Torellowasbrowsing
localshelterwebsites
lookingforakittyto
love.Whilesome
sheltersseemedto
aboundwith
possibilities,theNew
HavenAnimalShelter
siteofferedonlytwo—
bothofwhomhadhad
Clarissa
troubledpasts.Twoand-a-half-yearoldgray-and-whitetabby
Cloudhadgrownupinacathoarder’s
homeandsporteda“cloudy”blueeye,
theresultofascratchedcorneagivento
himbyoneofhisunhappyhousemates.
Meanwhile,atjust6months,weecalico
Clarissastruggledwithaneurological
condition—believedtohavebeencaused
byavirusshecontractedinthewomb—
thatcausedhertolosecontrolofherback
legsandhobblewhenshemostwantedto
play.
ItwasCloud’sonlinephotothatfirst
caughtTorello’seye.“Hewasso
handsome.Ijustfellinlovewithhisface,”
shesays.Uponvisitingtheshelterand
meetinghim,thedecisiontoadoptwas
immediate.However,whilebecoming
acquaintedwithCloud,Torellonoticed
thatClarissa—housedinacratesituated
justbelowhis—insistedongreetingheras
well.“Cloudwasalittleshy.Heletmepet

him,butstayedinhiscratethewhole
time.Clarissa,though,reallyreachedout
tomeandwassuperplayful.Itdidn’t
mattertoherthatherlegsweregiving
out.Shewaslike,‘I’makitten.I’minitto
winit!’“
WhileTorellothoughtitwouldbe
wisetochoosebetweenthem,her
heartwastorn.ShedecidedonCloud,
butcouldn’tgetClarissaoffhermind.
Clarissa’s“specialneeds”statuswas
causeenoughforhesitation:Although
Torellohadbeenaroundcatsallher
life,most—especiallythosefromher
childhood—hadbeenpetswhowere
veryindependent,evenspendinga
greatdealoftimeoutdoors.Would
shebetherightpetparentforalittle
onewhomightbetotallyreliantupon
her?Shereturnedtotheshelterfora
secondlook—andfellinlovewith
Clarissaalloveragain.
“IdecidedIjustcouldn’t
leaveherbehind,”she
says.
Bothcatsneededtime
toacceptTorello—and
eachother.Cloudspent
hisfirstdaysinhisnew
homeunderthebed,
barelyeating.“Then,one
night,Iwaslyinginbed—
itwasabout1:30inthe
morning—andallofa
sudden,Iheardanoise:
Hewasplayingwithone
ofhistoys,”Torellosays.
Cloud
“Ilookedoverthesideof
thebed,andhewasproppedagainstit,
peekingatme.”Afterthat,Cloudwasking
ofhiscastle,tothepointwherehisnew
momworriedatfirstabouthissometimes
roughplaywithlittlesisterClarissa.
However,asClarissa’slegshave
strengthened—shecannowleapfromthe
topofTorello’sdressertoherbed—sohas
herconfidence.“She’llnowinstigate
playtimeandchasehimoutoftheroom,”
Torellosays.“Sometimes,she’llbeonmy
bedandhe’llcomeintheroom—and
she’llstompwithherfrontlegstotease
andscarehim.It’samazinghowthey’ve
growntogether.”
Ineveryotherway,eachhas
blossomed.Torello—wholovestoindulge
themwithtreatsandregulargrooming,
andleavesnaturechannelsplayingfor
themonTVeverydaywhenshe’sat
work—notesthattheyhavedifferentplay
preferences.Cloudlovesballsthatjingle
andtoysonastick,aswellashisartist
mom’spaintbrushes,whichhe’llsteal
wheneverpossible.“Wehavethislittle
game,whereI’llsaytohim,‘I’mpainting
you,’andpretendtostrokepaintoverhis
fur,”shesays.“He’llsittherewhile
I’mdoingthatandthengrabthe
brushfrommyhand.”Hehasno
interestwhatsoeverinchasinga
laserlight—oneofClarissa’s
passions—orplayingwithanyofthe
littlepom-pomsTorelloboughtfor
heratWalmart.However,theydo
sharethesameloveofwatching
birdsouttheirapartmentwindows.
