ROOT) BRANCH Hennie has been with KDL for 18 years. She was a page at her local public library in London, Ontario while in high school. Before joining the KDL family, she worked various part-time jobs at Pooh's Corner and Hekman Library. 1. If you could live anywhere, where would it be? I would love to live in New York City or Paris or Amsterdam or Bruges for a year. My family laughs at my enthusiasm to move to any place I visit. 2. What is your local eatery or hang-out? Cottage Bar. My husband and I went there for our first date and we continue to go back a few times a year. 3. What is your proudest accomplishment? I’m proud of my three kids! Career-wise, I’m proud of my efforts on the Summer Reading team. We put out a great Summer Reading program every year. 4.If money wasn't an object, what would you do? Travel. 5. If you have a pet, what kind and what is her/his name? We have a dog named Winnie. When we got her just over a year ago as a puppy, we thought we had made a huge mistake. Our kids had been begging for a dog for years. It was like having another baby! But she has proven to be a great addition to the family. She gives us a lot of love. 6.What motivates you to work hard? I really love my job! I know it is a gift to enjoy going to work each day. It is very rewarding to be a youth librarian. I have a passion for libraries and it is a privilege to be an ambassador out in the Kentwood community. 8. Have you ever had a nickname? What is it? My real name is Henrietta. I’ve always gone by Hennie, Miss Hennie to my little friends in storytime. Many of my friends and family call me Hen. 9. What is your favorite game or sport to watch and play? I am a huge Detroit Tigers fan. My family tries to see them in a different ballpark every summer. So far we have seen them in Toronto, Cleveland, Kansas City, Chicago, and, of course, Detroit. 10. What is your favorite zoo animal? Howler Monkey. Who doesn’t love the Howler Monkey? 7. What makes you laugh the most? My kids make me laugh every day. My coworkers, Greg Lewis and Kaci Shwenk, also bring me to tears (mostly from laughing!) on a regular basis. KDL Kaleidoscope | 3 SUMMER READING – MORE THAN FUN & PRIZES... The goal of summer reading is to read more than 400 minutes and we encourage kids to keep going past this goal when they earn their prize. We are grateful to be a part of your kid’s success and summer fun! >>> Why 400 Minutes? A report from the US Dept. of Education on the America Reads Challenge indicates a positive difference when a child reads for 20 minutes, five days a week versus only reading four minutes a day. The student who reads for 20 minutes a day, five days a week gets the equivalent of 60 days of school while the student that reads only four minutes a day gets the equivalent of 12 days of school. This large gap puts the child with a lower amount of reading at a disadvantage. For the student that reads 20 minutes a day, this equals 400 minutes a month. The more kids read, the better readers and writers they will be and the more knowledge and vocabulary they will gain. >>> Summer Learning Loss When kids take a break from school, with no additional educational activities, they can lose some of the learning from the prior school year. This results in schools spending time each fall working hard to get students back to where they were at the end of the previous school year. To help kids succeed in school, the library works to keep them reading throughout the summer. >>> Some Tips A CHALLENGING BOOK: If the child in your care is finding a book challenging, offer to read it aloud together. You can also switch readers each page or each chapter. LET THEM READ WHAT THEY WANT: Kids have their own interests and it’s a great development goal to have them make some of their own choices. Having them select what to read will increase their interest in reading. AUDIO IS AN OPTION, TOO: This format is great for reluctant readers, for kids with learning disabilities and for long road trips. Audiobooks also count for summer reading goals! ASK A LIBRARIAN FOR RECOMMENDATIONS / ADVICE: Our librarians are asked often to recommend great books to read at a variety of age levels, as well as for advice on getting reluctant readers reading. They read a lot of great books! 4 | Summer 2017 | www.kdl.org PRE-SCHOOL & KINDERGARTEN 1ST & 2ND GRADE Check out more recommended reading for kids at www.kdl.org /recommendations KDL Kaleidoscope | 5 YOUTH PROGRAMS: FOR ALL AGES Your favorite summer programs are back. But sometimes, magician extraordinaire Tom Plunkard is still hurting inside when he takes to the stage to perform for his beloved KDL audiences. That’s because the memory of his son’s death has not yet dimmed. The tragic loss took place nearly six years ago when Joshua, then 19, died from head injuries sustained in a longboarding accident. He was attending Wayne State University and studying film at the time of his death. “Sometimes I’m performing with an absolute broken heart,” says Plunkard, “but I felt that I needed to because I just love entertaining kids and hearing them laugh.” And Plunkard’s been doing just that – for the better part of 15 years – entertaining throngs who gather at KDL branches