Welcoming Statement
St. Andrew is a faith community
baptized into one body, which honors and
celebrates diversity. We welcome and
include persons of every color, language,
ethnicity, origin, ability, sexual orientation,
gender expression, marital status,
and life situation.
Parish Mission
St. Andrew Parish recognizes that, as Jesus Christ
was sent by God to “bring the good news to the poor,
to proclaim liberty to captives, and to the blind new
sight, to set the downtrodden free, to proclaim the
Lord’s year of favor,” (Luke 4:18)
....so it is the mission of St. Andrew Parish to be a
visible presence of Christ in our culturally and racially
diverse neighborhood, rooted in the Gospel and nurtured by liturgy, prayer, and the community of faith.
As such we commit ourselves to work with the poor,
the powerless, and the oppressed for the liberation of
all; to seek justice, compassion, and peace in our lives,
community, and world; and to proclaim and celebrate
God’s unconditional love for all.

Promoting Success Luncheon at Nativity School
Today’s Liturgy
By Deacon Owen Cummings
If the first reading today, from
Acts 8 telling us of the missionary activity of Philip, Peter and
John, provides us with a paradigm of the Church in action/
mission, the gospel reading from
John gives us a paradigm of the
Church's identity, the foundation
of its mission. Quite simply, the
gospel text today reminds us, in
words of Origen of Alexandria,
that the Church is "full of the
Trinity." The Lord Jesus is going
away, but he tells his disciples
that another Paraclete/Advocate,
the Holy Spirit will be given. In
verse 6 of this chapter, Jesus
proclaimed, "I am the truth."
The Paraclete who is to be "with
(us) always" is described as "the
Spirit of truth." He brings about
the presence of Jesus in us, a
presence not only "with (us)",
but "within (us)." What does the
Lord mean by the words "I will
come back to you"? It certainly
means that he will come back in
Resurrection, but surely it also
means that he will return in the
Parousia. From Resurrection to
Parousia he will be presenced
among us through Baptism and
Eucharist, making us in Pope
John Paul II's words Ecclesia de
Eucharistia, "the Church made
by the Eucharist." As a result, we
will know that, in Jesus' words, "I
am in the Father, and you in me,
and I in you." If he is in us, and
we are in him, and he is in the
Father, then we too are in the
Father. The Church, full of the
Trinity, is impelled by that indwelling Trinity to bring others to
Trinitarian awareness and living.
The Trinity invites and enables
the Church in action/mission.

It’s Nice to Know
In 1964 the original production of Fiddler on the Roof
opened on Broadway. This delightful musical ran for
over 3,000 performances. One of the popular songs
dealt with the father of the Jewish family, Tevye, asking
his wife Golde whether she loved him. Golde found
it a foolish question, for had she not been his wife for
twenty-five years, washed his clothes, fed him and
their daughters day after day? But Tevye persisted
again and again until Golde said, “I suppose I do.” To which Tevye responded, “It’s nice to know.”
It is nice to know that we are loved. It’s nice to hear the words, “I love
you.” True, doing good to others and serving their needs is a witness of love,
but the words confirm the unspoken. Unfortunately, millions of people go
through life without hearing those glorious words.
“If you love me,” Jesus says, “you will keep my commandments.” And the
two great commandments? To love God and neighbor. It is through the gift
of the Holy Spirit that we are empowered to move beyond our narcissistic,
narrow lives and to be for others. In the laying on of hands at Confirmation,
the Spirit came upon us to do the loving deed and to speak the loving works:
“I love you.” Now, isn’t that nice to know?
Certain silences are oppressive,” Pope Francis writes in his post-synodal
apostolic exhortation, Amoris Laetitia (The Joy of Love). And, “The right
words, spoken at the right time, daily protect and nurture love.” Pope Francis is our fiddler on the roof, singing the song of love and joy.