“Ihaveabiggersmileonmyface
thaneverthesedays,becauseof
them,”Torellosays.“Theywakeme
inthemornings,greetmeatthe
doorwhenIcomehome,andbring
mesomuchaffectionafteratough
dayatwork.Itjustamazesme,given
thetoughbackgroundstheycamefrom.
It’smademerealizetheimportanceof
adoptingpetsfromshelters.They’regoing
toappreciatetheloveyougivethemso
muchmore.”

BigBleu:LivingtheGoodLife
HowwouldyoudescribeadogwhowearsanOaklandRaiders’
hatinNewEnglandPatriots’countryanddoesn’tcarewhoseesit?
Self-assured?Defiant?Orjustplainblasé?Accordingtohisowner
MichaelBrousseau,youshouldcallBleuthelatter.Hefeelsnoguilt,
noremorse,andhasnaryathoughtabouttheRaiders’impending
movetoLasVegas.Bleu’sbiggestconcerniswhenwillMichaelbe
cominghome,howsoondoIeat,andwhich
moviearewewatchingtonight?Bleu’smovie
preference?None;hejustloveshunkeringdown
withhisbestbuddy.
“Itdoesn’tmatterifI’mgoneforfiveminutes
orthewholeday,”saysMichael.“Hereactsthe
sameway,alwayshappytoseeme.”
BleuisanAmericanStaffordshireTerrier
(popularlyknownas‘pitbull’),grey-blueand
whitewithahugeheadandafacethatwearsa
perpetualsmile.Ourphotoofhimonthe
Petfinderwebsiteinitiallycaughttheattention
ofMichael’sgirlfriend,Ashley.Evenbefore
comingtothesheltertomeetBleu,Michael
decided,“That’smydog.”Itonlytookonelook.
Theshelter’schiefanimalcontrolofficer,Joe
Manganiello,supervisedtheadoptionsinceBleu
wasapowerful,70-pounddog,andneededsomeonewhocould
physicallyhandlehissize.ForMichael,thatwasnotaproblem.
Initially,Bleuwastimid—butbeforelong,Michaelwasabletowin
hisconfidenceandtrust.Nostrangertothenurturingprocess,
Michaelhadpreviouslyadoptedapitbullfromafriend.Hefound
himselfunpreparedforthedauntingresponsibilityaheadofhim;the
dogturnedouttobe3weeksoldandneededtobebottlefedevery
fourhours.Itwasachallengefromwhichhedidnotbackaway.His
dedicationpaidoff—thetinypuplivedtobe10yearsold.Asa
result,Michaelsays,hefellinlovewiththebreed,andwas
determinedtofindapittiesuccessor.
“Iwantedtoprovetopeoplethatthecommonperceptionofpit
bullsiswrong,”hesays.“Theyarealoving,loyaldogthatneedsa
chance.”
MichaelsaysthatwhenheiswalkingwithBleu,peopleseemabit
intimidated:“Ifonlytheyknewwhata‘goofball’heis.”
Althoughhisinteractionswithotherdogsarelimited,Bleu
hasmadesomefriends.OneofthemisMonty,athreeyear-oldpug.Monty,all15poundsofhim,hastriedto
asserthisdominanceoverBleu,onlyinspiringthelarger
dogtoretreattoasoftcouchforanap.Montyhas
becomeresignedtothisstateofaffairs,andtheyremain
steadfastpals.
ThereweresomeadjustmentstomakewhenBleu
arrivedattheBrousseauhousehold.Returningfromwork
onday,Michaelcameupthestairsandsawthathiscouch
hadbeenpulledacrosstheroom,blockinghisway.And
theresatBleu,wholookedatMichaelasiftosay,“Couch?
Whatcouch?Ididn’tmoveanycouch.”Thereinbegan
somelayingofgroundrules:First;norelocatingfurniture.
Second;nochewingthedomesticscenery.Hehas
respondedobediently.Nowhiseffortsfocusonoffering
hisbiggreypawuponrequestandrollingoverforacovetedbelly
rub.
