of St Joseph
in 1872.
I thoroughly enjoyed the day with the girls. What a delightful
class! They were very engaged and participated whole-heartedly
in all the activities. What great ambassadors for St Michael’s
College!
I found the girls’ responses throughout the day very inspiring. In
one of the sessions we looked at our personal relationship with
God. We had a picture of a tree that represented God. In positions
on and around the tree were various Leunig characters
representing possible relationships with God. Characters were
swinging happily from a rope attached to a branch confidently
climbing up a limb, fearfully clutching at a branch; establishing a
tree house; watching another saw off the limb on which he is sitting;
falling out of the tree; standing under the tree, gazing enquiringly.
The girls were asked to shade in four of the characters that represented their relationship with God at various times in their lives, and
to circle the one that represented them at present. Then I invited them in the large group to describe the relationship people have
with God based on the Leunig characters. The girls were so responsive! I really was amazed at their insights.
Then, in groups of four, the girls shared with each other which characters they had shaded and circled and the emotions they
experienced in doing the exercise. The girls were very engaged with each other in the sharing session, obviously well trained in
listening and sharing in trust.
The girls were then asked to share, in their small groups, a time when they experienced God’s presence in their lives. When they
assembled in the large group I said I would like four girls to share with us a significant time (or usual times) when they experienced
God. Four girls shared – touched our hearts, inspired us.
Next we shared, in the large group, questions we have about God. We’d each been told when we were young that there were wonderful,
generous, invisible personalities in our lives: Santa Claus, Easter Bunny, Tooth Fairy, God. So it is natural we have questions about
God! The girls shared their questions and all listened with great respect. One of the questions: “If God is a loving God, why do bad
things happen to good people?” is a question that is often asked. Some of the other girls had also had this thought and had found
their own answers. I told them I had found Fr Richard Leonard’s answer to this question very moving, very reassuring. His beautiful
sister, through an accident, became a quadriplegic; through his experience of grief, he came to know “that when bad things happen
to people, God cries”. God does not cause the hurt. God does not will us to suffer. No, God cries. Fr Richard’s book, “Where the Hell
is God?” is worth reading.
During the day we prayed together, experienced a meditation and looked at Mary, the model for all women: the young girl who said
“Yes” to God’s invitation to be the mother of Jesus, the woman who continued to say “Yes” to God throughout her life, the mother who
stood at the foot of the cross.
In conclusion, thank you girls for the opportunity to have an amazing day with you. As you noted I was excited to be back in the
‘teacher’ role – caused by you being such an engaged, inspiring group. I extend my thanks to: Mrs Patrizia Puglia for initiating the
day and for your wonderful organization; Sr Nithya for liaising with me and for your input on ‘Women in the Bible’; Mrs Beverley
Coleman and Miss Nadia Loprete for your presence, participation and support.
I left the venue thinking, “What a great College is St Michael’s!”

YEAR 9 PASTORAL PROGRAM
In Week 11 of Term 1, Miss Porcelli’s class engaged in a team building activity as part of their Pastoral Program. In groups, the students
were required to build the tallest structure possible using only uncooked spaghetti and marshmallows. This activity allowed students
to demonstrate a variety of character strengths discussed in the Pastoral Program throughout the term, in particular fairness,
perseverance and creativity. The activity was highly successful as the students were able to take a step back from their creations and
identify which character strengths allowed them to work positively as a group to achieve the best possible result. Well done girls!
