Course Name: English Creative Writing
Instructor: Cheyenne Falls
TA:金沅佳
email: [email protected]
Course Description: I am offering an English Creative Writing extracurricular class this
term so that students can put the English they have learned in other classes to more
creative use. Creative writing opens doors for people like no other English class can. With
creative writing, young writers can embark on new adventures, travel to foreign lands, and
fall into the most dizzying loves without leaving the couch. This class is sure to be a
breath of fresh air to other English classes students have taken in the past. We will write
fiction and nonfiction and discuss the complications between the two. We will explore
these through different forms of poetry as well as short story that students will be
introduced to using a hands on approach to making each form their own.
About the Teacher: I am Ms. Cheyenne Falls, and I grew up in a small town in southwestern Virginia in the United States.
I studied at the University of Mary Washington in Virginia and received my undergraduate degree in 2015 with a major in
English and a minor in Linguistics. I continued my studies at UMW and received a master’s degree in Education. I have a
strong interest in creative writing and the power that comes from something as simple as a pen. As an educator, I like to
remind my students that they are in control of their own education. With that in mind, I like to practice a student led
classroom management technique that asks students to continue to be interactive and productive throughout each lesson.
Course Name: Card Games
Instructor: Douglas Marks
TA:樊凡
email:[email protected]
Course Description: In this course, we will play card games in every class, covering
Egyptian War, spades, crazy 8s and so on.
About the Teacher: My name is Douglas Marks and I come from Oklahoma City,
Oklahoma, USA. For anybody who does not know where that is, but who is familiar
with NBA basketball, it can sometimes be more easily identified as the place where
Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook, and the rest of the Oklahoma City Thunder play.
Sports diplomacy is a great interest of mine, and in addition to watching many sports, I
also play competitive table tennis. I came to China in part because of my love for table
tennis, but also because my academic interests are in linguistics and education. I am so
excited to be a part of this university, and I look forward to teaching so many great students.
Course Name: How to Make English Conversation in Business & Trade Networks
Instructor: Eddy Hrdlicka
TA:苏青
email:[email protected]
Course Description: "How to Make English Conversation in Business & Trade
Networks" is designed to help students use English in English-speaking business
and trade networks. Similar to China's "guanxi" ( 关 系 ) business relationship
systems, English-speaking business and trade network groups, often called
"networking groups", exist to create trust, friendships, mutual benefits, and
genuine concern for each others' business interests. These concepts help
members actively promote business or trade opportunities with each other.
For the purposes of this course, we will form a networking group from the class members. We will spend time in
English-only conversation learning more about each other and the careers we are pursuing. Each week, we will focus
on new exercises in which we will practice growing our relationships using the English language. At the end of the
course, you will be confident to talk to an English speaking person about 1) who you are, 2) where you are from, and 3)
what your career is going to be. You will also be confident in making business and trade network connections in any
networking group environment for any reason.
About the Teacher: Eddy Hrdlicka, M.B.A. is an independent business contractor from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma,
U.S.A. For the past five years, he has provided English speaking and writing mentorship to Chinese students in the
United States. He has served as a sports play-by-play broadcaster for Oklahoma City University's soccer, baseball,
and softball teams. He holds a real estate license for commercial real estate brokerage services in the state of
Oklahoma, through which he was a past member of "The Flint Group" networking group in downtown Oklahoma
City. Prior to his independent contractor career, he spent nine years with Cox Communications, earning several
company awards for process innovations.
His highest degree earned is a Master of Business Administration from the University of Oklahoma in December
2011. He earned several awards in student broadcasting competitions in the 1990's while attending the University of
Central Oklahoma for his bachelor degrees in Business Management and General Studies - Minor in Oral
Communications (Broadcasting).

Course Name: World Music
Instructor: Jordon Shinn
TA:金沅佳
email: [email protected]
Course Description: The term 'World Music' refers to a music genre that encompasses
a vast range of music from many cultures around the globe. World Music generally
refers to any form of traditional music outside the scope of Western popular culture,
though not free from Western influence. Many types of World Music cling to traditional
instruments and rhythms, while other types 'fuse' their musical traditions with western
instruments and styles.
In this course, we will explore other cultures through their traditional, indigenous and folk music. Not all songs will
have English and not all songs will have words. We will learn about influential musicians, traditional/folk instruments
and a few main musical styles from Latin America, North America, Africa, Eastern Europe, India, the Middle East, etc.
In class we will work in groups to discuss, appreciate, analyze and sing songs, while learning key music vocabulary.
One of my big goals of this course is to broaden the students' musical horizons. I want them to hear sounds that are
strange and unfamiliar. Therefore, we will not listen to European classical music, rock music, pop music, etc. Likewise,
we will not focus on music from East Asia, where China has a strong influence.
By the end of the course, students should have a deeper appreciation for the sounds, traditions and history of a variety
of 'World Music.' They should able to identify similarities among the musical sounds, instrumentation and traditions of
different cultures. Most importantly, they should be able to describe a variety of musical forms and express their
opinions clearly.
About the Teacher: Instructor Jordon Shinn(申老师)is from the south-central state of Oklahoma, USA. In class, his
students affectionately call him 'Captain.' He has lived in China since 2011 and recently earned his master's degree in
teaching Chinese as a foreign language from Communication University of China.
Captain has a deep love for music. He has studied the violin, trumpet and hand percussion since childhood, and also
loves to sing and whistle. He believes music is the ultimate conduit of culture and an indispensable tool for language
acquisition. A student can learn infinitely more about a culture from singing its songs than from studying a textbook.
Course Name: Active English

feet as well as their mouths when learning English. We will use a variety of activies, such as
drawing, simple science experiments, and games, to practice English in a highly engaged

and the physical action of pronunciation.
About the Teacher: My name is Megan Reczek, and I have a Master's of Arts in International Studies and a
certification in Teaching English as a Foreign Language. My areas of focus were languages, literature, and history. I
also study etymology, which is the history of words. In 2009, I taught Oral English at Yongzhou No. 4 Middle School
in Hunan province. My hobbies include reading, writing, storytelling, playing piano, drawing, and learning about new

Course Name: Your Best Self
Instructor: Melati Woods
TA:包慧琦
email: [email protected]
Course Description: Students in this class will be exposed to various philosophies,
trends and practices common through the Western world for achieving and
maintaining one’s ‘best self’. The aim is to develop students’ English through
practical activities and tasks that can be used practically to foster an improved
work-life balance, and assist in dealing with study stress. A focus will be on spoken
and listening English, as students will be encouraged to express themselves and share
opinions with each other.
About the Teacher: I’m originally from Melbourne, Australia. I graduated from Monash University in 2014 with a
Bachelor of Global Arts, a major in International Studies and a double minor in Indonesian and Spanish languages. I
definitely understand the pain and passion involved in language learning! After graduating I completed the Cambridge
Certificate of English Language Teaching and tutored English at Artha Wacana University and Satya Wacana
Universities in Indonesia.
My interest in China began when I undertook a semester exchange in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and was exposed to the
Chinese diaspora living there. In particular, I focused on multiculturalism in Malaysia with a thesis centred on
analysing Chinese economic hegemony in the country. I finally travelled to China on holiday in 2015, and decided not
to leave! In my spare time I love playing sport, swimming and of course, learning Mandarin.