So,lifeforBleuisidyllicasitshouldbeforallcreatures.Hisneeds
arefewbut,Michaelsays,hegivesbacksomuch.Theirdayusually
endswiththemsittingonthecouchwitharoundortwoofvideo
games,Bleuobservingthecolorfulgraphicsandsilentlycheeringon
hisfriend.He’sneverreadytoleavehisfavoriteperchandwhenhe
does,heslidessmoothlyoff,withhislegsstillonthecouchbehind
him.
OurVolunteers–APassionforAnimals
TheFriendshavehadabusyfewmonthssincethelastnewsletterwaspublished.Asalways,wehavekeptupwithourmonthlyadoptioneventswithNorth
ShoreAnimalLeagueAmerica.WealsowenttoNorthHavenPetcoandHamdenPetcoforourusualmonthlyminiadoptionevents,whereeachvolunteer
transportsananimal.Thedogsandcatsenjoyadayawayfromtheshelter,andwealwayshaveagoodtimespreadingthewordaboutouradoptableanimals
andourorganization.Inaddition,weparticipatedinSantapictureswithboththeHamdenandNorthHavenPetcoaspartoftheAllForHolidayHomes
fundraisingcampaign.SantaLeo(along-timevolunteerwithourorganization)alwaystakesgreatpictureswiththeanimals,andthisyear,wewerelucky
enoughtohavedogs,cats,ferrets,rabbitsandevenageckovisitus!SomeofoursheltergraduatescometotakepictureswithSantaeveryyear,andit’salways
wonderfultoseehowwelltheyaredoingintheirforeverhomes.
WeareveryluckytohavethesupportoflocalbusinessesintheGreaterNewHavenArea.ThreeSheetsNewHaven,MiKroBeerBar,TheHopsCompanyand
ElmCitySocialgenerouslyheldfundraisersforus,whichhelpedraisemuchneededmoneyforourmedicalfundaswellasourshelterrenovationfund.
Speakingofourshelterrenovation,itisfinallyunderway.Wewaiteduntilbetterweatherbeforebreakinggroundonournewstaffoffice,butwehavealready
installedsoundpanelsintheadoptabledoghallwayandareveryexcitedtoseethefinishedproduct,whichwillbeineitherMayorJune.
Sometimesoon,wewillbehavingourvolunteergeneralorientationmeeting–wecouldalwaysusemorededicatedvolunteerstohelpenhancethelivesof
theanimalsatourshelter!Iftheypassdogorcathandlingtraining,volunteersareallowedtoworkhandsonwiththeadoptableanimals.Inaddition,
volunteersareneededtohelpoutatadoptionevents,organizeandattendfundraisers,helpwithoursocialmediaaccounts,andaidinmanyothertasks,which
helpkeepourorganizationrunning.
Allvolunteersmustbeover18yearsofageandbewillingtomakeaminimumofa6-monthcommitmentof8hoursamonth.Onceavolunteerpasses
training,heorsheisallowedtocomeandvolunteerattheshelterwhenevertheshelterisopentothepublic–ourhoursareMondaythroughSaturdayfrom
12:30-4:30.

HelpingOurAnimals–DonationsAtWork
Ifouranimalscouldtalk,thefirstthingtheywouldsayis“thankyou!”
Onceagain,yourgenerosityhassavedmanylives.Withoutyoursupport,wecouldneverprovidemedicalcarethatissobadlyneeded.
Fromtriage,todiagnostictests,bloodwork,andultimately,thelongroadofhealing,youhaveplayedanintegralrole.
Toincludeallthemedicalcaseswouldbeoverwhelming,sowewillhighlightafew.Somemonthsago,apuppyarrivedatourshelterwitha
brokenlegthatrequiredorthopedicsurgery.Hertinylegwassupportedbyacastwhichlimitedactivityforthissweetdog.OfficerJoe
Manganielloandhiswife,Lori,havebeenfostering(astheyalwaysdo)andnowJaimieismedicallyclearedandisattheshelterawaitinga
foreverhome.