and go breathless in watching him make things appear, disappear and reappear. “He’s a big favorite with our patrons,” says Carlita Gonzalez, KDL Program Specialist. “It just wouldn’t be summertime without performances by Tom Plunkard.” A native of Detroit, Plunkard was first mesmerized by a magician when he was in third grade. His next move? The local library. “Until then, I would visit the library, but never knew what to read. I’d be told to pick out a book that interested me, but I could never decide on anything. Until I saw that magician. Before you know it, I’m checking out every book there is on magic, and checking them out time and time again.” His first trick – known as the “French drop” – was to make a coin disappear and then pull the coin from a subject’s ear. He initially learned it from his father, “who would do the lamest trick, but it did fool me in the beginning.” After graduating from St. Clair High School, Tom took some college classes but never finished, instead taking on jobs that ranged from driving truck to working alongside his meat-cutter father as a meat wrapper at an area A&P grocery store. Along the way, he perfected his craft, and began to do shows, starting out with small family get-togethers and gradually booking more sophisticated gigs. In his 30-plus years as a professional magician, he’s entertained at private parties for VIPs who include the Detroit Red Wings hockey team and Pistons basketball squad along with their guests. KDL Kaleidoscope | 9 But he counts KDL among his favorite venues, calling its patrons “fantastic” and its employees “some of the most wonderful and kind and caring people I’ve ever met." “I’m in awe of KDL because it’s one of the best-run library systems in the state, and they love and honor me so much and stick with me year after year.” Though Tom and his wife of 33 years, Deb, recently moved to Florida, Tom says he has no plans to abandon KDL because of a few more miles to travel. “They’re never going to lose me,” he says of loyal KDL patrons who keep coming back for more. “To get hired and then re-hired time and again is so special, and makes me feel honored.” JOIN US! Nelson Twp.: Tuesdat, June 27, 10:30 am “Everybody has some pain in their lives. We just need to find a way to dust ourselves off and move forward.” For Tom Plunkard, that means taking to the stage even when it hurts. “There’s nothing better,” he says, “than bringing joy to others.” Tyrone Twp.: Tuesday, June 13, 6:30 pm Plainfield Twp.: Thursday, June 15, 6:30 pm Spencer Twp.: Thursday, August 10, 6:30 pm Walker: Wednesday, August 2, 1:00 pm Wyoming: Tuesday, June 27, 6:30 pm YOUTH PROGRAMS: EVENING HOURS End your busy work day with an exciting evening event at select locations. Cat Knit by Jacob Grant "This is an adorable picture book that wonderfully captures the cat’s reaction to a new play mate, Yarn, as well as what happens after Yarn goes missing but is returned in a different form." - Beth | Gaines Township Branch 2. Black Water Lilies by Michel Bussi "This intriguing novel starts out with a narrator telling you that it is the story of three women, of murder and mystery, and proceeds to twine the stories in incredible ways, all in Monet’s village of Giverny. I loved the settings, characters, descriptions of the art, the flowers AND the twisty, twining stories of the three women. Most excellent reading!" -Suzanne | Cascade Township Branch 3. Goodnight Gorilla by Peggy Rathmann “My daughter and her monkey pal love this book. However, they were very perplexed as to why we were reading Goodnight Gorilla in the middle of the day and not at bedtime!" - Carlita | Service Center 14 | Summer 2017 | www.kdl.org 3 7 4. Trucker Ghost Stories by Annie Wilder "If you love ghost stories and truckers then this is a match made in 18-wheeler heaven!" - Hannah | Spencer Township Branch 5. Dead Man Walking by Jesse Ray and the Carolina Catfish "This Grand Rapids rockabilly duo has been one of my favorite acts to watch over the past few years. Their live shows are wildly entertaining – with lead singer and guitarist Jesse Ray often jumping onto tables in the crowd during performances, coupled with drummer Dingo Hopp furiously hammering away on his drum kit – and this 11-track album of blues-driven garage rock captures that energy and passion perfectly." - David | Service Center 6. The Slowest Book Ever by April Pulley Sayre "This book may be titled The Slowest Book Ever, but I was able to read it in what seemed like no time at all. After reading it I can now reiterate random facts about all things s-l-o-w, but in a timely manner of course." Each week the mom sat next to the handler with the dog and the little boy sat next to mom. It was such a wonderful end to the program that summer because for the last two weeks he sat next to the dog and read directly to him." Miss Barb, Youth Librarian, Byron Twp. Branch “Last summer I had a mother tell me that her daughter was having trouble reading and would not read out loud for anyone in the family. The dogs really helped her with her reading and gave her confidence about reading out loud. By the end of the 6 week program, she was reading aloud at home” - Tisha, Youth Librarian, Gaines Twp.
