SPACE – HOME LEARNING
Please choose some of these. You only need to choose two between now and the end of term. You can present them in any way you would like, such as using ICT / Art / a
presentation to the class / a photo. We’ll add them to our Space Display.
Research a planet in our solar system
What is it made of? Does it have any water on it?
Describe the planet, such as moons / rings. How far
away is it from the sun? When was it first seen from a
telescope? Has anyone landed on it – or have any
probes landed on it?
You can present it in any way you’d like, such as art /
ICT / fact file / fictional diary entry of an astronaut.
Naming our planets
Where do the names of our planets come from? Your
challenge is to find the names of the planets in our
solar system, and then explain who they are named
after.
Challenge: can you find out who named them / first
saw them?
First step on the moon
Describe the moment the first man ever stepped foot
on the moon. Who was there? What was the gravity
like? Who spoke and what famous words were said?
Who was the first man on the moon? Was anything
brought back to Earth from this voyage?
You can present this in any way you’d like.
**Please don’t copy directly from books or the
Internet. Please put it into your own words.
First steps into Space
Describe to your classmates the first missions to
Space. Which countries were involved? Were all the
voyages to Space manned? Was a human the first
living creature to go into Space? When did these
events take place? Tell us about the history of space
travel. You could even include man’s race to space –
who could be first?
Astronauts
Find out what is involved in being an astronaut. What
training do they do? What do they wear? What food do
they eat in space? Where do they go? How long do
they stay in space? Do they go to other planets, or is
there another purpose for them going into space?
Would you like to be an astronaut? You could even
think about famous astronauts, such as Yuri Gagarin.
History of Space Research
Which famous people are known for their
astronomical research? Find out about one person
and be ready to share these findings with the class.
How about Galileo, Norman Lockyer, Copernicus,
Hubble, Ptolemy, Einstein, Halley, Stephen
Hawking......Choose anybody that interests you.
You can present your findings in any way you like.
Satellites
What is a satellite? Find out about manmade ones and
moons etc. What was the first satellite in space and
what was its purpose? What are satellites used for
now? What happens when they break or are no longer
needed? How many satellites are in space? Can you
get a picture of the satellites surrounding our planet?
The Constellations
A constellation is a set of stars. Please find out about
one constellation / some constellations and draw
them. You could even try to photograph them at night.
What can you tell us about these constellations?
Imaginary Planet
Describe an imaginary planet, from another solar
system. What does it look like? Who lives there? Don’t
forget plants / animals. You could even think about
the way the planet runs, such as transport / education
/ money...