TwoolderfemaleAmericanStaffordshireTerrierseachrequiredsurgeryfordifferentreasons.Eachwasafraid,anxious,andsadasthey
seemedtosay,“WillIeverleavehere?”Sometimes,agecombinedwithmedicalissuescanbeadetrimentbut,notinthesecases.Weare
happytoreportthateachdoghasbeenadoptedintoaloving,permanenthome.
WealsotookinauniquelycoloredRottweiler,creamandtanwithabeautifullyexpressiveface.Sheheldupaninjuredpawthatwas
evidentlycausingherpain.Radiographsrevealedthattherewasasmallbreak.Thankfully,nosurgeryorcastwasrequired,onlyabitofpain
medication.Ourveterinarianorderednorunningorjumping—adauntingexpectationforsuchanexuberantyounglady.
Ourcatshavereceivedconsistenttreatmentfromthestaffforparasitesandwearehappytosay,90percentofthemareadopted.Betty,
anolder,attractive,femalefelinewasevaluatedforkidneydiseaseandiscurrentlydoingwellandhasrecentlybeenadopted.Twotiny
kittenscameinseparatelyandwereimmediatelysentouttobefosteredbyAllysonEliason,ourkittenfoster.
Theelderlydogsandcatscontinuetohavebloodworktoensurethattheyarehealthypriortoadoption.Inafewsadcases,whenan
animal’smedicalprognosisispoor,ourvolunteersstepintoassureadignified,painless,endoflifeexperience.
Often,ourshelteranimalshavebadlyinfectedteeththatrequireextraction.Leftuntreated,toothdecay,aswithhumans,cancause
seriousinfectionthatcanwreakhavoconthebody.Eachmonthwehaveatleastone,possiblytwowhourgentlyneeddentalcarebefore
leavingforanewhome.
Theanimals,thevolunteers,andthestaffvalueyourgenerousandcontinuedsupportthroughouttheyear.Formanyoftheanimals,their
qualityoflifeandoverallhealthimproves.Yourawarenessofthisforgottengroupisappreciated.

Whenyouenteredher
apartmenttherewerecat
picturesonthewallsandcat
toysalloverthefloor.Herowntwocats,DollyandCalliope,were
adoptedfromtheNewHavenAnimalShelter,andsheknewthatis
whereshewantedtovolunteer.Duringhervisits,herbigsmile
reflectedthejoyshegainedfromcomfortingthecats.Eventually,
Maryofferedtofostertwo2-week-oldkittens,LucyandDesi,inher
home.Shewasthrilledbytheopportunitytofeedandcarefor
babieswhowereinpoorhealthandtooyoungtosurvive
independently.
Shewasanoutstandingreporteronthekittens,medicallyand
developmentally.Shenotedwhentheyopenedtheireyes,how
theirlittlepersonalitiesweredevelopingandwhattheirfavorite
activitieswere.Thoughtheyhadcometoherunderweight,hesitant
toeatandfulloffleas,LucyandDesiflourishedunderhercare,
attentionandlove.Thoughtheybecameincreasinglyself-sufficient,
theynevergaveupwantingtobeheldbyherorlookingrightinher
eyeswhenshespoketothem.Thekittensalsomadeasignificant
differenceinMary’slife--shebeamedwhenshetalkedaboutthem,
heldthemandevenwhenshehadtogivethemfleabaths.
Marymaintainedherenthusiasmforfosteringandcontinuedin
thatroleforalongtime.Sheoncesaidthatherrelationshipwithher
catsgavepurposetoherlife.Attheendofherlife,asshespent
moretimeinthehospital,shemadeafellowFNHASvolunteer
promisetobringCalliopeandDollybacktotheshelterifanything
happenedtoher.Shetrustedthestafftogivethemthecarethey
neededandtofindthemgoodhomes.Marypassedawayon
December26,2016.DollyandCalliopehavesincefoundhappiness
innewforeverhomes.They—aswellasMary’sfosterkittensand
therestofus--werefortunatetohaveknownthisveryspecialcat
lady.
